Title: rws 34p stock filling
Post by: jccams on February 08, 2019, 08:26:27 PM
Read a bunch of different ideas for filling the stock on this rifle to reduce the vibration.  I like the idea of the plastic shopping bags as I have a bunch and they shouldn't add much weight and can be removed if wanted.  Looking for experience going this route or reasons why another route is better.

What?  How do you plan to fill your rifle with plastic grocery sacks?

By removing the butt plate and packing them in the stock.  This isn't a new idea, it has been mentioned on this forum.

I stuffed mine with rugs.

PA pellet foam cut to fit, old rags or tshirts, ziploc bag full of rice or plumbers putty, plastic shopping bags like you're considering...all will do the job and easily removed later if you want.

Jeff,

You need something with some density.  Plastic bags will not do it!

I used some of my wife's old anklet socks packed tight.

I found it very easy to fill the hollow plastic stock on my Hatsan Mod85 Sniper. First in was a carved-to-fit piece of high density polyfoam to go deep inside near the grip. It "looked" like there might be a small hole through to the action and I didn't want any of the next items to wander into the trigger area. Next up was about ~1.5 pounds of high density poly beads better known as "blanket weights". The ones I got are about the same size as airsoft ammo, but irregular and heavier. Then another carved piece of polyfoam to cap-it-off. I did have to PUSH (compress the polyfoam) the butt plate back in place to install the 2 screws. Rubber butt pad attached to that with 2 more screws.

Overall weight is heavier, but balance is BETTER. Recoil feels lighter (of course) and hollow stock resonance is GONE. If I shake the rifle REALLY HARD I can hear a very faint rattle of the poly beads. I think the fact that the beads can actually move a little helps to absorb some of the recoil and resonant noise energy (like a dead blow hammer). Was too barrel heavy initially. Now the rifle comes up to bear more naturally and I get a quicker sight lock on target. Won't work for everyone, but it was a significant improvement for my use of this particular air rifle.

DIY tune/lube with a soda bottle guide and mine is smooth as glass. I don't believe this could have been achieved by filling the stock.

No matter how well tuned the rifle might be, the rifle is still gonna vibrate in that synthetic stock and that vibration is going to carry into the hollow butt stock and echo in your ear. Some it bothers and they look for ways to stop it, some it doesn't and they don't bother.
The rifles I did this on aren't 34P's, just inexpensive Hatsan Edges and a couple Webley Valuemax .20's and my way is pretty permanent but let's face it, most people won't buy one new let alone a used one that's been tinkered with and modded and since I never planned on trying to sell them anyway, I went the route I did. Btw, all the rifles I did this to were tuned, including the gas rammed ones. Yes, you can tune a gas rammed rifle and in the case of one of the Valuemax rifles, it was converted to a gas ram.

I mentioned above using PA pellet foam. That stuff is really dense and does work well. My way was cutting and dry fitting pieces until I had them the way I wanted, then each piece was coated on the bottom and 4 sides with black 100% silicone and inserted. I left the top uncoated and left them to sit for a few hours to let the silicone set. They were then capped with another layer of silicone and left to dry a few hours then had the butt pads re-installed.
The only one I did differently was the last Valuemax which has 2, 3 inch long steel bolts in the bottom half of the stock which were coated and shoved in to already made holes to balance the rifle a bit better. While I was at it, I also put 1/8" open cell neoprene strips everywhere inside the action the receiver would sit to soft bed it.
A few pics, not that anyone is likely to be interested....

Steve, would you say your mods successfully made the plastic stocks similar to wood stocks, soundwise?

Any idea how much weight was added?

Soundwise, just the usual sounds of the action firing, no echoes with the foam and rubberized silicone absorbing it. As far as weight, maybe half a pound or so and that would be the Valuemax I stuffed the bolts in. Just the foam and silicone adds very little to the weight.

x2 on using the dense foam form fitted to the stock.

I liked the idea of adding bolts to shift the balance to the rear a bit.  The number and size of the bolts would even allow tuning the weight a bit.

What I've done now with two of my stocks is this, I used window glazing to fill the pistol grip and the butt. Synthetic stocks are lighter, they need to be weighed down, PERIOD! If you decide to go this route, make sure you compact it in well and seal it off with a good 2 part epoxy. If air gets in, the glazing will dry out and break down. You don't want a rifle that sounds like a child's rattle when shot. Glazing is quite heavy and also dense, it works well by adding weight, absorbing recoil and it makes the stock sound solid when the rifle is discharged, ask my walther LGV challenger and BSA XLT, both are extremely accurate now, we'll the bsa will never out shoot the walther, but it's way more accurate than it was from the factory!

How about filling the stock with that spray foam insulation they use around windows?

I was thinking you could shove a plastic bag down inside the stock and then spray the insulation, starting with a little bit down in the bottom near the pistol grip, let it cure, spray a little more, let it cure, and work your way to the back end of the stock.  Then you could drill out a couple of cores to fit a couple of large bolts in place for weight balance.  The idea is you'd end up with  a filled stock with some balancing weight, and because  of the plastic bag that went in first, nothing would be stuck to the stock if you ever wanted to remove it.

I'd then do the soft bedding thing with neoprene under the action.  This is what I've been thinking about doing. Any flaws in this idea?  Thanks

You really don't need the rubberized silicone like I used, just cut up that PA pellet foam to be a tight fit and then basically ram it in there. Easily removed later on and for adding weight like a bolt, just poke holes with a screwdriver and jam those in too.

Yeah, I see an inherent flaw there RBQ, putting the spray/expanding foam in a bag "liner" so it can be removed is a good idea, but what's stopping it and the bolts from slipping, sliding and rattling around inside the stock when the rifle is in use? It's not stuck to the inside because you want it easely removable. You also don't need to make more work by drilling cores out for bolts, just spray a bit in and drop the bolts in quickly while it's still wet, let it set and spray more in, doesn't matter if they perfectly straight or not. Anyways, best of luck to whoever wants to do whatever method they like, I know mine worked for me, other methods for others. Each for his own right.

Cheers👍

Your plastic bag with something like plumbers putty would possibly do the trick better. Insert bag, pack the putty in nice and tight then whatever type of weight you might want if any and zip the bag closed. Again, easily removed later and the putty even stays pliable if you want it for an actual plumbing job...lol.

I was thinking if I filled it enough so it was slightly proud of the stock I could press the butt plate down and screw it back on and that would hold it secure.  That said, I stuffed it with rags this morning and will see how that works when I shoot it this afternoon.
Thanks!

p.s.  Any idea how much weight you added with the plumbers putty? Must have been a couple, three pounds?

I've never tried the putty, just seen where others have. I wanted to keep the weight down, yet still fill up the hollow space and the PA foam at the time seemed to fit the bill.

I used an old ankle weight. Cut off a section and let out enough lead shot until it fit in the stock of my Gamo. My groups tightened up.

I packed the buttstock of my Raven with plastic bags... pack enough in and itll get dense

OK, compressing the foam just might work out here, open the butt, have the correct amount of weights ready, nuts/bolts or whatever it is you gonna use, spray in 1/3 of the butt's volume, toss in the weights and screw the buttpad back on super quick befor the foam starts to expand out the back end. Let it cure for 12hours and you should be good to go! But you better be "dang" fast buddy or things could get messy really quick lol!! I used about 750grams in my walthers stock, brought the rifle to 6kg with a big scope. Heavy yes, but alot less hold sensitive now and much easier to shoot.

I don't know the way that foam expands if you get too much in there it could split the stock.  Really want it to have a way to escape if you misjudge the amount required.IMHO

dont fill it completly when you add the foam in its liquid/non-expanded form. cover the stock with plastic sheets etc to keep it clean, cuz the foam will stick to everything (including you) and be diffiuclt to remove. After its fully exapnaded put the butt pad back on

From experience trying the expanding foam, yep it expands and will follow the inside contours of the stock without splitting it (remember, I did mine on an inexpensive Hatsan Edge stock) and yep it dries, but only the top. Everything under that top crust stayed soft and never hardened because of no air getting to it. I went back a few weeks later on the first rifle I did it to expecting to do some scraping to get it out and replace it with denser foam pieces and found a soggy, nasty mess under the top hardened crust. On the up side, it washed out pretty well with just hot water.

If you're going to try it, by all means, just do it in small layers and work your way out.

Pillow polyester fiberfill. Always have pillows that just do not sleep well. The filler material Works perfect, packs tight. Done ever syn stock this way. Still got a box full of the stuff. Firms up the stock and no hollow sound. Easy to remove. It will pack all the way forward. JMO
