Title: So this is what it's all about!? - 2018 ISSF 10m Air Rifle World Cup video
Post by: Stinger177 on December 05, 2018, 10:23:44 PM
The action starts around 4:30 into it.
I'm not sure I could stand the excitement and stress.
Let's not talk about my shooting (dis)abilities.

I DO know that I would just about kill for any one of those rifles though.

not much excitement unless you're a shooter . . .
the stress is self-induced, until you learn to control it . . .

take a trip to Colorado Springs to the Olympic Training center some time - superb facility - superb shooters . . . and i will wager money that anyone there will do what they can to help you become a better shooter . . .

I'm sure they would.

I'm trying to find a club in the Denver Metro area that has air gun shooting events. I would like to get involved.

Amazing how involved this sport really is. Specialized clothing, etc.

Dude has a T-shirt with ISSF TV on it. Comcast doesn't provide that channel in this area.  ;) :D

I have a 10 meter Feinwerkbau however my front and rear sights are not elevated like these shooters. I assume this allows a more heads up stance. these "standoffs" must be avalable some where. Does anyone here have the elevated sights?
TIA

I'm very new to all of the variations of sights, but I'm also hungry to learn about them.

My knowledge is limited to browsing around on various merchant website. Here is one that has a LOT of stuff; FWB, Anschutz, Walther and more: www.champchoice.com (http://www.champchoice.com) .

What model FWB do you have? I'm jealous.

stinger,
my 10 meter is Feiverkbau 603. This is the last single stroke pneumatic they made. it's truly a work of art.
I used to own PCP Anshutz 2002.

Nice! I'm even more jealous now.

I think my MP532 is about as close as I'll ever get to a good match rifle, or at least one that matches my ability.

It's truly a poor mans FWB. Looks Soviet, shoots Deutsche.

Is anyone still using SSP's in match shooting, even on an amateur level?

i still see SSP's occasionally at ISSF matches . . . but mostly in pistols. the people shooting the Baikal's are shooting as well as anyone else - some better. rifle shooters are mostly PCP's now, but CO2's are still common as they are less expensive and are now considered "entry level"

i still see a fair amount of SSP's that come out for recreational shooting

. . . Does anyone here have the elevated sights?
TIA

as Stinger177 said, contact http://champchoice.com/store/main.aspx (http://champchoice.com/store/main.aspx) for the sights you are looking for

Yes, that is so that the shooter does not have to lay his face down on the stock.  An upright head helps with balance.  So you will also see some (RH shooters) cant the rifle to the left, so the head can be even more upright.  That is how I shoot, head upright and rifle canted to the left.

Sight riser blocks are available in different heights.
But make sure you specify the rifle brand, as the sight rails are slightly different between some brands.
They even have off-set riser blocks, that shift the sight to the side.  That is for us canters, so we don't have to cant the rifle so much.

I attend at least 1 Lady Husker Rifle Team match a year. FWB, Walther, Steyr, Anschutz; these girls have north of $10 grand wrapped up in their rifles. Go to one of these university matches, it'll humble you.

A young woman from here in Savannah got a full ride to shoot on the Georgia Souther U. Team. I need to follow them like I do the football team. It's  about 60 miles from here.

Good for her, and the school for that kind of support.

For anyone in IL, there is an outstanding facility in Bloomington where you can go watch some of these matches.  Central IL Precision Shooters.  http://www.cipshooters.org/temp/pages/index.html (http://www.cipshooters.org/temp/pages/index.html)

If it is an NRA open match you can even participate.  Bring your rifle, but leave your pride at home!

Stinger177 -

If you want to learn more about 10 meter, go take the NRA Level 1 Rifle Coach School (Smallbore and Air) over a weekend.

You'll get the straight techniques and learn all about 10 meter three position air rifle.

I took it a year ago, and and now am working on my USA Shooting Coach Academy - Advanced Coach Rifle Cert.  I volunteer and coach 4-H, but I shoot 10 meter at home 3 to 4 times a week and love it.

Also, here is a great book on the subject:  http://www.champchoice.com/store/main.aspx?p=ItemDetailOptions&item=WR100 (http://www.champchoice.com/store/main.aspx?p=ItemDetailOptions&item=WR100)

Some guys golf. Some guys shoot off the bench. I shoot 3 position for fun.

I also hunt and do IDPA, but 3 position air rifle is very good training and also very calming for me.

I wish it were more popular in the US.  So, it comes as no surprise than many guys that shoot air rifle do not know a lot about it.

Also, did you know that you can shot 3 Position Sporter without all the jackets, pants, and cost and have a blast?

My sporter 10 meter air rifle is Crosman Challenger and I use the Peep Sights that come on it.  $595.  Lol.  I own 2 of them.  My son shoots a CZ T200, which is deadly accurate.

Here are the rules and regs for 3 position sporter:  http://thecmp.org/wp-content/uploads/Rules.pdf (http://thecmp.org/wp-content/uploads/Rules.pdf)

Do you know who Lones Wigger is?  He is one of the most decorated 3 position athletes in history.  Wigger became the only athlete to win medals in all three Olympic rifle shooting disciplines and was selected as one of the U.S. Olympic Committee’s 100 Golden Olympians in 1996.

He served two tours in Vietnam.  What a legacy.

Enjoy!  Thanks for the post everyone's replies.

Best Regards,
Fletch

Thank you very much Fletch. There is so little information out there. This gives me a good direction.

A friend asked me why I don't join a shooting club. Fact is, there are none in the Denver area that shoot airguns, even though their website may say they do. Admittedly, I have only tried contacting by email and by phone (meaning I haven't physically gone to the location) but I have never received a reply.

At least now I can practice the proper technique in my backyard given the info you listed.

Thanks again,

Dennis   :D

Sounds good Dennis.  Get the book - it is great.  Study a position.  Get in the position.  Shoot the position.  Rinse.  Repeat. Enjoy.

Don't forget the Air Rifle book
http://www.champchoice.com/store/Main.aspx?p=ItemDetailOptions&item=9912E (http://www.champchoice.com/store/Main.aspx?p=ItemDetailOptions&item=9912E)

SSP is fine.
The reason most are not using SSP is due to the extra muscle force needed to charge the SSP.  It activates muscles that you want to be calm.  And depending on the rifle, the charging action can be disruptive on the stance.
If you plan to shoot 3P, CA or CO2 is the recommended power.  Depending on the rifle, charging a SSP would be disruptive on the prone and kneeling positions, making you break position to charge the rifle.
But for home use, who cares, use what you have/want to.

A few thought for casual home shooting.
- If you get a full size 10m rifle, it will be about 11 pounds.  That can be hard on the lower back, especially if you are older.  A shooting jacket or back support belt would be highly advised.
- - I use a back support belt from the hardware store.  But that belt is NOT competition legal.

- For home use, without the jacket or belt, I would look at a lighter (junior) rifle, like the Crosman Challenger 2009 or the new Daisy 599 (CA), or a Daisy 853 (SSP), or even a junior precision rifle.
- - The only negative that I have heard about the Crosman Challenger 2009, is that the air tank is undersized, and may not last a full match, requiring an air refill in the middle of a match.
- - The 853 is available from the CMP for about $100.  BUT, the stock has a 12 inch LoP.  If you have a longer LoP, you have to lengthen the stock.
- - A FWB, Anshutz or Walther junior precision rifle would also work; like the FWB-P70-Jr.  Lighter than a full size rifle, so easier on the back.

For what it's worth, I'm not really considering investing in much more than what I already own, which are an IZH 46M and an MP532.

I figure at my age, those two should be sufficient for my playtime needs.   :D

The IZH-532 should be just fine.
