hello everyone,
I'm looking for advice on how i would go about refinishing the "blueing" on a old Sheridan blue streak. The barrel has separated from the lower chamber as well, but it is brass so i am assuming that i can just re solder? correct me if i'm wrong please... i have ordered a refurbishing kit because the seals have given out also. they are in the mail and i am hoping to get this put back together for Christmas to gift to my dad. this was his teenage airgun. any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks GTA

The finish in the sheridans isn't bluing. The closest you're going to get is " brass black ". It can be found at most hobby stores.
As far as resoldering the barrel, best leave that to someone like Mac1 Airguns, unless you're really confident in your abilities. It requires a jig, if the separation is bad, and it's easy to screw up the valve, seeing as that is soldered in, as well.

Yep... not something I'd attempt. I have one here with stripped valve threads. It's waiting for a donor to come along.

How bad is the separation?
I had one that was just starting and did not see it until it was out in the sun and could see a sliver of light show between the barrel and the tube right behind the rear sight. I removed the rear sight (recommended) and "glued" it with some Loctite "Black Max" 380.

As said by the others...
If the barrel is separated considerably you are best leaving it to a Pro and you won't get it back by Christmas. If you tackle int your self do it while completely disassembled while replacing your new seals and even then you need to be
really
careful on the amount of heat used. You could melt the soldered-in valve retaining solder and then you got a pretty paper weight.

the separation is only the front 6 inches of the barrel so i figured it wouldn't be that bad to quickly heat and apply a new bead and was not worried because i have all new internal parts on the way for a rebuild but i'm new to this and am not exactly sure of what i'm talking about. all i do know is i'm good at soldering and have done it many times before just not to a air rifle. thanks longhunter i just ordered some brassblack.

That is odd.
Go to the "new members" gate and welcome 20 Noobs and then you can attach a pic. (easy)
Would like to see what you are dealing with.

Tim at Mac-1 in Signal Hill is the all time professional for reviving, reconditioning, rebuilding, restoring, repairing the old Sheridans.
These are highly revered classic rifles that should be "done right".
This is "Dads" old airgun that I'm betting he has some cherished memories with.
if "done right" this will be an AWESOME and very Special Christmas gift for Dad.
Tim works Monday thru Saturdays.
Summerland to Signal Hill is 100-110 miles.
Worth the drive, give him a call, and go gas up the car.

it's fairly easy to re solder them but it needs prepping very well
on the one we did which was separated at the breech plus was blowing on the tp we cleaned it up with scotch bright then used an acid etch flux and a map gas torch to get plenty of heat in
we had wired the two parts together with welding wire before starting to solder
I was worried about the valve to start with but my dad who has done a lot of soldering on model railway loco kits said even if you melt a bit of it it's not going to do it any harm as long as it doesn'y migrate out the front and effect the compression chamber
I also put a bit of grease in the valve nut thread and screwed the nut in just in case any solder got in the threads but I do have a thread chaser if needed
