Gamo Whisper - Tightening Barrel Pivot Screw
«
on:

I just noticed that as I've broken in my Gamo Whisper, the barrel pivot screw seems to have loosened or worn in. I can cock my rifle, lift the barrel, let go, and the barrel will drop with gravity. I saw Paul C. in the Pyramydair video say that it shouldn't do that, but when I tried to tighten the screw, it was tight.
Does the Whisper barrel tend to act that way? I've heard something about Gamo using a chemical lock on the pivot screw. Has anyone have any info on that? This is my first air rifle, and I'm really enjoying it. I just want to nip it in the bud if something is wrong.
Any suggestions?

Nothing is wrong. When you cock/break the barrel and the trigger sear catches the piston....the barrel will be very loose. And the barrel will move with just one finger or by gravity.
The barrel pivot bolt is loose if the barrel is closed and the barrel wiggles left to right (Barrel sway). Crosmans do have this problem as their pivot bolts are not chemically bonded. Gamo's pivot bolts are, so the barrel might wiggle after thousands of shots (My Big Cat has over 10,000 shots and there's no barrel sway). Unfortunately if the Gamo barrel sways their pivot bolt is very hard to loosing.

Thank you very much Gamo2hammerli. I do have a tiny bit of barrel movement when the barrel is broken and I grip and put pressure on the muzzle break. That was starting to concern me. I do get good accuracy(when I do my part since I never used a scope before this airgun
). I didn't want to break the pivot screw loose and screw up something.
I have a photo of two 10-shot groups at 10 meters (up-ended trashcan for a bench, with a bag rest and a stool) of about 3/8 - 1/2 inch that convinces me that the barrel movent probably isn't affecting accuracy, but I can't post them yet (I'm too new).

Deane,
Are you saying that there is vertical play when the barrel is in the up and locked position? If so, there is a problem of some kind. The latch that controls the lock-up is very soft, so if you put a moderate pressure on the end of barrel you may feel a slight flex but there should be no free play. You may want to make sure the plunger that engages the cross pin (looks like the end of a chisel) is clean and moves freely when depressed.

Thanks for the reply QVTOM! I haven't noticed any vertical movement, but I have noticed horizontal (left to right) movement when I put pressure to the right on my barrel. I have an e-mail into GamoUSA customer service, but they haven't replied yet. I have a GTR IV trigger on the way and I don't want to install it or pack my stock with batten if I'm going to have to return it to Gamo. I going to try to do a home tune when I get my trigger. I'm getting groups of 1/4 to 3/4 inch at 15 meters when I do my part (50% of the time LOL), so I don't think the movement is affecting the accuracy.

The GRT4 trigger made a huge difference in my groups. It was well worth the money and effort. My shop is 60ft long so It works well for sighting in. I can get sub 1/4" in cen. to cen. groups. with Crosman 14.3gr pointed hunting pellets. The next best performer is the 18.1gr JSB jumbo exact. For some reason the Crosman 14.3 premieres don't seem to group as well.
Enjoy.

Apologies if my reply is out of time but I have only just read this thread. I have a tuned Gamo Whisper X (the one with the excellent poly thumb hole stock) and after shooting several thousand pellets the barrel pivot clamp got loose and after the gun was cocked before latching the barrel it could drop down of its own accord. Luckily with the Whisper X #25 Torx screws secure the barrel in the receiver forks and luckily for the shooter / home tuner Gamo doesn't Locktite them. So to tighten up the barrel pivot clamp you just need to tighten the Torx screws slightly until the barrel stays put anywhere along its travel when you take your hand off it. Hope that helps.

From what I have heard you need a torch to melt there chemical glue. If you choose this route I would suggest removing the piston and seal along with the breach seal.
My stoeger had this problem so I replaced the plastic breach washers with brass ones, I can cock the gun and the barrel stays where I leave it. After a while it will affect accuracy as it gets worse.

Thank you all! I reluctantly returned the Whisper to Wal-Mart. It was getting close to the 90-day return date and I didn't want to take the chance of getting stuck with it. It had broken in nicely and even the trigger was much smoother. My intention was to order a new one from their Website the next day on our "tax-free weekend" and save about $12 on the tax, but unfortunately all they had was the .22 Whisper. I had already bought a .22 Benji Titan to play with while I was "Whisperless," so I didn't want to get another .22. Two days after the "tax-free weekend," it went back up on Wal-Mart's Website and I ordered a new .177 Whisper. I've decided to break it in using just the open sights. I love open sights and enjoy the challenge of using them. I have a JM tune kit (spring, seals, and lubes) and a GRT IV trigger, and will be home-tuning the Whisper as soon as it stops dieseling. I intend to order the bushings and seal for the Benji and home-tune it too.
My new Whisper arrived at my house yesterday while I was at work. My wife called me at work and "tore me a new one" because I hadn't told her I'd ordered a replacement and she had to sign for it.
I was surprised they delivered it to my home here in MA. I was expecting them to send it to the store as they had the other one (free shipping site to store). I actually paid for shipping to get it faster and thought it would go to the same place.
I fired a 10-shot string this morning with open sights from 20 yds and actually got 40% on paper
It dieseled big time (I haven't cleaned the barrel yet) and the chrony ran from 1100 fps on the first shot with 7.56 gn Gamo magnums to 911.0 fps on the sixth shot, then back up in fps. I didn't clean the barrel yet because I wanted to get in a few shots before I brought in my setup in preparation for Irene. I'll clean it later and put a few hundred rounds through it until it stops dieseling, then run the chrony again before I tune it so I can have a good baseline. I have "straight shooters" pellet samplers for the .177 and the .22 on the way, so those will help too.
Again, thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it.

I always clean the barrel on any new gun I buy.
You would be surprised how much gunk you can find. Virtually every person who complains of poor accuracy when first shots are made haven't done this.
