Title: Which scope?
Post by: Hogstir on June 15, 2018, 02:44:26 PM
Just getting started in HFT. I ordered a tx200 and am wondering about which scope to use.
I already have a 3-12 Hawk airmax with the large sidewheel but I understand that you can now use 16X.
Can’t afford another Hawk scope right now so I am looking at a UTG 4-16 Swat accushot with the 100mm wheel.
Is there going to be a big difference between using a 12X Vs a 16X?
    Which scope should I use?

When you said HFT, I'll assume you really meant AAFTA Hunter Division, and not Hunter Field Target:

With all other things being equal, there will be a 33% difference in ranging errors between 12x and 16x scopes. If your average focus ranging error is 4yds at 12x, it will be 3yds at 16x. It's your decision.

OK I’ll try the 4-16.
  Thanks.

"With all other things being equal..."

Including objective size and glass quality.

That also means that it would not be surprising if a Hawke 4-12x50 focus ranges better than a UTG 4-16x44.

Well I have the Hawk set up on my HW95 so I could compare how they range an pick the one which ranges the most accurately.

Hogstir,  Just my opinion I would just use the Hawke you have at 12 power until you save up to get the scope you really want .  In my opinion for what its worth, I used a 4-16 Hawke Air max in that class last year with it set on 12 power as that was the limit then. I did pretty well at range finding and placed well at the shoots I attended. That being said I have been through three new scopes of various makes and prices all the way up to one costing well over a grand and my findings are there is no magic scope/ YES some are a little better than others but the difference is minimal when only using it at 16 power.  You really wont be at a great disadvantage at 12 power especially being new at the game!  Many other things more important to learn, trust me!!
Another thing I'm willing to bet is anyone you shoot with will be more than happy to let you try their scope to see if it's "the one for you"  Field target people are a great bunch and always willing to lend a hand!!
Don't make a rash decision on buying a scope just to say I have 16 power as you may find that MAGIC scope on someones rifle at the shoot you go to and be sorry you didn't wait and look around first!

Good Luck what ever choice you make,  J.L.

I'm with Scott on this.  I had that Hawke Airmax and it ranged just as good (at 12X) as the Airmax 6-24x50 (at 16X) that I am now using.  I think it was a little sharper, too.  I would definitely use the Airmax that you have for at least a few matches, and try out some other scopes  that interest you.  People are SUPER friendly at FT matches and usually more than willing to let you try out their toys.

Jeff also gives great advice.
