Crosman 1400/Sears 1269300 comparison

I finally have my Sears model 1269300 refurbished and I’ve had a couple of weeks to do a side by side comparison to my standard model 1400. I have resealed both guns the only difference being the Sears model now has a Mac1 Airguns O-ring seal on the piston and the Crosman has a stock parachute style piston seal. I owned a model 1400 as a teenager but I lusted for the Sears Roebuck variant because it came with a dovetail cut in the barrel for a scope mount.
The two guns handle identically and are remarkably similar and consistent in power. The model 1400 is quite catholic in its taste for pellets. It gobbles up just about anything and shoots good groups with just about any pellet. The Sears model is much pickier but it shoots fine groups with CPHP’s so it’s all good. Shooting CPHP’s there is nothing to choose in accuracy between the two. When I switch to higher quality pellets the Model 1400 eases ahead.
Anyone familiar with the model 1400 knows about the weird pump. These guns are most efficiently pumped with a short pause at the top of the stroke to let the somewhat restricted inlet port completely fill the pump chamber. I noticed a difference in power out put between the two guns and traced it to the pumping technique. IMO the Mac1 O-ring piston head seal is not as efficient as the stock parachute seal. Pumped too quickly the O-ring seal will burp air making a noticeable squeak at the end of the pump stroke. Pumped slowly and carefully it does not squeak and pump for pump it makes as much power as the Crosman with the stock piston seal.
Both guns are now making approximately 620 FPS for 8 pump strokes, shooting 14.3gr pellets. Accuracy is also very consistent with both guns capable of 5/8” groups at 25 yards. Both of these guns have adjustable triggers and in spite of what you will hear about the pull weight of the self cocker’s triggers these are both very good. I usually pump these guns 8 times for hunting and the trigger pull on both guns is between 3 and 4 pounds and very crisp.
All in all not unexpectedly similar performance between the two. The big advantage of the Sears model scope mount was nullified by my having added one to my 1400 previously. I did discover one difference between the two that I found unexpectedly advantageous. The old model 140 style breach cover is superior to the later bolt style probe. It latches closed pretty positively on this fifty year old air rifle and keeps crud out of the breach area. The later bolt style is prone to getting flipped open by rubbing against your clothes or underbrush (happened to me more than once). I missed a squirrel last season because I had inadvertently let the bolt flip open and didn’t realize until I pulled the trigger.
Never as powerful as a Benjamin the model 1400 suites me for its combination of weight, handling, and accuracy. The 12 to 13 fpe these two guns make is plenty for what I hunt and the short ranges I hunt at. I have no qualms about taking a bead on small game at fifty yards with either. I know they can do the job.

Very nice gun, and also, thank you, for making me realize that I, too, am a Luddite (had to look it up first, though)

RBQ thanks for looking it up for me, I too fit the definition
Here I thought
I was being deprived because the guns I got as a child were all from Sears, They bought almost everything there
Then as a young adolescent I crossed the Canadian border with my grand parents and was asked where I was from/ born, when I paused not expecting this question the border patrol suggested Roebuck n Sears LMBO
I do also like the covered bolt breach system, and was going to copy that on the parts I sent to BP Sam, but went another direction on that project, but Sam Yang big bores use a very simpler version of that system still

And thank you for the parts James. I put a new parachute seal on the piston you sent me. It is standing by in case I don’t like the Mac1 O-ring set up. Having that extra piston is what gave me the courage to attack the original one with a Dremel tool. I only chronographed 10 pellets from each gun because my cell phone/Chrono app is a PITA. Both guns have average velocities between 615 and 630 FPS with CPHP’s. The Crosman badged gun is the stronger of the two by an average of 8 FPS. I won’t claim more than that because I don’t trust the chrono app to be accurate. For instance, I had to put up a bigger, wooden back stop, to reflect more sound back at the phone. The little cardboard box I had been using to tack up targets didn’t make enough noise when a pellet hit it.

It sounds like you are getting close to normal readings, I tried an early app like that and had too much ambient noise to be repetetive.
Always happy to help one out when I see the opportunity

I too like the sleekness of my 140 with the sliding breech cover. Small, maneuverable, and like you said nothing to hang up
and catch on anything.

I cannot say if I like the sliding breech cover over a bolt since all I have is the 1400 first variant with sliding cover to judge by but being a 1968 model that was bought for me new by my mom at the air force base sporting goods store I can say the breech cover still operates like new with a positive detent when closed that has never come open during use.
It has been used and abused by me as a very young kid out hunting in the brackish waters of Cocoa Beach, FL on the thousand islands surrounding where I lived and hunted. It has been dropped in the water more times than I can count back then and just allowed for the water to drain out of it and pumped up and shot out of the innards . Then continue with the hunting. It got wiped down with an oily rag once in awhile if I remembered to do so. It then got stuck in a closet for 40 years until about 6 years ago when I got back into airguns and found it hiding in a dark corner. I added some oil to the pump linkage and chamber and it pumped right up and shot just as I remember it shooting when it was put up. Even held air overnight.
I have rebuilt it completely now and modified it into a .177 cal using a 1377 breech and maximus barrel and bolt. Still have the original parts and the 1377 breech was modified to fit the 1400 so it can be converted back to original 1400 with in just a few minutes. The bolt in the 1377 breech closes tight against the o ring so it does not easily flip up or get moved open in use.
It shoots 8.44s at 790 fps on 6 pumps and 860 at 8 pumps.

That's pretty interesting,
and easy to scope now. Doesn't look to be in bad shape for the abuse it took!
I think I like the 140 the best (it's my Daughter's now). It's a 65' and just feels solid. I have a 73' 1400 (my Son's now) that is a second variant I believe, with a bolt handle
that really feels good too, and a Slim line 1400, best I can tell it's a 1978. The Slim Line is a beautiful gun but to me doesn't have the indestructible feel of the 140.
Similar to the heft of a early mid-sixties car opposed to a late 70's almost 80's car.
This is just my opinion and I know what they say about those. It's the feel in hand that tells the story for me.
I'm a luddite too (also had to look it up) and I'm not even Amish.

Yep agree with all that as well but I have only had first variant 1400s so really nothing to compare to. I have another stock first variant 1400 that is in a little better shape than the one pictured but no pics of it.
I am an old skool curmudgeon luddite as well.
