Title: Benji Trail NP2 .22...Wow!
Post by: ohplnkr on December 03, 2016, 05:33:49 PM
Just came in from sighting in my new friend. I must say I'm impressed. It took quite a bit of adjustment on the CP 3x9/40 AO, I was concerned at first. I don't remember having a scope that far out unless it quit on me. Any way once I brought it in @25yds it turned into the tack driver I've been told it could be. The adjustments are good for 35 yds too as I was pleasantly surprised. It really is different for a break barrel air gun. I had to hold it like a .22 powder burner. I love it. A nice secure hold that gets rewarded with a bit of a kick and accurate to boot...that's fun. Hope it holds together as I am one happy camper with it right now. I used CPHP's  for sighting in, I'll try my RWS dome next week. ;D

Ordered one from crosman on Cyber Monday, should have been here today but got delayed by the snow.  Want it to get here now so I can go shoot it!

I really like my Trail NP2 also.  I went with the wood stock.  I think it helps stabilize and balance it more than the synthetic.  Barrel needed a good cleaning, and took a few rounds to get the dieseling from the chamber oil from the factory cleared.  Then it settled in for very nice accuracy.  Kick after break in is mild compared to my springer, and very quiet.

OhPlnkr, consider the H&N Field target trophy 14.66 grain pellets for your Trail NP2.  If you like the accuracy now, you will really like it with these pellets.  After trying these pellets, nothing else touches the bore of my Trail NP2.  They shoot around 750 fps at 20 FPE in mine.

Thats what mine shoots too.  But a lot of people talk about jsb 18.13 pellets in em too.  I wanna try em, cuz i like jsbs thinner, softer skirts

My NP2 runs 15.89's the most consistent out to 50yds
The 18.13 JSB just dont run very good out passed 30yds
I shoot strictly domed ammo, not sure how the other stuff acts?

I just got some JSBs 18gr pellets for mine. Have not shot them yet. But I have shot some H&N Baracuda Match 21.14gr last week and they gave me the best group from my Trail NP2 I have ever seen from it.

I had to order some pellets on line cause everything I've picked up at wal-mart, academy, and gander mountain have been horrendous, terrible. I've read alot of material about finding the right pellet. Here on gta I'm seeing alot about h&n fit or h&n baricuda. Those are the 2 I've bought. Came in yesterday. When I get a chance to shoot em if I don't get good results, I'll either trash the np2 and write bad reviews everywhere I can. Or some ones gotta take it and tell what's wrong with it. I've shot over 1,000 pellets through it using premier hollow points, and others. So far not impressed at all. Crossing my fingers on these new h&n pellets

Have you checked your screws? I have one that seems to prefer copper coated pellets also.

Lym rat,
It may all be in the hold you are using. If you are using the artillery hold you will have problems. Hold it like a .22 powder burner and you will probably see a difference. I couldn't believe the difference in the way my Trail NP2 shoots, its an awesome piece and one of the most accurate 35yarders I ever shot. Like mentioned before check the screws, scope mount  and whatever basics need to be gone over.  I sure hope this helps. It's a great AG and I hope you can give it more time.   Thanks John

There's a lot of reasons it don't group for you.
I've seen nothing to tell me what you have tried aside from pellets.
If you decide to trash it? I'll pay shipping to take it.

Again Classic Shooter verses ammo  ::)
90% shooter 10%ammo
Its always the guns fault cause shooter aint what they believe they are
Air gunning aint for anyone that refuses to learn basic discipline(s)
Much more to it then barrel pointing and trigger pulling, money doesnt buy acquired skill.
Ill offer you$100 plus freight  :P ;) 8)

The JSB 18's have a loose breach fit in mine(aka CPHP type wobbles)
I wont buy them any more after this tin has had several fall from the breach on latch up.
Two of the Vortex loads are really shining here lately in the NP2(seat VERY WELL,fly true etc, etc)
My NP2 is my back door rig,it leans cocked and loaded at all times by the back door for quick access to small furry/feathered POI.
MY AT 44 and two BT65's are the go to hounds for serious round placement with authority unequaled by my Mrods of days passed
Anyway . . . . . . look into the Vortex ammo,its made by H&N(pretty dang good)

Thats what mine shoots too.  But a lot of people talk about jsb 18.13 pellets in em too.  I wanna try em, cuz i like jsbs thinner, softer skirts

I have the conventional stocked version of that gun, the Summit NP2.

Mine's still dieseling after 60 rounds with CPHP ammo. Groups are mostly good, with the occasional flyer that's off by over an inch at 14 yards. I believe it is mostly the ammo; lots of testaments about how these are amazingly pellet picky and hold picky. I'm not going to waste any of my good pellets I bought for it until I've shot a couple hundred of the cheap CPHP and CPUM to make sure it is good and broken in.

Shooting at 10 yards seated, off my knees, I got it reliably zeroed. I stood up and shot another group, and the POI moved down by over an inch. Hold consistency is paramount with these lightweight powerhouses. As was said earlier, a heavy stock benefits magnum springers, as the extra weight removes some of the hold sensitivity.

I found that one of the stock screws on mine wasn't snug and wasn't thread-locked properly from the factory. The first thing I did when I opened the gun was to take out all three stock screws, clean them, then properly apply blue Loctite. The included scope rings also seem pretty junky. They'll be the first things to go, if I'm having a problem with a wandering zero.

You might find these interesting to watch: I'm doing a multi-part review on it; just a few minutes for each part. (Part 1 needs to be re-shot, so forgive the lack of it so far) Part 5 is coming soon.

Lym Rat,
How did it shoot for you with the new pellets?  If you are still unsatisfied, consider getting with a forum member in your area.  He can give the gun a look over and see if it has an obvious problem such as a failed breech seal.  He can also put a few shots downrange and see if there is a more optimal hold which would help.  I live way over in Arizona, and can be no real help.  Best of luck.  I know the trail np2 can be a good rifle.

My NP2 Tail had issues when I bought it used. First off the pellets were hitting the baffle in the shroud. I fixed that by drilling it out bigger. This was the single biggest issue...After that I put new washers in the barrel pivot. I also did a Charlie trigger but that didn't improve much by itself. A lighter return spring will give the same result for less money...In the end I have a fine shooting rifle, but the biggest issue was pellets hitting the baffles...

My new favorite FedEx man delivered my NP2 combo today. I've done the initial cleaning, whipped out my Veritas low angle block plane to chamfer the sharp edges around the stock casting, mounted the scope, checked all the stock screws (only 1 had any sign of blue locktite). Put about 30 pellets (Crosman Premier Destroyers) through it in the dark in 16 degree weather. Got it roughly zeroed in at 15 yards just to see if I could. The CenterPoint 3-9x40AO seems plenty good even though I was beginning to wonder as it started off 5" low and 4" right. Being brand new to air gunning....ok....except for my Daisy Model 880 that I've had forever but haven't shout in years...I don't really have anything to compare it to but overall, I like the rifle very much. Fit and finish could be better of course but for a gun combo that ended up costing me $181.10 after the 10% discount at PA and Crosman's $25 rebate, I don't see anything to complain about.

I will remove the scope and run a few hundred thru it to do a proper break in this weekend. I've got a supply of H&N Field Target Trophy's on the way for when I get serious.

Thinking about starting a "I'm a newbie with a rifle" thread just to document the process.

Terry once you have it broke in try some H&N Baracude Match. They really fit nice in mine and shot good 10 yard groups.  10 yards is all I can shoot it right now, soon as it warms up some I will try them at longer distance.

Bunch of lead thru it tonight just for grins. 15 yards is a decent group for a total novice. 30 yards is a mile off. Well right and low again. Guessing that must be me or something is really weird. I'm gonna quit shooting at targets and just blow thru the break in and then come back and put the scope back on it.

I bought my .22 cal Summit NP2 on sale at PA for $157.50 about 6 months ago. Tore it down and gave it a good cleaning and lube tune.  Seals seem good so I didn't replace them.  Unlike some have experienced, I am having a hard time deciding on which pellet is the best because mine shoots everything from the 11.85 gr Sig Sauer Alloys to the 21 gr H&N Baracudas very well.  However, finding the right pellet is a must with any spring/gas piston rifle, this one's just not near as picky as some.  Did some chrony tests yesterday and shot some 6 shot groups at 25 yards on the hood of my truck and was averaging sub 1 inch groups with every pellet I shot.  Chrony tests as follows:
14.66 gr H&N FTT -      785FPS   20.06FPE
21 gr H&N Bar. Pwr -    606FPS  17.13FPE
11.75 gr GTO Alloys -  901FPS  21.19FPE
17 gr Dynamic Alloys - 704FPS  18.71FPE
My best group (barely) was shot with the FTTs, however, even though I like them OK on squirrels, their terminal performance on anything bigger hasn't impressed me compared to the Predator Polys or the H&N Hornets, which I didn't have time to try.

In my experience, Destroyers are junk pellets. 30 yards would REALLY be stretching their range, due to them having a low ballistic coefficient. (Draggy) For cheap break in pellets, try Crosman Premier Domed Ultra Magnums (CPUM) Crosman Premier Hollow Points. (CPHP) They both shoot pretty well out of my NP2. The consensus is that these generally prefer heavier pellets, like in the 18 gr. Range. These aren't as cheap as the 14.3 gr.  CP pellets, but totally worth it for top accuracy.

The stock rings are a bit iffy to me; I may replace them right after lightening the trigger pull weight.

They should really change the name of that np pistol to something else.  I don't understand how they can be from the same company, as I truly believe the only way to make that thing shoot good, is to completely take it apart and replace everything and then don't shoot it.

Even on the bargain , it'd been returned at least once  before but the guy thought it was one of the couple that were returned sent out for warranty repairs, then returned again...so I wasn't expecting much to begin with, but that gun is just horrible.
