I sent off for a Lothar Walther barrel for my .22 marauder today and have a few questions.
- The stock barrel is .500" OD and the new one is .630" so I expect some things will change. Is there going to be a harmonics issue to figure out with a different barrel diameter that will need to be compensated with by adjusting the length? I understand benchrest shooters will use different colored markers to "paint" their bullets and shoot different loads so the velocity changes. That will help them find out if the bullet is leaving near the node of the sinewave or near the apex by where the different colored holes are on white paper. There are people that will adjust weights until their accuracy improves so that is another empirical method. This may not be anything to worry about though.
- What would be the best way of turning the barrel OD to fit in the receiver?
- Should I bore the ID slightly so the pellet is just about to engage in the rifling when the bolt is fully forward or just leave it as is?
Any input is welcome.

About .001 clearance for the pellet or bullet you will be shooting. This should be maintained on center with the lan diameter and the leade should be ~1-1.5* per side. Depth will be dictated by the bearing length of the projectile. A custum chamber reamer is your bes friend. It will have a pilot that will maintain a concentric cut to the lan diameter. The rifling should just show up when the bolt is at full battery. The best thing to do is slug the barrel right off to determine the lan diameer and he groove diameter. Those dimensions will determine the required reamer dimensions. Check out YouTube vid on making an Air gun chamber reamer.

Engineering is the art of modeling materials we don't wholly understand, into shapes we can't precisely analyze, so as to withstand forces we can't properly asses, in such a way that the public has no reason to suspect the extent of our ignorance.

Thanks guys, I have some direction now. It looks like I will be making my own throating reamer with a live pilot. I may cut the flutes with an endmill before I harden the tool steel then dress the edges after the hardening process. I doubt I would be able to use a grinding stone on the endmill that I have at work. Now its time to start making the necessary dimensions. If I have questions I will ask.

do you have a surface grinder at work and a whirrly jig (indexing spin fixture)? that's what I use when push comes to shove.
