This is a fantastic resource on the mechanical properties of steels in the context of heat treating.

Scott, there's good stuff in there for everyone. Even you
One section deals with why certain elements are alloyed and their benefits. Very helpful for picking the correct grade for the job. Then there is the end with mechanical properties that result from different tempering temps for most alloys, that how I found the guide when searching for yield values of 4140 when treated.

One shop I worked the foreman had a couple OLD hard bound books put out by steel co about their products, primarily tool steels.
I really wish I had those books, they looked to have been written in the late 1960's.
The one co mad a matrix of tool steels, maybe 9 total, and laid out in a 3x3 matrix you could move within the matrix depending on what you needed to improve, one way was harder (up and down as I recall) and right to left was tougher....so you could move up or down or at an angle to change properties.
Could have been that book, or maybe another one that explained how they pour the billets, then take sections from the billet before it is ever rolled and acid etch them to look for flaws, any flaws found will be present in bars rolled out from that billet. Fascinating reading.
With the old water hardening steels they used some really interesting controlled quench methods to get the hard skin and tough core we would get today with an air hardening steel like S7 with an ionitride treatment for a really hard surface.
