I use CAD X11, which is a free 2D draughting program (drafting for you Yanks)…. I bought a one-time $29 upgrade for it years ago that allows you to use "layers" in the drawing, but hardly ever use that.... All the drawings I have shown here on the GTA were done using it....

I started on Pro Engineer for several years at one job. Next job used Solid Works. Both expensive, but company paid for it. On my own now I love

Very powerful but I find the interface in Solid Works was simpler. But at 1/5 the cost, I will deal it. Free trial available as well as a less expensive hobbyist version. It used to come with a free license of

which is some amazing rendering software. Not sure if that is the case anymore.

Fusion 360 for me. I've recently purchased a paid subscription. But you can use it free for 3yrs as long as you business revenue is under 100k. It's a start up license I believe. It does 3D modeling, prints and CAM. It is also parametric so when you make a change to your model, it changes the print and CAM tool paths to bring everything together. Once you free term is up, it is fairly inexpensive. I've used it for quite a while and got a legacy deal of $300/yr as long as I don't let the subscription last. I think it's normally $495. Check it out. It's easy to learn and is compatible with solid works and several other softwares.

Engineering is the art of modeling materials we don't wholly understand, into shapes we can't precisely analyze, so as to withstand forces we can't properly asses, in such a way that the public has no reason to suspect the extent of our ignorance.

I recently found an article. If you join Experimental Aircraft Assoc for a year you get the latest version of personal version of Solidworks. If you use Solidworks at work then this a great deal!! Just trying to make that air rifle fly!!

Very nice!
The personal version must be new. I have seen the student version, but it was completely incompatible with regular SW.

A couple months ago I started using QCAD 2D CAD software and I'm pleased with it. The free version of QCAD reads/writes in the DXF format, however I paid for the "Pro version" that allows me to read/write in the AutoCad DWG format. QCAD can be downloaded for Windows, MacOS, and Linux and I'm currently using it on Linux Mint19. Funny thing is that even though I paid extra for the ability to read/write DWG files, so far I've found that the DXF format is perfectly suited for my drafting.
Here is a drawing of a "springer piston" I made for a "go by" in my garage workshop using QCAD.............
I also do wood working so I made a QCAD drawing of a fotball shaped serving tray. This drawing is printed full size and the print was attached to a plywood router guide for routing out the "bowls" in the tray...........
https://qcad.org/en/qcad-downloads-trial
https://qcad.org/en/products
A couple QCAD introduction videos.........
I loaded QCAD into Windows "just for grinns" and found it easier to load into Windows than Linux because there are a couple extra "LInux hoops" to jump through. I really don't like using Windows software so QCAD was removed from Windows and were jumped through the "hoops" Linux Mint operating system.
