Title: Wondering about making .22 gbb from airsoft....
Post by: my80chevette on July 17, 2013, 10:27:13 PM
I have wanted a semi auto or bolt action magazine fed pellet gun for awhile but of course such a thing seems to be rarer than hens teeth. I have played a bit of airsoft over the years and love the gas blow back "rifles" that some of the guys use. I have found that the magazines in these guns will feed .22 lead round ball and thought perhaps the smooth barrel could be removed and a custom rifled barrel could be fitted. I realize there may be other modifications needed but was trying to see if someone had attempted this or what you all thought of the idea. I was also noticed some manufacturers were bringing out shell ejecting airsoft guns and that sounded even better if it could be used.  ;D

Alright I did some more research on this idea over the last few days and found some interesting stuff. The majority of gbb rifles have a fps with .20 gram bbs in the 350-400 range and have a low 300fps range with a .25 gram bb. The .22 calibre lead round ball comes in at 15.43 grains which converts to .99985 grams. This means that there would have to be some tuning and upgrading to the airsoft guns before you could fire the lead ball ammo from it. The heaviest airsoft ammo comes in at .43 grams and I would imagine you would need 600fps at this weight just to get a reasonable fps with the 15.43 grain lead balls. I haven't found a lot of upgrades for the gbb gun I am interested in, a G&G CM16 GBB, but maybe another model by WE or KWA would have more upgradability especially since WE offers co2 magazines for some of their guns. Anyone else have any input or experience with these airsoft guns?

Well by intent they are limiting FPE...so nobody puts an eye out, or kills the cat ;-).

I suppose there are a LOT of ways to do that, but the simplest that comes to mind is using a very small plenum...that may not be terribly difficult to undo.

There is a semi auto BB pistol (Drozd possibly spelled wrong) that a lot of guys were modding to full auto.
