Life extended SCBA's are currently being used extensively in the fire fighting, first responder and PCP worlds. NIOSH is looking to make a position statement in regard to the use life extended SCBA's in NIOSH approved SCBA breathing air packs. These are the same carbon cylinder design(per DOT CFFC design Document) we buy for PCP applications. This is an interesting topic to read regarding carbon cylinders and is open to all to comment, see the below link (public comment closes at the end of November 2018):

Put a (www) in front of the above address. I guess I am a Newbie here and have not been granted the privilege to share links.

Mark the guy that fills my tanks was saying something about that extension the last time that I talked to him, I know that I was reading up on it last year and it's going to cost a bunch to get the tanks recertified (that was last year though), when I seen that I figured to heck with paying the big buck for recertification, I might just as well buy a new tank rather than go that route
Things might have changed since I read up on it though because Terry (my air supplier) said that he wasn't sure exactly what they're going to do about that right now.
I just signed for my F10 Shoebox that just came about 10 minutes ago so that's another reason I'm not too worried about it. Both of my SCBA tanks expired in Dec. 2019 and I doubt I'll be getting anymore especially since now I can fill them myself.

Yes, with anything new it will be at a premium to get started. I am sure over time the price comes down substantially as volumes increase and development costs decrease. Pyramyd Air is currently selling these life extended carbon fiber cylinders on their web page for PCP use.
Congrats on the new F10. If you are filling your own out of date/test vessels at home and using them at home, I guess you can do whatever you want with personal safety. Not sure who would knock on your door asking to see the date on your cylinders. I know what I would tell them if they asked me! But, if you decide to transport such a vessel in a car over the road to go to the range, hunting, plinking, etc. you move outside of personal safety to dealing with the safety of others. It then falls under DOT regulation. Ultimately it is the DOT that regulates the transport of all pressure vessels via air, rail and road in the USA.
In any case it is interesting seeing the developments.
