Better shot on this one

I shot a 8 ounce female cleanly through the brain a few minutes ago. I was about 25 yards away, it was up a tree, and only it's head and neck were visible. My dog saw it first and it moved partially behind the tree it was on when I opened the window. I saw the tail twirl around once and it dropped. It's my 9th with my 25 caliber P35.

Perfect placement, Jim; that's what we strive for! You are the very ACME of marksmanship with that P35.

Yes, I eat the squirrels and doves I shoot whenever possible. I couldn't find a dove initially and the dog found it the next day - I did not eat that one. But normally I clean them right away and store them in the freezer until I get ready to cook up a batch. Pretty tasty. Smaller ones seem to be more tender than older bigger ones.

Thanks guys.
The P35 got it's 10th squirrel a few minutes ago, a 9 ounce female. I've read the more mature females are probably pregnant right now and staying in or close to their dens. Maybe that's why I'm seeing the smaller ones. Cola (my dog) saw it first and started jumping around asking to go out. When I looked I did not see a squirrel but saw a dove - which I take too so I got the P35 out of the coffee table and loaded it. I shot from a GR window to my killing tree. That puts me a about 20 yards away where the gun shoots only about 1/4 inch low so I ignore the trajectory. It also gets me further from the quarry which seems to mean they stick around better. I was lining up a shot on the dove when I saw the squirrel and switched targets. This squirrel went to the back side of the tree but came back and took a pellet in the neck. The pellet went through the neck and then down the off side front leg coming out a little above the paw. I saw the blood spot on the leg but didn't anticipate the trajectory until I saw it cleaning her. She dropped immediately at contact and didn't even twitch.
Neck isn't as classic as brain but it drops them just as well, in my experience. Unless it takes an unusual path through the squirrel like this one did it also doesn't damage what I want to eat. Sorry for the recent "sink alone" pictures, I'll try and remember to get a shot in the yard next time. It is pretty cold here right now (30s) so I tend to get out and back in pretty quickly (but I don't move as fast as Cola).

I think a neck shot on a squirrel with a .25 would be considered ethical! Darn good shooting too!

Those little ones always have me on the fence as to whether it's worth it to clean them:
On the one hand, there's not much meat in them. On the other, what's there is more tender.
In your case, I'm sorry to say the dove would've made for better eating and been easier to clean.

The 4 oz one was much easier to skin than the bigger ones but the 8-9 oz seem nearly the same to pull the skin off. But there is less skin so I guess it's a little easier. The 4 oz was noticably more tender but there was very little meat to enjoy. I'll have to let you know on the 8-9 oz ones.
I think I like squirrels better than doves, however. I may be over cooking them. I put both into my instant pot and steam them for 30 minutes. The squirrels need that much time, the doves probably do not. The doves are not more tender than even the bigger squirrels cooked this way. Taste seems similar to me. I dip them in bbq sauce as I eat them so that's the main flavor. But both are good. I need to cook some more soon, I shot another dove and squirrel today.
