What is up with the GTA ?

  Has been talk of all new software  but   would also be a different feel thus atmosphere , now whether that would be good or bad thing is if that happens it will stay  want be going back.  New generation are a different folk surely not like us old members.  The library is still there although outdated but still useful information, at the rate airguns are progressing it would take a full time person to try to keep up .  I wish 70 again , yip your right lots of springers  just a rifle and a tin of pellets no tanks or hoses pumps,  thing is tanks pumps are more affordable now was a time where you needed 2 jobs to support a pcp. There are still lots of die hard  spring guys out there i get mine out and shoot, still have a couple magnums  about 5 shots and im done with them.  David

And that right there is part of the reason some of the "good old boys" don't participate as much anymore.

I just want to expand a bit on what Rocker1 said...
Then main issue to going down the path of new forum software is migrating existing data from the old software.
So along with sniffing out something that is affordable, good customer support and not having to learn to fly the space shuttle to navigate, we also need to be able to move what we have to it without losing anything.
Even with all that.. just imagine what it's going to take for someone to perform those tasks.

I joined in 2018 but have only been actively lurking for the last 6 months or so.
I find the forum software lacking and frustrating at times, maybe it's just because it's not like other forums I frequent.
Even the term "gate" seemed odd to me at first; I wasn't sure exactly what it meant.  Now I know it's just another word for "forum".
I miss the "like" button that other forums have.

I've learned from this forum, recently purchased a CS3 compressor because of discussions on here and I'm very happy with it.

The difference in format between this forum and social media as well as other forums is important to me.  The writing is what matters.  I like the gates.  They keep social media vibes out and writing in.

Perhaps these are "old ways" but they are to my taste. I do not use other forums and have never been on social media nor to I ever intend to.

I value the patient quality of some of the authors here.  I believe, right or wrong, that the format of the forum has something to do with that.

I never was aware of the rating option before.  Once I sort of figure my way around to do what is most important to me, I guess I don't feel the need for exploration.

 We had the like button but seemed some couldn't play right in the sand box always a fuss feud over who gave some one a negative response actually a shame grown people cant stand anything negative towards them so like button went away. and especially on friday nite with Jim beam or George Dickel, then for sure some one was going off the deep end. believe me after almost 16years on here i have seen a lot.  David

I agree with all your comments. I think not resorting to Like icons etc means the poster is more likely to explain the reasoning for choosing that icon. At bare minimum, even a few words can reduce misunderstandings. The icons sometimes turn into a Revengefest, which I've seen on two other forums (one of them AG related).

A forum's goal is communication. If tallying simple likes and dislikes is the goal, the polls do that.

Internet comments already strip away many contextual and social clues to a commenter's intent, which emoticons help but don't always fully illustrate. Like/Dislike strips away even more context. They basically encourage Us vs Them attitude.

Guess that's the bigger disappointment of the times we're in, Folks by in large are no longer willing to get there hands dirty and use there minds in figuring stuff out.
It appears for so many that "I ask .. You tell" is there idea of having an active part within a specialized forum such as the GTA.

Yes, I agree but in all fairness I think there is a huge knowledge gulf between the experts and the average hacker like me.   A lot of people are unsure of their knowledge and less willing to talk about technical details.  As much as I enjoy tinkering with my airguns, it takes a lot of time to gain much useful insight.

That is a respectable response and I for one absolutely get that and not wanting to sound as if taking the high road.
Enthusiast, Professional or *Hack  ( * I jest there ) the reason for being on the forums is either to learn, which can be in depth or rudimentary, or sharing what you know or think you know open to have a conversation about it. i
The past had MANY deep thinkers and doers with many rather deep conversations, arguments & head butting etc as ideas were shared some got after / went after it further moving the conversation or R&D along.

Those who found them self's not really able to follow along enough to engage in any said thread, sure as the days go light & dark they got an education if willing to put forth the thought & effort in understanding it.

This is where I personally am coming from ... missing the days and people that shared these wonderful years of Discovery, Open experimentation, R&D with other willing like minded air gunners.

Learning is always too late when learning from experience. There's an innocence in that the first time around. I appreciate the guilty parties who put time in here to help the rest of us learn forward.
