So I'm home tending to feeders, checking the trap and drooling over squirrels in other peoples yards. I hear the woodpeckers over the house. I shot up some starlings last week for bothering these woodpeckers, but I haven't been able to tell that the woodpeckers are going to settle in up there--they seem to be flying elsewhere from this tree. However, on one of my passes under the tree, I hear what sounds like the woodpecker, but something isn't quite the same. It's raspy and faster paced...curious, I look up and there's a black bird! Binocs up: yellow beak!!This one is cooperative and stays put while I grab the R10 and line up a shot from the back stoop. It is a very high angle and about 20 yards, so I hold under a bit and nail it right through the body, breaking a wing. It spirals to the ground and flaps once or twice before expiring. A quick search online confirms that starlings can mimic. I've learned something new--and good to know too. The cat in the picture was just snooping. He doesn't eat hunting hand-outs. He loves to catch voles, but the only thing that gets him excited is people fixing food in the kitchen.
