Dear Andrew,
Chrono Connect Mobile review, 2016-01-24
Chrono Connect Mobile Lite, 1.06, 2013-03-04
Chrono Connect Mobile Pro, 1.01, 2012-07-15 - Why is this 8 months older than the Lite version?
I guess with release dates so old, it is no surprise that there is no reply to emails. I see the same questions posted on various fora, so I surmise that that we are all in the same boat.
The website is dismal. It's a good bet that this is not an active product, except as an income stream for the vendor. In fact, it is not clear that the vendor is the one who created the product. That means that its failings are not likely to be corrected...that is, this is a "dead" product, and will work until some OS upgrade obsoletes it. It's sad that so much good effort is put into such useful apps, and then they die. I think the market is there in a big way for an app such as this, and if the failings were fixed, and subsequent reviews posted, sales would be at least 10X their level.
That being said, here are my notes, comments, and tips.
It seems to work, but I have not checked it against another chrono...I'm an amateur (Beeman P1 for 20 years; P3 and P17, in recent years). I shoot 10 m. I don't need dead nuts accuracy, because I am simply someone who enjoys target shooting.
For example, I am getting
Beeman P3: Beeman Wadcutter Coated 1235 4.5mm 7.7 gr 121/+-1 m/s 3.7 J using homemade wood pellet seating tool (397 fps)
This seems reasonable. (Seating the pellets a few mm gets me about +4 m/s.)
I was careful to measure all distances to the nearest 5 mm, but of course shooting offhand means some variation in the muzzle to device distance. The author recommends 1 m device-to-muzzle, but I use ~3 m, which minimizes the impact of that variation.
I find the sound bar "backwards" from my expectations. It says "soft amb volume" on the right and "very loud" on the left. I guess that means that if I am in a noisy environment, it should be to the left?
I was getting too many errors, until I gambled and moved the sound level setting to mid range (from its default on the right). It seems that this signals a noisier background, causing CCM to raise the noise floor for deciding that a projectile was fired and hit the target. This adjustment dramatically reduced the number of errors.
Does it calculate the energy at the muzzle or the target?
Does it calculate the speed at the muzzle or the target?
Well, the web sites say "the speed of pellets leaving your air gun, rifle, pistol and display the speed and power for you in your chosen speed and power units, in a list of shots, and even in a graph!" Not very good English, but the intent seems clear: values apply at the muzzle, leaving the shooter to figure out the final velocity and energy, which would be useful.
To access the menu on my Samsung Note 4, I <hold> the "recent apps" soft button, and the menu appears. It seems that this is because there used to be a hardware menu button for apps, and it is no longer included on many devices. This app should be updated to use the new ... menu method.
How do I save strings to desktop for editing? I've searched the phone for the data, and no joy. I can't copy the data. I can't send it to another app.
The "LCD" font is not very readable for small fonts, such as m/s. Why not just use a regular font?
There are some display sync problems that I sent in using the on line form. They involve updating (or trying to update) my personal info, such as airgun make, model, etc., along with pellets, and seeing that immediately reflected in the UI. Didn't happen for me.
Those two other screens are not useful to me. I can't read all the column titles on the shot list, and I can't rotate|zoom|move to wide screen so that I can see them. The graph is missing tick marks and labels, so that is useless, too.
Quitting CCM does not actually close it. I must close it otherwise. It does seem to reset the shot string, but so does New String.
I thought that if I opened a string, I could see it on the shot page and graph, but it does not appear, even though I can edit in the string manager. I must press Continue String to see my summary results on the main page.
CCMP recorded a bunch of bad shots, because I forgot that it was running, and was messing around. I wanted to delete the bad shots, but it is tedious: selecting a shot, deleting, hitting Yes, then doing it all again for the next shot. And then the shot manager goes back to the top of the list, not where I was editing, so I must then scroll to the next bad record. You can see how much time all this takes just to delete a shot or two...or 20, in my case.
The green dot on the Saved Strings list indicates the "currently selected" string, but you must still "select" it to view and use it.
It seems to disable the auto off feature of my phone, which I guess makes sense, because I want to shoot for several minutes, and not repeatedly turn my phone on.
It would be nice if all these questions got to the FAQ page (it would be so easy), for others' use...but if there is no one home to answer the emails and forum posts, then we won't get answers, and potential new users will have the same questions.
It's not expensive, but it is so handicapped by implementation flaws that it is not easy to recommend it. The value in the Pro version over the Lite is that you are likely to be able to enter several gun and pellet data records, and use them in the future, whereas the Lite version does not permit that. It does seem to check for a "license" and "updates", but I can't say that I see any result from this.
And in closing, the sales page should point to a few of the largest air gun fora for newbies. Folks new to CCM are not gonna get the help they need from putting reviews on the sales page, there are many frustrated inquiries, and if the author is not going to support the product at even the minimum level, any support is likely to come from forums.

Wondering if anyone can comment on accuracy of the "Chrono Connect" Android app versus an actual chronograph? Or suggest a way to calibrate the software chrono?
Appears to provide readings as expected but no real way to determine if numbers are accurate...

A couple of years ago I tried the free app, i liked it, and bought the pro version for phone/iPad.
A friend loaned me a pro chrono digital, I set the iPhone on the chronograph, and adjusted the distance settings of the app until the app velocities matched the chronograph velocities.
(Hint, use an external microphone as it tends to be more sensitive than the built in microphone.)
Then I marked the patio with spray paint as to where to stand, put the phone, and the target so I could repeat the setup.
It was close enough and consistent enough for the average user.
I like the ways it displays and outputs.
I wish it would accept inputs from other chronos to the headphone jack so they could be displayed with the app features.
If you have a quiet gun with a TKO, it doesn't work, too quiet to start the clock.
Use a steel stop plate to make a loud enough report to stop the clock.
I eventually bought a Caldwell chronograph that outputs to my phone, and love it.
But when I want a fast ballpark number and not set up any equipment, I would throw the phone in the black square on the patio, stand on the black line, and shoot my target.

I make 2 predictions;
ON THE DATE WHEN US TROOPS ARE ISSUED AN Energy Pulse Weapon,
1. The US Soldier will have on his person a version of the Colt 1911.
2. He will be aiming the NEW Weapon at someone carrying an AK47.

I am going to see if I can find someone with a physical chrono, and compare. However, that seems of limited use, because we don't know when an update to Android or iOS will kill this. I have tried to contact the listed author. My emails don't bounce, but I get no replies. I tried partnering with another developer, but after a few small changes, he dropped from sight. I'd like to work with someone to develop an app that can be used into the future. I have professional software development experience, but none for Android or iOS. I am looking for someone with the requisite background, and I have already begun to learn to develop Android apps. Though this looks simple, there is a lot under the hood, from interfacing with the phone mic to the math | physics that makes it all happen. I have the hardware and physics background to do the work. Seems a shame to waste the work already done, but no reply = dead app. I had hoped that the author would reply with something, even if that was that he'd no longer dev the app. I recommend to anyone that they might as well use the free version as a rough tool, but not invest in the "pro" version, for the reasons listed earlier. The app web page has been updated with "Chrono Connect v2.0 2016", but I saw no evidence of what, if anything, had been changed | updated. and the app versions are still from 4 years ago.
