Title: It's hunting - well, sorta
Post by: Bicycleman on December 06, 2018, 11:04:31 AM
During the 45 years we lived in our Louisiana house, I caught two mice in the house.
I have caught two mice here - so far - in two days.  Technically, they were not inside, but rather on the screened-in porch.  They were after the Doves' feed, but fell to creamy peanut butter.  The one below is #2.

Good job.

Found one yesterday resting dead stiff right in front of my uncle's recliner. I've never seen one die out in the open like that before. Looked like it was just resting there watching us. :o

The rural school where I taught was located on the edge of town in a large field.  Mice would regularly invade the school looking for food/candy the teachers and students would leave in the classrooms.  Once, one of the little critters ran out into the middle of the classroom and dropped dead!  I had my back to it at the time; but several students saw what happened and brought it to my attention.  Things like that made for an interesting teaching environment.

Cool story Mike. Makes me wonder if the critters just get scared enough from seeing people sometimes that they have heart attacks.

Mike, way to go! Rodents make quite a mess and carry who knows what kind of issues! I’ve got their bigger cousins around here...rattus, but I’ve never seen mice around the house although I know they’re around because I’ve seen them at the golf course just a mile away.

HA HA Tom - Good reply.

Gil, it could have been a heart attack if that mouse took a look at that BIG football player sitting on the first row of the class.  Hee hee

Randall, that probably won't be the last one.  It had been cannibalized by one of its hungry friends.  This story may have more chapters!

Marcos, that is a thought to consider.
However, the mouse in my classroom was REALLY dead.
And then there --->  it took a look at that BIG football player sitting on the first row and really did die of fright.   ;D

Thanks, Dave.  One big problem with these critters - the drumsticks are so small, they get caught in my teeth.   :o
Seriously:  I put the body on top of the back fence hoping a hawk would take it.  I even left it over night thinking maybe an owl would benefit.  No takers when morning came.   :(

Okay, this is getting ridiculous - #3 this morning and there is at least one more.  This one didn't get a chance at much of the peanut butter; but the peanut butter was all gone and the critter back was peeled back and gnawed on.  My Judy advised that I set two traps tonight.  Hey, that my peanut butter those critters are lapping up.   >:(   This is getting expensive!  Hee hee
Words of advice:  If you are thinking about moving to a newly developed area, buy some mouse/rat traps.  (Three years ago, this was all woodland or agricultural fields.)

Critters gotta get dealt with. Good work!

You are correct, Wolfy.  I would rather shoot them - but shooting is illegal in the city where I live.
Thanks for looking in.

The one at my uncle's home was in full rigor so no playing dead with that one. Cute vid though.

If running out of your PB might consider glue traps. They also catch dirt daubers and birds if you have a problem with them too.

Yes, Gil, I know the glue traps work well.  Those were used at the workers at the school where I taught.  My Judy just bought a pack of four spring taps; and I have two huge jars of peanut butter.  If I run out of peanut butter, the exterminator will get a call for HELP! :D

I have a 26lbs cat that is built like a linebacker that I could loan you. He is a real sportsman when it comes to mice. They dont live long around him, when he gets to playing around it sounds like someone is trying to kick in the front door.

Send him over - they are trying to gang up on me.  So far, I am holding my own.  But who knows how many there will be tonight!

Right on Mike!

Paulus I'd like to see a picture of that bruiser. Sounds like a keeper you have there. Mine got up around that weight too. He was a trip. The other day when I took the stray to the vet I told her this one is tough just like the last one I had that was put down 3yrs ago and she instantly said I don't think any cat is as tough as he was. He gave them all kinds of hades back when they had to do anything with him so she remembers him very well. hehe

Say Mike.........is your place in Murfreesboro, Tennessee going to be hit with this Winter Storm...Diego ?

The Weather Channel in talking a full 10 inches or more of wet heavy snow is some places.   Wow !

I sure hope this misses your place !

Mike, you probably have a nest somewhere around the house if you have killed that many. I use chipmunk size box traps to get rid of the difficult rodents when the spring traps don't work anymore. You can still use the peanut butter to bait the box traps with. I use the 1377 to terminate them while they are in the trap.

Tom, I don't know about snow but the rain is our biggest headache around here right now, it has soften the ground along with high winds that come with fronts is causing more trees to come down on everything around here. We still have a lot of leaners over the highways right now and night time driving has become dangerous during the storms. I still have standing water from the last storm.

I just watched the local news - It looks like most of the snow will be north and east of us.  The prediction is about 1/4 inch (.25) here.  But it won't accumulate since the temperatures are above freezing.  In this area, it is often "Black Ice" that causes most injuries and property damage.
Tom, I sure thank you for your concern.  Unlike you, we don't know how to handle snow.  Yes, we are in Tennessee.  But one must remember we are recently here (about a year now.)  So, any snow will cause us to stay inside until the roads and skies are clear.   ;)

EDIT:  I almost forgot to mention that all three of our vehicle are 2-wheel drive with Louisiana "All Season" tires.

Nice job repelling the mouse invasion Mike!  Be on your toes.  That could have been a reconnaissance team and the army is not far behind :)

Mike....you DO have a lot of mice.     There are a lot of field mice in my area too.   I bought electronic repellers 20 years ago and have not seen any in the house since.      I see their tracks outside in the snow during winter months.  I put Decon cubes out side under heavy flower pots to keep the numbers down.  They burrow under the flower pots and get the Decon but nothing else can or does. The mechanical traps don't work for me in winter.....all covered with ice and snow.

Best Wishes - Tom

Good morning, Tom.
My Judy has the electric repellers all over the house.  We have never seen any animals inside.
Those I am catching are inside the screen porch - plenty of entry points.  At first they were after the wild bird feed.  Now it is out of their reach and has been replaced with peanut butter.  The peanut butter is "to die for".   ;D

Keep after them Mike.  Your doing great!  You get enough of them they will end the siege of your home and go to someone else's ;D

Good morning, Harry.    ^^ That must be what happened.
I just checked the traps a few minutes ago.  Both were empty.
So, the pictures you don't see, are the mice I didn't catch this morning.  Hee hee
This thread may take a little vacation.  Thanks for following along.

Well, Harry, your voice of wisdom was right - as always.  It has been over a week now, and still no new kills at the traps.   8)
