Virtually all the other major manufacturers use barrels that open out after a short bore constriction, so the pellet doesn't drag.

The Quest 1000...I've reduced the power on a couple of springers. I found a couple things. It might be coincidence, but in the rifle where I removed all of the preload PLUS a bit more? The spring needs to rest for a few seconds between shots. If you fire it one after the other, the fps drops, incrementally, and you end up more than 30 fps slower. But spacing out the shots with a few extra seconds (vs repeated shooting pellets through a chrono), the fps stays up. I mean, even if you leave it cocked for 20 minutes, the shot comes out full speed; it's only when you repeat fire it in close succession the fps drops.I would also warn you to check your barrel. I have a Crosman springer, and the barrel isn't constricted/choked. The pellet drags all the way down the bore. Virtually all the other major manufacturers use barrels that open out after a short bore constriction, so the pellet doesn't drag. If you reduce the velocity of a rifle with a uniform bore too much, you will likely ruin the accuracy. Maybe Crosman is using proper airgun barrels, now. But I would check before I cut down the spring.

...997. That was a real surprise. That number is 'almost' seductive enough to make me leave it alone... But it's still obnoxious.
