an dialed it in. 3-9 X 40
Little too much scope for this gun, but just weight-wise. The 6 power is actually perfect.....keeps 10 yds just below too much, but still reaches out to 35 yds well.
That is right, 35 yds. I punched a hole in a top of an olive-jar top. Used the b-25 .22 up close to make a nice neat hole. Same with some beer-bottle tops I found up in the parking lot....NO I don't drink....but when I saw the litter to pick up, I thought, these would make great mini snipe targets.
Lasered the closest dogwood tree, and set the bottle tops at 25 yds.
The metal olive jar top, 35 yds.
Used 7 grain Diabolo Basics. Hit the bottle top first try (and every subsequent try) with 1st southern mil-dot setting on the bottom of the tops outline. DEEP dent. Wow. 2nd try, almost same spot, deep dent. 3rd try, the head flattened and punched thru.
Lots of drop from 25 to 35 yds. Figured it was 2 mil-dots. But still, first hit, deep dent. 2nd shot, tore thru.
This is surprising power out to 35 yds from this cheap, SSP gun.
IF I were someone who had around 30yds of property or less to shoot on, and I wanted something that could punch paper accurately, has a quiet shot cycle, and out to 30 yds has enough power for starling control (heck, might do a rabbit) ....then the 953 would fit the bill for me. Can be had for ~ 120 bucks I think, now. VERY accurate with a scope, and a simple rebuild kit costs around 8 bucks I think.
This gun is a very overlooked gun, I think. They sure are fun. It was so accurate today, that I might start trying HARD stuff, like trying to cut a playing card in half at 10 -15 yds.
Fun gun for sure.
Ya'll have a blessed weekend,

They are a nice gun. I have the 853 with a 6x32 centerpoint on mine. Mine likes the 8.3 gr techforce domes. Last year I took it to deer camp to show the guys know accurate they are. I have a rubber stamp of a common house fly so I made up some fly targets an set them out at 25 yd,s thats what I sighted in for. I took the first shoot an nail the fly dead center . Let my father inlaw shoot it. His first shot he looks at me an says I didn,t kill it like you did but I took out the right wing. The body of the fly is a 1/4 wide an with the wings it,s only a 1/2 inch. Fun little guns.

Daisy 953.
This is Daisy's low end targeteer. Some folks say they feel cheap, and there is alot of plastic. This is no different than other Daisy's this day and age, though.
You can get the 853's refurbed thru the CMP for around 100 bucks, I think. LW barrels. Wood stock. I was looking at the 853/953s, and got the 953 from a YF member cause it was a good price. Plus, I WILL shoot in the rain, etc....so the synthetic kind of appealed to me. Have tried a power mod, but didnt use the right epoxy, and it eventually migrated to the valve seal. Rebuild kit was 8 bucks. So now the piston is back stock (for now) and I have polished all trigger parts, but really need to attempt the 953 trigger mod to get pull weight/length down to a manageable pull.
The 953 does NOT have the LW barrel, but I can't imagine that it gives up anything at 30 yds.....it is very precise. I need to chrony the thing and see what its doing....but I bet the power mod redone correctly, think its supposed to yeild 35-50 more fps.....This thing would be the ultimate suburban pester. NOT for possum, coon type stuff. But rabbits/birds at 30, and probably squirrels at around 25, where it starts to drop off. What it lacks in just a little more power---it makes up with "eye-socket" accuracy at 25yds. This is scoped of course, my eyes dont allow open sighted shots like that....
Look up the Daisy 953 Zrod......fun gun.
God bless,

What kind of power can you expect from this with a power mod, and how much do the parts cost? I pretty much won't purchasecan air gun unless it has potential as at least a rabbit or squirrel gun. Pretty much every air rifle we have, for the kids or myself, is a hunter!

Well, I can give you "redneck" guestimation, W/O numbers....till I can get you some back at stock numbers......
It DID NOT punch thru the bottle cap first time...but a bottle cap is actually quite strong. At 25, it DID rip thru the olive can lid, which is steel, but you can "flex" those with your finger tip if you push hard enough.
I have heard the mod (where basically, you fill in the piston head till its flush, with epoxy, or I guess you could put an aluminum disk secured by a screw, etc...) and this is rumored to give some 35-50 fps extra. They are rated right at 500, I think. SO....if the mod does in fact give 50 fps.....with 7 grain I would say somewhere in the neighbor hoood of 4.5 ftlbs is achieved at the muzzle. Low power I know....but again, close yardage and precise shooting could make good friends here.
Rabbits are notoriously soft. Squirrels are tough. Squirrel in close confines, probably no more than 25 yds might be doable. B-12 or R7 might be a little higher on the power totem-pole, if it has to hunt. B-12 is also in the price range.
I have a soft spot for pump guns though....ssp, 3 stroke, and msp.
In my growing experience, I feel I have been a little hoodwinked into believing the spring piston gun design is superior to my good old pumpers. Sure they take more effort, but with much the same tuning work, they put out respectable power (unless of course, you are talking Mac-1 STERIODS, then its BIG power)
But I am down to a spring rifle and pistol.
The other rifles are the Daisy 953 for fun and short range work, a Crosman 101 that is about a 9-10 ftlb gun, that is older than I am by a good bit, and a Steroid benji for serious hunting.
Once you figure out what orings and springs work in your pumper, you can usually have 3-4 rebuild kits for the price of 1 spring gun material tune kit.
I would say though, 35 yds is streching it for any type of hunting with this gun. Just drops too rapidly past 25 really.
Thats why its a suburban sniper. R7 will do this and more, but at around 200 biscuits more.
God bless,

Is the daisy 953 a multi-pump or single pump ? I found a bunch of pics of it, looks like the typical daisy pumper, but you guys say they are accurate hu ? Does it come in .22 cal. ?

Single stroke pump, not at all hard to pump. That is why so fun.
From the size of that weight, and the wood stock, you are looking at an 853 of some kind there, I suspect. Best place to go is Pyramyds site.
They are VERY accurate with a scope. The trigger leaves something to be desired.
Look at Gaylords review of this one, and google some other stuff about it. Most negativity is preference based, some dont like the materials, etc.....but gotta say...accuracy is there.
Since in that new, 8-10 dollar kit, they sent a new sear, Im gonna try the mod soon. Supposed to be a tremendous help. I think a good smooth, light trigger is paramount with these low vel guns.
They are fun for sure. Once you are used to it, and have it ironed out like typical other (sub 300 guns) you can punch the X ring out at 15 and 20, consistantly. that gets boring, hence the idea of cutting cards, etc.....for a challenge.
God bless, and wishing you some trigger time this weekend.

Be careful farmer... those little accurate target rifles can really get under your skin...lol. I had a 953 and loved every single shot. In my opinion the 3-9 is a decent choice if you use it for shooting pass 25 yards. i started minisniping (minisniping.com) with that gun and then moved on to a 753, then my first 300s and now on to my second one... It should be illegal to be this fun...
shooting this gun at 35 plus yards brings a lot in common with full bore long range shooting. I am now shooting .22 rimfire casings at 40 with the 300s, but i am sure that the 953 could shoot that far too. play with pellets... the obvious choices do not necessarily work for the x53 series. Shooting a heavier pellet with more mil dots sometimes is better when"stretching out " that far. They become more predictable (drop is a predictable, wind is not).
I ran wind flags out to 50 yards for shooting that and let me tell you... wind can change from the muzzle out to 35 yards. I do not think that the 953 came out in .22, but something tells me i am wrong (the 922 perhaps?). I am sure the higher end guns are not available in anything but .177. If I remeber mine shot the JSB Rs 7.33gr at 510 (real 510ish), but loved the meisterkulgen 8.2 and superdomes 8.3 (about 460ish). The domes worked better pass 30 yards... But the 8.2s were brutal on starlings...lol.
Those guns are airgunning best kept secret. I only moved to the 300s because with a tune mine shoots in the 650s with jsb 8.4, and that helps a lot at long range. shotgun shells at 50 yards are the norm... If you never tried minisniping, go to the website... you'll thank me later (and the curse me out for creating the need for better/rarer target guns...).
PS. I am looking for a walther LGV next... i think i can eek out more accuracy out of the pneumatic gun... or maybe a crosman challenger...mmmmh...

oh yeah... no power mods to them... it just ruins the consistency. its a target rifle for chissake...lol. Now the trigger, that is a completely different story. It changes the gun. Stock you are pulling every shot, even if you can see it (you'll see it at 30 yards). after the mod your score soars...

I just like to add the 953 has a 5 shot clip and a single stage trigger even after trigger mod. It is the lower end target rifle to the 853 which is used in Junior target competitions. Mine might need a tune because I can see the pellet moving down range at 20 yrds. Had lubed my pellets to reduce vertical inaccuracy. Those pellet may be to tight a fit not sure being I don't have a chrony. Also has a very short butt to trigger length. I did a butt extension. Fun to shoot.

A few observations regarding the x53 Daisys---------
I've owned and enjoyed an 853 for over 20 years IIRC. I've upgraded both trigger and stock as I found the parts. Have one of the Full Monte adjustable Walnut target stocks that Numrich Arms offered several years ago as a 2nd waiting in the wings for me to get inspired to finish it out.
The plastic-stocked 850 progenitor of the series was spookily accurate with the Daisy barrel. The 753 & 853 with the Lothar Walther barrels and a good trigger mod challenge full-blown Olympic grade rifles in pure accuracy for amateurs like myself. A friend brought his newly acquired FWB M-70 by today for me to try out. What a marvel! Yet I've shot better groups with my 853.
I have---apparently---the only inaccurate R-7 & Daisy 953 on the planet. Being born on the 13th might be a contributing factor.
Consider this----accuracy is ALWAYS luck-of-the-draw. When you luck into an unusually accurate gun HANG ONTO IT! Tom

Had a 953 but it wasn't for me, so I sold it. Used, they go for around $90, shipped. Then I found a 753 on CraigsList. Actually belonged to a member of my club who was graduating to real guns - as in You're In The Army, Now - and his Dad sold it to me. Then I came across a good deal on another 953 and popped for it. They are nice to shoot and my 953 has the Pilkington trigger mod. (The 753 does not, but I'll get around to it.) As to quality, well, to be fair, there is not a whole lot of difference between the 753 and 953. Yes, the 753 has the LW barrel but the stock profiles are the same and the receiver looks to be, also. The 753 came with the Gamo rear diopter sight (it is a target rifle, after all) and a better front globe sight. You can upgrade a 953 with a similar set of sights for not a lot from PA. The 953 shares the 853C's five shot magazine which is handy. I find the single loading to be a bit hard for these old eyes and fingers. Mostly, a 953 is a great basement gun and fun in the yard, too. It's about as a accurate at ten yards as you can hope to be. What's not to like?

For target shooting, I prefer the stock of the 953 over the 853. The 953 stock is shaped better for off-hand shooting and it is heavier.
I have to work on the trigger to smoothen the pull a bit more, it is still a bit rough. And reduce the trigger weight a bit.
