The field target club I occasionally shoot is located in Damascus, MD about 140 miles and 2.5 hours from Richmond, VA which is about the same distance I travel to get to a THAGC match in Mt Pleasant, NC from my home in Rougemont, NC.

I intend to shoot the last match of the season at DIFTA in Damascus, MD on Dec 14th. Here are a couple links where you can find the "Adult Air Rifle Program".........

I'm also in Chesterfield near Courthouse/Hull intersection.

I have a place where I can host in Doswell.  15+ acres shooting downhill at approx 100 yards.  We could maybe meet up since we're all fairly close and drive out there.  I normally shoot real guns there so shooting air rifles won't be a problem.

Just to introduce myself since I'm uber new...I'm Jason and I'm very new to air rifles.  I have two Ruger springers in .177 and a Gamo CFR, also in .177, with CDT gold trigger and Leapers 3-9x40 scope.  I've also got three .22LR's for plinking; Henry lever action, heavily modded Ruger 10/22, and a Winchester bolt action.  I'm looking to make a pcp air rifle purchase in .22 very soon.

Welcome to Richmond. Punkguy. We have a few guys here. I have only shot with two of them though. We should definitely set up some type of gathering in the near future. The biggest issued would be to find someone with land that can accommodate a group. My house is limited and have to be careful with the neighbors.

What guns do you have? I have a Custom disco .22 and and srod .25.

you should be able to pick up a scuba tank for 100 to 150 and you will need a fill adaptor which I would recommend a ninja one which will run you about 50 to 60 more

Have you looked into meeting at a WMA shooting range?
Search the VDGIF website for shooting ranges &/or WMA

Find one convenient for all & Google Earth or Bing Map it's location to see what the geography is like.
Set up close to the parking area (or right off it).  Might not be ideal but it is legal & now that hunting season is over not as crowded.

Just an idea. Private property is hard to come by, but I used to hunt a place near Chancellorsville owned by a pulpwood company. I think it was Gladfelters & they charged $10 season for a pass.
Good luck

Hey guys... Iv just sent an email to the VA game and fisheries dept , briefly asking if they had or know of anywhere a few adult air gunners can go and shoot some targets . I guess its a shot in the dark ( no pun intended :-) ) It does say on there web site that due to a lot of queries it could take them up to five days to reply. If they do at all , so keep your fingers crossed guys and Ill keep you posted .

Hi all, just found this thread, and fairly new here. I might be able to get a place, we might have to trade some labor for use of the property / range. There is a burm, but no defined line as of yet. If this sounds even reasonable, I'll reach out to my father in law, and see if he would trade some of our labor as he is putting a cabin together for range time. The property is about 35 minutes from Hull and Winterpock. I'm just down Winterpock, but I can only host maybe two or three once cleared with the better half, and we would be limited to 40 - 42 yards.

Reviving this post as it is a few months old...

I just got on this forum and am looking around. I am new to air guns, but have been messing around with Gamo Hornet for about 6 months.

I would to take part in a gathering. Here is a thought, but I need someone to chime in with experience/knowledge...

I am the executive director of a private school with 33 acres in Chesterfield County. We have an athletic field complex that is very open and would allow shots of 150 yards or maybe more. There is also about 5-6 acres of woods with a few trails.

My question is, does anyone know the legality of shooting air guns on private school property? Virginia Code refers to firearms ("expel a projectile by action of an explosion of a combustible material") but not necessarily air guns (§ 18.2-308.1)

tjcib,

Welcome to to forum. I noticed your other post also. I have little experience with Springers but I would be happy to help out in any way.

The laws in Virginia regarding Air Guns are. That you can shot in any private proper with the owner permission. You have to make sure that you don't shot to another person proper but that is OK also as long as you have their permission.

Quote
In Virginia the law authorizes a locality to restrict the use of air guns in heavily populated areas where doing so would be dangerous to the citizens. A parent or guardian must supervise a child below the age of sixteen using an air gun. Minors above the age of sixteen need written permission to use an air gun in any place designated for that use by local authorities. However, there are no ordinances prohibiting the firing of an air gun at approved firing ranges, property where firearms can be discharged, or private property so long as the projectiles don’t cross property boundaries.

The only county that I know of that does not allow air gun in private properties is fairfax county but that might have changed.

I live in Bon Air. All my air guns are PCPs and you are welcome to shot them any time.

Regarding the school. If would would like to shot there or have some people shot there. It would be beneficial to have written permission from the school allowing them to shot on the property and I would also recommend a waiver from each person shooting that if anything happens the school does not have any responsibility.

Daniel

This sounds great, I have been working on getting our place in order, but it's 35 miles across the Amelia line from Chesterfield, if your heading out Hull St. I would be up for meeting with some of the locals, and once the family place is in order I could host 5 - 8 people, the 100 yard range is still under construction, and the shack for that will accommodate maybe 3 people at a time once it's finished. However, for everything else up to around 75 yards, we can just setup a couple of tables and the berm is already in place. Right now just kinda busy trying to get the outside of the cabin finished, so when hunting season opens up, will have a place to stay for a couple of days. Also have a 4-H state shoot I'm helping to train the Chesterfield club kids for, so I'm kinda booked for a bit. Oh there was another thing I wanted to throw out to the local guys on here, we can always use another coach for the 4-H shooting team, getting certified is not difficult, so if anyone is interested, let me know. This also applies if you have kids from 9-19 that want to participate.  TJCIB, please let us know if and when you can host, I'm happy to sign a release, I know how the liability issue are.

Okay everyone. I am ready to set something up for a weekend. We are clear to use my school's property (private school). It has athletic fields that have plenty of space, we could easily set up out to 150 yards (since we have a football field and more).

I'm never really shot anywhere except my back yard, so I don't know what all is needed as far as accommodations. We could shoot toward the woods, but that would have our table away from any structures. We could shoot towards a hill that marks the property line, that way we could hang out by the concession stand and have a fridge, electricity, and whatever else we need...

I'm up for doing it in October. Pretty much any weekend works, any time of day Saturday, or Sunday afternoons.

As a disclaimer, my "hidden" motive in this is to try out some of you guys' gear to see what my next purchase will be. I noticed someone in town has a Galatian QE...hoping he comes =)

I have put the time at October 18 from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM. End time is a soft time, could be sooner or later depending on everyone's needs. Address of location is on the signup page link.

Would it be OK to bring one of our 4-H juniors to try out maybe a Challenger and if someone has an AR-20 for feel and weight? His father is looking into purchasing a better rifle for the young man.
Thanks guys,

rualert,

I think the AR-20 might be heavy for a Juniors. It is a fairly heavy gun. Have them look at the MPR M10 version. https://www.pyramydair.com/product/air-arms-s400-sidelever?m=1407 (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/air-arms-s400-sidelever?m=1407) It will be much lighter. I'll have my MRP FT. It will be heavy for M10 with the scope and other items but I will give them a good comparison. The AR-10 is much heavier than my MPR.

Thank you for the response, I kind thought the AR-20 might be on the heavy side, so it would be nice if he could get a feel for the other rifle. I appreciate any input you guys have, we are a growing team, just started this year, so any and all tips are greatlt appreciated.

This is the first time I've ever been to a group shoot, let alone host one. What all do I need to have there in regards to targets? Do people bring their own? I can pick up a bunch of paper targets, just need to know the size/type.

Can someone paint a picture of the day for me, so I know what I need to do as host to make it happen...

I think everyone should bring some targets to shot at and something to stand them. Also, people should bring a shooting table. I'm almost positive that I'll be coming. I will bring a pellet trap and archery block where we can tape targets to. I have some 6" reactive targets. They are good for long range shooting. I'll bring some knock down targets but they can only be shot with low power rifles.

as far as rifles:

AA MPR FT 177
Custom Bottle disco
Mrod .25

Don't forget pellets and Air if it is need it.

Agree with RD, we should bring targets, any type of stand you may have, and don't forget your air bottles or pumps. Always plenty of pellets.

Casey

It looks like I will be good for the meet, and can bring my M-Rod, Talon, FD-PCP, and maybe another toy or two.

Mind if I joint in. I'm a newbie to all of this. Like to get some pointers from shooters more experienced than I.

I'm located at Lake Anna a bit over a hour away.

Would bring a .177 QB79 and a .22 Synrod.

If it rains, we can certainly set up another day. Saturdays and Sunday afternoons are pretty slow around there, so there shouldn't be many conflicts.

Thanks for bringing a target.

Our fields are open May 2 and May 23 and May 30 (all Saturdays)

If people wanted to do a Sunday afternoon, it's open pretty much any day in May. Afternoon may be a bit hot though.

I know we'll never get a consensus, but any initial thoughts?

I haven't been shooting the Disco as much lately because it got a little boring to hit everything I am at on the first try =)

Hey guys, I have been talking to Daniel. I live in north eastern NC  ( Northampton county ) near the VA line. I'm about 30 miles south of Franklin, VA. I belong to the Tarheel Airgun Club  ( www.thagc.com (http://www.thagc.com)  ). We shoot in Mount Pleasant, NC and Ennice, NC. We're currently setting up another FT course in Pleasant Hill, NC. It is about 1.5 hrs from the Richmond area. The club is hoping to get more people interested in the sport of Field Target. If anyone is interested, please come and shoot with us. If you don't have a rifle, the club has a couple of loaners. We can also pair you with someone and you can shoot their rifle. These matches are low key. We do follow all AAFTA rules. So don't be shy. We all started sometime. It's great fun for all ages. If you have any questions, pm me or shoot me an email at chriscorey@embarqmail.com.

Hope to see you at a match.
Chris Corey

Nice how much does it cost to fill up the tank

The cost is really low.... I think it was like $6.00 for a fill... the FINDING a location that does high pressure fills is another issue. Thats why I sold my pcp because it was an hour drive just to fill up.
