Title: Best Hunting Carbine-Under $200
Post by: SquirrelSniper25 on March 20, 2012, 09:07:39 PM
Hey guys, well I should be getting $150+ for my beaver pelts this year. Was hoping to buy a disco, but 1/3 of my pelts just slipped since it got so warm out when I was thawing them out to flesh them. :( What would yall recommend for a light carbine squirrel and dove gun for under $200. No Co2 please. I'm thinking a Benji 392, maybe get it steroided in case I wander upon a coon or woodchuck while hunting, but I don't know yet how much that costs. My Marauder is great, but not a gun I would want to carry all day. :D It's gotta be capable of at the very least .75" at 30 yards. :D

Still undecided on whether to get a new AG or a powder burner. I'm thinking the Marauder .25 is all I'm really gonna need for an airgun. :D Tack driving accuracy and 40FPE is plenty for me. Don't think I would be able to shoot a springer or a multi pump after handling this beast. :D

you can find a used disco for 150 with out a pump and the best part is if you keep it open sights you can put a sling in it and its super duper lite weight..

Sounds like you answered your own question.  You're comfortable where you are at, like you say.

Wait until Airgunsdaily has a refurbished Disco in. 177 and .22. They should be about $190.

I  agree with what lampchops said. Wait for a refurb disco without a pump, as you already have one. Its capable of the groups you mentioned with a scope, plus its really light. But goodluck with whatever you chose  :D

I'm thinking a Benji 392, maybe get it steroided in case I wander upon a coon or woodchuck while hunting, but I don't know yet how much that costs.

A steroid benji is an acquired taste.   You gotta love a pumper, and not mind pumping.  Really, you are only gonna get 1 shot about every 20 seconds with one of these.  The triggers need some work, but it is just disassembly of ~5 easy parts and polishing.

Here is the good from a Benji 392.  Right out the box, they put out good power, to the tune of 12-15 ftlbs.  So, if you wander up on a chuck, or coon, STOCK setup should have enough power, and heck, you can pump it to 10 pumps if you are not sure.  This should be good for 25 yds power-wise.  They are capable of 1-1.5 inch accuracy at 50 yds, so easily meet your accuracy criteria.  They are short, they are light, they are powerful.  Fun to plink to 15-20 yds with 4pumps, so not terrible for shooting sessions.
Go to RL airgun supply, or Accurate airguns websites.   They have the refurbs around 100 bucks, 30 day warranty is all you'll need.  Make sure it works, and is accurate.  Get one of Greg Lundys integrabases, and scope it with a decent 4power scope.
It will probably do all you'll ever want from this power range.   Save your other hundred, add to the pot, and when ready, send it to Mac-1 for a billet steroid job.  It will hit pcp power range then, in a neat, self contained package.

But get your feet wet with a refurb or a used one.  The bluestreaks are also available in .20 cal, some folks love that cal for hunting.  Trajectory is slightly flatter, and pellets can still be 14.3 grain.

God bless,

Farmer

A Benjamin 392 is very nice as Farmer suggested. Definitely go for the .22 instead of the .177. The .177 isn't nearly as powerful as the .22. They put out around 14 FPE 8 pumps with CPHPs. The iron sites not so good, and are hard to get used to. The gun is accurate and begs to be shot accurately, so maybe a good peep sight would help a lot. Like Farmer said too, pumping gets annoying unless you're plinking.

What about a Hatsan mod. 95 in .22 cal. with a nice Leapers 3x9 ao ir scope and a tune from shadow the man. What are you going to be hunting that you need 40FPE ??

I wouldn't consider that a carbine. Granted a Dicsovery or 392 isn't a carbine, either, but they are lightweight. A Hatsan 95 isn't lightweight. It is a very nice springer though.

consider a refurbished 392? Usually can be had for under $110-115 shipped.
They usually sell fast when they're on airgunsdaily.com aka http://www.airgundepot.com/392-rm.html (http://www.airgundepot.com/392-rm.html)

also... not a bad price: http://www.airgundepot.com/rws-34-refurbished-air-rifle-22.html (http://www.airgundepot.com/rws-34-refurbished-air-rifle-22.html)

What about having Mike Melick chop a xs-b28s down to carbine lenght and do a full tune on it in .22 cal. then get a good 3x9 scope. He is recomended as a excellent barrel choper and crowner. The 392 steroid does sound like a killer to though.

Chopping a springer just results in a rougher firing cycle and more vibration. If you don't mind it, then go for it.

If you're really set on carbine...
a p-rod (aka marauder pistol, $320+)
or a heavily modded 1322  ($56 stock)
with shoulder stock ($25-30) might work too... though the p-rod is way out of the $150 ball park.

(http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTOv8wCzIJl8GoUbP4Mg9F1uGQk8m0ZvjagxwQFvPFBnwsJunUjWQ)(http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ0vqwScgYKhSmLTwWOami09iaV_SGtff5ZOueOwGaTn9tN4ogLLg)
You'd basically be making your 1322 into a 2289, longer barrel + shoulder stock + metal breech.
In stock form though it should be able to take squirrel and dove, just not at 30m, more like 20m. The hb22 works well enough at 50-60 ft which is about 15-18m, and the 1322 is supposedly a lil more powerful then a hb22.  Try to keep the range between 30-50ft. Takes more focus, and steadiness for the long shots with an air pistol, especially w/o a shoulder stock.

it would also make for a decent followup shooter or backup in pistol form.
It'll never be useful on mid-large sized game though.

"Chopping a springer just results in a rougher firing cycle and more vibration."
I think Mike Melick and a bunch of guys that have had him do this might not agree with you. But your right on a no tuned rifle i'll bet.

I learned that from Tom Gaylord. Most likely the most well know and respected man to ever talk about airguns.

Lampchop, thats a good reference but I think we each have our opinions so lets let it drop. No way to prove either way right ?

Nope, I agree with you lol. Chopping a springer then tuning it will make it less twangy and it will have a nice firing cycle. Chopping a barrel on a springer and not tuning it most likely will result in more twang.

yup.   get a power adjustor and a heavier hammer spring and they put out some good power.   mine shoots pretty flat at 35 yds with 18gr exacts

Keep the great ideas rolling in guys! Still thinking about a 392, they are a little loud for my tastes though it seems. I like the 1322 idea, and the 2400kt even better, but I would like to buy something all ready to shoot, not have to mod it all up. Basically gonna use this gun for camping trips and hikes.

If anyone sees a refurb disco $150 or lower, lemme know ASAP please! :D Probably won't have my $$ till like June though. How are the open sights on the disco?

I don't have one yet, but this is what I'm planning on doing and it doesn't look like it's very hard to go form co2 to hpa and back .     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqBFtRT4Qx0&feature=player_embedded# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqBFtRT4Qx0&feature=player_embedded#)!
