Title: Birthday shoot
Post by: Furseeker on October 08, 2010, 09:29:24 PM
Not that I needed any special reason, but because today was my birthday I snuck out of work a few hours early. My wife was busy doing wife things so I had a little time to shoot the dairy farm again. It rained for the last two days here in Utah and that kind of rain can turn a dairy farm into quite a mess. So the majority of birds harvested today were deemed un retrievable because of the deep mud and muck. I was able to retrieve a 2 from the 6 or 7 I shot. And I pretty sure I came across some more ZOMBIE birds again. One in particular was shot from about 35 yards and folded like a cheap lawn chair when he took the CPHP to the center of his chest. I mean he just crumbled and didn’t even twitch, I watched him for a few minutes then walked away to shoot at a few more birds. I was gone less then 5 minutes but when I came there was no bird to be found.

Then a few hours later I was able to return for just a few minutes, I was really suppose to be running an errand for my wife but felt like a had few minutes to spare so I stopped by for dairy farm for the another quick hunt. I was able to score 2 more, so the grand total of retrieved birds today was 2 blackbirds and 2 Starlings. I was able to make one truly long shot but to be honest I missed the bird I was aiming at and stone cold the one just below it. But I guess I’m owed a few for all the fly offs and zombie birds.

Good shooting and nice pics.  That rifle sure looks good.  I look forward to your dairy farm hunts.  Can't wait for the next one  :)

Dave,

First HAPPY B-DAY. It's nice to have an area that's close to be able to hunt. Is the Remington a .177 or .22 cal. It's a shape looking shooter and way to take out them pest birds.

Thanks guys, and Frog mine is .22 and I do love it. I'm sure it will get plenty trigger time in coming weeks. I really can't wait for cold weather to concentrate the starlings. Then the numbers will start to pile up.

Nice shooting. I am still laughing about you hitting a bird you did not shoot at though. That's just funny.

Man, you are going to be like these other guys.  You are going to have to a different gun out everyday for exercise.  Great shooting and Happy Birthday!

(Mine is next Sunday.  It is the dreaded FIVE-O)

Atchman,  that's what I'm gonna do! I'm gonna tell my girlfriend I need different rifles with different amounts of energy needed to cock them. I'll say its drs orders that for.my physical therapy he wants me outside,  shooting a different gun, for a few hours a day.  This just might work ......lol

Happy early birthday to you, You look great for 40, not to mention 50

Thanks again guys. I've got a plan in mind that will probably take some time to accomplish. I want to get out soon and take atleast one bird with every air rifle I own. I'm not positive but I think the new NPSS brings the total to 13. Taking thirteen birds in one day is quite a challenge, let alone taking each one with a different gun. But I'm going to try to do it in the coming weeks. I'm positve I could do it from home, in a few weeks when the starlings start hitting the suet feeders, but not all of my rifles are backyard friendly.

You have thirteen air guns?  I thought I had it bad!  If any of them ever get lonely you can send them to your friend Randy, he'll square them away for you and give them some exercise.  :)

Randy I'm sure I'm not the only one here with that many. And they are run all the way from two cheap little daisly 880 and 922 all the way up to my RWS Feuerkraft PC, with a Discovery in the mix. So it's not like there all top shelf rifles. I keep thinking the next one will complete me, but it only puts of the urge for a little while. I'm doing my absolute very best to try not to hard to want the 850 air mag. But everytime I see post here and read about I think I want one even more.

again, nice shooting man. I always read your short hunting posts. makes me wonder. I live way out in the country, just down the street from me, within 3 miles are about 10 or so farms, some are dairy. I wonder if they would mid me taking care of some pest birds for them??? seems like you have a great time doing so. Wonder if i should talk to some of them about it? anyway happy birthday, and good luck on your 13 adventure.

I can see when that 850 comes in the mail and you quietly whisper to the box, "You complete me". THEN your wife hears you say it. :P

Ah yes, I fondly remember when I had 13 air rifles  :)

I had plenty of space in my 2 gun safes, it wasn't that hard to decide on a shooter to take hunting and my monthly maintenance schedule was very easy.

Now I have 5 gun safes and I still don't have enough room to store em all.  Deciding on a shooter takes me a bit of time, my maintenance schedule has turned into a log book so I can remember where I left off and my pellet shelf is now straining under the weight .  But, these are all "problems" I gladly accept  :)

Trust me Dave, 13 is going to turn into 23 before you even know it, then that number will rise, it's just a never ending cycle.  Like you, I keep looking at the 850 and I've been on the fence for quite some time now,  but deep in my heart I just know that I "need" an 850 to "complete" me  :)

BTW.. I haven't been air gun hunting for quite some time now because I'm busy with my bow hunting so I really look forward to your dairy farm hunts so keep posting those great hunts from that farm.  Until I have a couple of deer in the freezer I have to get my airgun fix from you, Ed, Harry and all the other GTA hunters posts  :)

Jeff I'm glad I'm not alone. My wife asks why I need so many, and I'll I tell her is they each have something that the other don't. And if I ever want to invite a few friends to go with me I have them covered with guns. I do most of my hunting alone so that occasion has never come up. Some of them are project guns, and I'm  always changing springs and seals trying to find perfection. I my kids enjoy shooting some of them down in the basement at spinner targets. Everytime the wife catches me going over the classifieds looking for guns she just rolls her eyes. She like to take in stray animals and give them a good home and I tell her air rifles deserve the same thing. Were nearing the end of year and it looks like my company is poised to hand out bonus checks again this year. So I believe I will aquire the 850 in the next few months. And reading Harry's posts about his various Condors is always interesting to say the least. I suppose there are worst things a grown man could spend his money on.

I've used the same reasoning with my wife in the past  :)   After all these years my wife finally understands that air guns are not just a hobby with me, they are my passion.   Once she finally understood that she gave in, ran the white flag up the pole and unless I spend a really large amount of money she just looks the other way when it comes to my air gun purchases.  On the rare occasion when she does start to give me some flap about an air gun purchase I now always give her the same answer.  I tell her I'm 53 years old, I worked hard all my life, was forced to retire from my injuries and now that I'm retired and have to struggle with my bad back every day of my life I'm going to spend my remaining good years fully enjoying my air gun passion to it's fullest and if that means spending more money on guns and such then so be it.  I always end my speech with the fact that she knows that she can spend money on anything she wants and I don't bother her so she should reciprocate with me.  By the time I'm done with "the speech" she just stands there, looks at me and says  "fine, enjoy your BB guns" and walks away  :)

Just like your wife, myy wifes big thing was always that she just didn't understand why I needed so many different guns.  When I first started collecting them I could always explain to her that I needed a different caliber, or a different kind of stock, or a less or more powerful power plant, but of course after awhile that argument just didn't cut it simply because I had so many guns.  I finally just "fessed up" and tried to explaine to her how much I loved air rifles and that I was literally addicted to collecting them.

My wife still thinks I'm nuts but she finally "gets it".  But, I still make it a point not to push my luck and I do try and pace myself when it comes to new purchases.  :)

The fact that our wives have "permitted" us to buy so many air guns proves that deep down they really do understand how much we love the sport and I know for a fact that they would rather have us at home playing with our BB guns then out running around with the guys on a Friday night spending money on other things  :)

And as for the Condor,, I hate to add fuel to the fire :) but if  you get one you're air gunning will never be the same, trust me  :)   my condor is just freaking awesome, there aren't words to describe what an amazing hunting air rifle it is  :)
