Title: 760 Hot Rod
Post by: Tack Driver 10 on November 16, 2017, 07:42:56 PM
How do you Hot Rod a 760?
This is how I did it.
Add a 2100 pump tube, FT piston and valve, brass barrel band, and wood furniture.
Also opened up the ports and sealed the leaks.
Has a stock rifled barrel but it's not very accurate.
Drilling holes through the rifling to mount the sights is not commensurate with accuracy.
May be a good candidate for a Challenger (LW) barrel swap.

Pump stroke= 4.310"

With 7.9 CPHPs
05 pumps=600 FPS 05.90 FPE
07 pumps=730 FPS 08.20 FPE
10 pumps=785 FPS 10.81 FPE
12 pumps=820 FPS 11.79 FPE

Here it is with a stock V1 for comparison.

Made a few more mods today:

Installed a Challenger, aka LW barrel.

Made a brass collar that presses onto the hammer.
This adds about 4 grams and takes away most of the creep.
Best of all it acts like a 2 stage trigger now.

Very cool, TD!

Thanks for sharing!

Nice!! I added a LW barrel on my crosman 2100 and it shoots nickle size groups at 35 yards. At first I was a little leery about putting a expensive LW on a cheap gun, but now I don't regret it.  ;D

This is why I use LW barrels:

A Dodge Omni would be a better choice, keep it in the family.  :)

Yep. A $100 barrel on a $15 cr2100.  :o But, like I said I don't regret it. I love the crosman 2100 platform. I have a .22 LW barrel sitting here that I need to install in another crosman 2100. One of these days I will finish all my projects.  ::)

I bought my 2100 new in 2012 and it was accurate right out of the box but if it wasn't I'd spring for an LW barrel for it.
It's not as accurate as an LW barrel but shoots Barracuda match pellets good enough.

Here it is with a recently added thumb hole stock.

Great looking guns Tack Driver, great work! Looks like you pinned the valve on each side?

Yes, I took out the punched stake and moved the valve forward to line up with the 760 receiver.
Two 8-32 wedge screws hold the valve along with the breech which gets a 1/4" brass bushing pressed on.
The screws are offset 120 degrees from TDC to clear the support ribs on the receiver.
The valve is a short version, only 1-5/16".

Wow, that looks so good.

I want to eventually build one like this.

Uh, so that brass barrel you showed is the LW? Need some of this cleared up for my 760 v1 project I started on. I found a NOS 761xl barrel for it, and a mac1 seal/piston upgrade kit with secret sauce included. And the valve source? I'm enchanted already!...real nice job!

The LW barrel above is not brass. I believe LW barrels are made from chrome moly alloy.
It looks similar in color to brass due to the lighting used.

I made the valve from the back part of a Crosman brass valve.

Looked back at the pics, and see what you mean about the lighting. Custom valve job, hm. Gotta study 760 mods more. I like swapping in beefier parts/sub assemblies.

In addition to the 2100 tube it also has a 766 NOS pump link.
Much more HD and solid than the stock 2100 link.

I'll have to look and see if I downloaded a parts diagram of the variant 1 760's yet? Need to look at the lingo and such yet. Being mechanically inclined, I usually only need to pay attention to what goes where. Then I'll know what it does at least. They say Henry Ford grew up with that ability.

When you added the LW barrel to the 2100, did you have to do any lathe or other work on the barrel to get it to fit or is there an LW out there that drops into the 2100? That would be great if there were a drop-in. I would be all over that.

I used a 18" LW Airforce barrel (you could also use a 24" barrel). The turned down part on the AF barrel  is 5/16" so it fits perfectly in the 2100 breech. I had to drill the t-port and cut the lead with sand paper on a dowel rod. The main part of the barrel is the same size as the OD (5/8") of the original barrel shroud.

Ok. Thanks for the clarification. Not a cheap idea, but certainly something that would make for a fun take on an otherwise very common pumper.

I bought my barrel for around $100. The reason I did it was because I love the 2100 platform and I wanted a super accurate gun.
