How Bad Is It To Leave Bare Wood Open For A Period Of Time?

I've had my "unknown hardwood" Benjamin Titan GP stock down to bare wood for well over two months. I've been lazy. I think I have the spot, where my thumb knuckle hits, pretty much shaped enough with a Dremel tool, to do a final sand and "de-hair" on the whole stock. But the stock has been bare wood for a few months. Is this bad on wood? P.S. It's been on the first floor of the house in Iowa, if that makes any difference.

Shouldn't hurt it a bit. Unless it's been raining and there' a hole in the roof!

+1 to Paulie's comments, unless you are in New Orleans and it's been sittin outside, you should be just fine.

As long as you don't handle it too much, oils and dirt from hands penetrate the grain and stain or let it get wet or bump it hard. Those are the things that a finish protects from. Mostly the staining from handling, it can be hard to get out. If you just let it sit till finished it should be OK.

Good call Garth, the oils in our hands, even when washed, are bad news on bare wood, hard to get those stains out.

Should you leave for a few months, make sure you keep it out of sunlight. UV rays will darken the wood. If this should happen a light sanding with 220 grit paper, then with a rag dampened with water, wipe the stock down. This will raise the grain where you can feel little "whiskers." After it dries, sand again with 320. It should remove all signs of any "sunburn", and raising the grain with water will leave the stock with a smooth, finish-ready surface after sanding.

Thanks, guys. Yeah, it's just sitting on a shelf in a closet for now, And the rare occasions that I do handle it, I wash/dry my hands prior. Hopefully within a month I'll finally have it finished.

If you get a pressure dent on raw wood take a paper towel and wet it down. Fold it over on its self, make sure its damp and not dripping. Then lay it on the dent for a couple of hours. Usually you can pull the dent pull using that method

BEFORE you raise the grain with water, wipe it down liberally with Naptha solvent and you will not have to take any chances of any oils or foreign materials blocking your grain. Even again after final sanding like a tack cloth. It will pop (show off) the grain nicely for a few seconds before it flashes off.
