Recently I obtained a 22 Benjamin Discovery. It's had a rough life as evidenced by many bumps and rubs on the stock. The metal is in fairly decent shape with a couple of rust spots, but the stock definitely needed some TLC. A bit of 120 grit paper took down the factory finish. Folks gripe about the Chinese junk, I'm not impressed with the Discovery stock finish either. After removing the whatever it was, the bumps and rubs were quite evident. A while back my wife purchased a Conair steamer for "ironing" clothes with steam power. It turns out that the little gizmo works pretty good for steaming out dents and raising the grain to smooth out the stock even more. After touching it up with a bit of 220 a coat of my "secret coffee stain" sauce was applied. Just soak some dark roast ground coffee in industrial alcohol then apply to the bare wood. Works a treat. It also further raises the grain a bit and helps get a smooth surface for later. Now it's on the shelf until I get the metal part ready. This one's going to get a setup similar to Ribbonstone's, with double barrel bands. So once the metal's ready I'll start fitting it to the rear barrel band. Once it's properly inlet we'll get on with the rest of the stock finishing. So far it's looking pretty nice. The wood under the nasty Benjamin finish looks decent, with a bit of stain it's looking even better. It's hard to wait until it's time to slather on the oil so we'll really see what we've got!

I'm a peaceful man and prefer the pursuit of peaceful sports. Those involving teams and balls of any sort tend to be deleterious to one's body and promote violence by both spectators and participants. The shooting sports, however, tend to promote self control and are peaceably participated in by those who know that their greatest challenge is their need to continually hone their own abilities.

This rifle is going to have double barrel bands like Ribbonstone's. Today I cut the rear sight base in two and fit the rear barrel band in place then marked the place on the stock for inletting. Now to get out the chisels, sharpen them up and see how badly I can butcher this job...

Well, that didn't turn out TOO badly. Not sure what "hardwood" they made this stock out of, but it's fairly soft and not easy to carve. Dabbed some stain on it and gave the whole stock one last coating of the same. Now to let it dry, touch it just a smidge with 400 grit, dust it well with a microfiber cloth and then let the finish begin! Sure am looking forward to seeing the figure come out on this stock. It's not bad for a piece of "mystery wood". The wet stain gives a glimmering of what it's going to look like once the oil is applied.

Aaaarrrrrgggghhhhhh!!!!
Well, shucks. Got ahead of myself and didn't think it through. If you want to do this mod, make sure you have the trigger group installed when marking where to cut out. There's enough slop in the pressure gauge hole to let you mark it wrong. When assembling the action to the stock instead of sliding right down into the slot and snugging up the muzzle end was stuck way up in the air.
? The attached picture shows how I had to cut out more of the stock to allow it to slide on down in where it was supposed to be. Now there's a gap behind the barrel band instead of fitting in nicely. <sigh> Live and learn.
