I bought a RWS 34P (plastic stock version) last week. It's been hard to cock and made grinding sounds from the beginning. I figured it would smooth out with use so I kept shooting it. Nope. It locked up after fewer than 100 shots and I was unable to cock it anymore. When I disassembled it, I saw that the piston had been grinding against the compression chamber with almost no lube, and burrs had formed on the compression chamber wall, halting piton travel. I sanded the burrs and applied moly to relevant spots and it cocks smoothly now. I wish I had lubed it before shooting it though because I wasn't able to completely remove the burrs (how do people do this?). I wasn't experienced enough to recognize that the sound/feel of the rifle was abnormal.
As an aside, I had a *(&^ of a time getting the barrel pivot cylinder back in. I had to bang on it pretty hard with a hammer to get it back in-- I hope I didn't damage anything (e.g, bend the barrel horizontally). Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a trick to it? It occurred to me after the fact that removing the breech seal might help the two pieces align better.

As for the galling, I used a dowel and wrapped sandpaper around it and kept working at it progressively going to finer grits til I was using 600 grit and then used my dremel tool with polishing bits again going to finer grits til it was nice and polished. I also polished the back edge of the piston. For the barrel pivot pin, you need to install it with the cocking lever removed and the barrel at an angle (breech open). Should go right in no problem that way. Then reinstall the cocking lever.

Eric, I appreciate the information. I just ordered a Vortek PG2 kit and I'm going to strip it and install with krytox 205, in part due to what you've written about it.
My RWS 34 still seems accurate despite having banged on it harder than I should have. I'm looking forward to seeing how it shoots after the tune.

Just got mine a little over a week ago, it was honking/grinding a little so I put a few drops in and continue to shoot a break in tin of CPHP. Really impressed with this gun, even with open sights it is deadly. At this early stage I find it hard to justify a tune kit. It's just about as good as I can imagine it being. Hit my 2" spinner at a little over 35 yards off hand. Holy $#!^%.

I put aside a new tin of CPHP which is all I have put through her so far. My goal is to shoot the entire tin with open sights to complete break in. So far open sights have worked rather well for my old eyes. Might just want to keep it that way for a bit.
