Synthetic thumbhole or wood?

For a breakbarrel if you had a choice of wood traditional stock or a nice synthetic thumbhole in the same gun which way would you go? This is for hunting. I have a thumbhole for a 870 shotgun and really like it but I didnt know if in a pellet gun it would be harder to shoot trying the artillery hold and such.

You're really into the realm of personal preference with this one. I personally prefer traditional wood stocks to any synthetic stocks - although my shotgun is a traditional shaped synthetic stock. I confess I've never shot with a thumb hole stock, though I would worry about breaking it if I had one. The traditional stock looks stronger to me, though that may be just appearance.

I am owning the HW97k in both standard wood stock and the synthetic thumbhole version and prefer the thumbhole stock any day over the standaard wood stock.
Though it is a personal preference, my opinion is that a thumbhole stock just contributes better to the artillery hold in certain shooting positions.

Thanks guys. My shotgun is long and heavy and I feel the thumbhole helps with the weight not just because of having a grip but also I can keep my elbow lower which is more comfortable for me. I can even shoot it one handed in a pinch. I realize gripping like that would not be good for a springer though.

I've found it depends on the wrist of the sporter stock angle, and the trigger position. The Gen 1 Marauder span was a little wide for me (and obviously others), and adding the Teryx AR pistol grip stock to it gave me much better trigger control.

Kind of with you on that….really do prefer wood, but on a rough conditions hunter, do like the care-free aspects of plastic. Wood feels better….but plastic better takes the dings, scratches that are going to happen if you actually go out into “the nasty”.

Just a reminder wood was in use long before the various synthetics became an option.
Wood that is cared for and even though it may show use, if maintained properly contributes to its personality, owner memories and stories and if need be can be refinished, repaired and yes dare I say even replaced as desired. Synthetics on the other hand you get what you get and there is no amount of refinishing that can be done to freshen up a well used and marred synthetic stock, it is what it is.
Traditional wood stocks give an air rifle a very different look, sound and feel/appeal; and just like with baseball no synthetic, composite or metal sounds like a well hit ball leaving the end of a quality wood bat.

Bought the few plastic stocked rifles because I like the wood stocked ones.
Really hate it when pretty wood gets beat up (bothers me less when it's ugly wood. Barely notice when it's a plastic stock)….won’t let that keep me from going out in the harsher world, I just take airgjns that are already factory-ugly.

TY for the replies. Ended up getting the Diana 34 classic in wood and will probably get the 34 ems in synthetic down the road.

Do like wood better. Even plain wood has a nice face feel.
But do own some plastic stocks.
Mostly its expectations of how it’s going to get used that day.
Got a bumpy boat ride, rough travel, brush, and expect it to rain that day….then plastic goes along with me. Does’t hurt my feelings when a plastic stock gets a bit of wear or a scratch.
Just playing in the more open woods, at the home range, all nice and weather protected…..then wood stocks.

Some people do paint plastic stocks. I have an RS2 and had a Peak TS45(later sold, I had 3) wood stocks painted with black pick-up bed liner and have used it on some old guns metal exterior that had a lot of rust and pitting. An old Pleasure KS-1, a Crosman Storm and a ancient Snow Peak B4-2. I have also used blue varnish stain on the wood stocks of a Industry Brand B3-1, the Pleasure KS-1, a I. B. QB57 side lever bull pup I sold and BAM B3-1 AK. Tried red stain once didn't work very well. Paint an old beat up Mendoza RM2003 I gave away with red Rust-oleum. Fun stuff.

Because I like wood, the few plastic ones are the sacrificial ones….they take the abuse so the wood ones don’t have to. Not all that important with the plain looking wood stocks, more so for the few kind of pretty ones.
I look at it like this…..what clothes do you wear to cut the grass or change the oil in your car?

The only use I have for a thumb hole anything is for a trap/skeet shotgun. Not for any kind of field gun, and never for any rifle.
