Carbon Fiber Barrel Shroud for 880/1977

I started working on a carbon fiber barrel shroud. I have used two pieces of carbon tube so far (8mm ID X 12 MM OD, 12mm ID X 14mm OD). I ordered a 1/2-20 Flared stainless nut to mount on the end of the barrel to allow me to install a LDC. The inner and outer tube fit was extremely tight, I had to use a rubber mallet the last four inches to get the inner tube to flush up. The fit is pretty good on the barrel and should be more accurate than the factory shroud when completed.
I had to sand the bottom of the carbon tube so that it would slide onto the barrel while in the frame. I also had to remove the forearm hooks on the 1977 since there is no slot in the carbon tube.
With the tabs removed it fit up nice.
I measured and cut the tubes to leave room for a 1/2 nut to so I can add a LDC.
I degreased and cleaned the end of the barrel and the inside of the nut. I put a small (1/4") wide circle of electrical tape around the end of the barrel to center the nut. I then epoxied the nut to the barrel and shroud using JB weld.
I will be drilling the shroud where the factory alignment nut was and installing and epoxying a 6mm dowel in the shroud that will locate in the frame hole where the factory barrel alignment nut was.
The last thing I will do is drill a small hole in the frame and shroud forward of the locating dowel for a 4mm screw. I will countersink a 4mm nut in the shroud and epoxy it in also. The 4mm bolt will secure the shroud to the frame. I'll post updates once complete and tested with LDC. Suggestions are welcomed.

The picture in the OP has the shroud running the length of the barrel to the valve body. This particular valve body will be used on a custom build with a full stock and not utilizing the factory receiver halves. For those that may want to make one using the factory receiver you need to mount the receiver to the frame and measure from the receiver to the end of the barrel (don't forget to subtract the treaded nut if you are going to use one). There is an inset in the receiver where the original barrel shroud fit under the receiver halves. Measure from the flat surface under the inset overhang.

In the word of Mr. Spock, "Fascinating."
Anxious to see how the full wood stock works out!

Took a pick of the 1977 I'm using the factory receiver on to show how the shroud does not go all the way to the valve assembly.
This allows the receiver halfs to close around the valve assembly and the shroud fits under the leading edge of the receiver halves. I have a set of metal receivers but they will not work with the new style receiver butt stocks. Guess I'll wait until I make the wood butt stock to make the switch to metal receiver halves. Ronno working on a jig design to drill the butt stock blank. I think it will work good for blanks with flat sides but not sure about finished butt stocks. The jig will use three guides made of blocks and drill bushings pressed in. The blocks will be clamped between rails. Each guide can be removed as the hole gets deeper into the stock blank. Planning on using an auger bit and grinding the screw point off. The guides will be mounted to and inline with two clamp boards so that the stock drill line can be aligned to the top of the clamp boards thus being inline with the drill bit. I think this will work. Now eleventy hundred other tasks later and I'll get to it.

The thru bolt hole will be the first operation after the flat stock material is cut to length.
If the blank is thicker than needed and the bolt hole wanders a bit, the finished sock
thickness can be indexed off the thru hole.
As long as the hole is in the proper location at the tang, the butt location is not as critical.

So, I screwed the SUMO on and looked down the barrel. EEEKKK!! it was not concentric, i.e. definitely would have clipped the baffles. I was pretty sure it was due to the head of the nut not being concentric so I backed it off a couple turns and all was clear. I ordered a 1/2-20 Redding die lock nut and it works great. Cannot see anything but barrel and light now looking down the barrel from the breach end.

So I have gotten around to working on the shroud again. I am adding a 4mm screw to the front of the frame and adding an 8mm dowel to the shroud to fit the frame hole where the factory barrel guide was located. To do this I cut holes in the carbon fiber to epoxy a 4mm square nut and 8mm dowel to the shroud. The dowel is as short as I could find but is still to long. The dowel must be short enough to lift the barrel from the frame to slide the barrel and valve body out of the frame. I used silicone grease and painters tape to mask the frame so the epoxy will not stick. This process should allow the epoxy to flow a bit and quazi bed the barrel to the frame also. For creating the holes I found that a drill bit didn't do a great job but what does work well is a milling bit in a dremel.

Looks like you are good.
The dowel must not extend past the wall of the pump tube or it will interfere with the pump travel.

Added the dowel to replace the barrel stabilizer. It is an 8mm dowel cut to 0.275" in length. I epoxied it in the same as the nut above. The barrel is very tight and secure with the shroud.

After further use and assembly/disassembly I believe it is best to leave the 8mm dowel out. It requires tweeking the barrel up for install and removal. Also I would recommend installing the AR style handguard because the mounting screws can be used to wedge the barrel in location also.
