While I was perusing the net looking for history I took a look at Pyramyd Air’s article by Tom Gaylord on a 101 refinished by GTA member Cloud 9. He used Brownell Duracoat two part paint without primer. The pictures showed a flawless paint job. He likes the Brownell’s due to durability and how thin it covers.I guess these rifles did not have any primer? If it works why change anything! I going sans primer.I still don’t really know what the black Japan is. It’s a lacquer and that’s all I know.
Lokey, you shouldn’t have mentioned a secret recipe from an old book. Come on, please share. I’m not scared. Lead is great stuff.
Thanks Don! I’ve saved this for future reference. I really miss lacquer paints. They’re so easy to work with. The way the chemicals blend into one coat after several layers is nice. Enamels just add layer upon layer.
My 101 and 105 are worn down to the brass, I can confirm no primer was used originally.Posted this product before but here we go again. Available at any Auto Parts store. I have used it on many motorcycle builds and it holds up GREAT with proper prep. (Motorcycle front forks take a fair bit of abuse.)I want specify "SATIN" because they do make it in Gloss as well but that doesn't look "right".
