Chuck Shopping-Recommendations?

I'm in the market for a 3" self-centering chuck; looked at the usual places (Grizzly, Little Machine Shop, industrial suppliers)-currently my best price is about $100 (LMS).
Any recommendations? Looking for one that you have experience with...
Thanks,
Jesse

I have enjoyed an independent 4 jaw from them for a few years now. Centers, toolholders, lathe parts too. They have been great. The post office lost my order just before the holidays this year. I called LMS and they shipped my order out again before the post office would even admit it was lost. They asked me to send one back if two showed up. Thank you Little Machine Shop. I know sometimes I can find it a little cheaper, but never with customer service like that. Thanks to this last order of a metric lead screw, I have cut some perfect metric threads. Grizzly isn't bad on service, but you pay for the name too. My three jaw from grizzly was well used and clapped out. I don't know what a new one would be like. I do have a pretty nice rotarytable/dividing set up from them. It has been great for a hobbyist. You can also try on banggood, Aliexpress, amazon. You can see reviews on youtube. Good luck

Thanks-that's just the kind of stuff that I wanted to know; always best to buy from a reputable vendor...
Might spring for a 4-jaw instead; to begin with anyway... Not familiar with aliexpress; or banggood-are they basically Ebay-type vendors?

I also use a independent 4 jaw chuck, have for over 40yrs, have a collect system that does an outstanding job.
Another reason for a 4 jaw is you can hold just about any ODD shaped object,
and get it center where you want, very handy, like making those drop bottle adaptors etc.

I have purchased chucks from Shars and been happy with them.

At banggood and ali, you should get shars quality at a better price. You will be importing them instead of shars. savings goes to you. Mostly the vendors will work something out if they send you junk. Mostly. The thing about it is that you have so little buying power, not much incentive to spend much time on a customer. That being said, I've pulled the trigger a lot on that stuff with pretty darn good results.

Unfortunately Mr. tools for cheap (Jeff Beck) got out of the game. He was a good small time importer of chinese tooling. I got plenty from him. A few er40 plates at a fair price back when they were as rare as hens teeth. I had another small time guy like that I think out of Indiana. I can't seem to find him anymore. I think that those guys got priced out of the game.

There is one on Amazon for ~$60
I find it is harder to get good deals at Banggood these days. Prices and shipping have gone up, though sometimes they really discount stuff in their US warehouse

Thanks for the suggestions all; I decided to spin the wheel with LMS-a tad more expensive there; but I feel like it's a better bet... Got a three-jaw to start with; also got a ten-pack of 5/16" tool bits; and some center drills...
Going to order some parts from Grizzly at some point; to expedite my lathe build tailstock-wise...

LMS has lots of mini lathe parts, including upgrades. From headstock to tailstock. They have nice ground leadscrews in different lengths too. I just swapped my g8688 leadscrew and half nuts out for metric parts. LMS has both imperial and metric. I mention this because I believe it's the cheapest way to get a nice leadscrew for a mini lathe build. Just a thought.

Thanks, good thoughts-currently I'm using 3/8-16 allthread; though have the ability to upgrade to precision ACME rod if I deem it worthwhile-only need to fabricate a new half-nut and bearing nuts... Otherwise had used a really tired old lathe at work; and got used to using other means to guide my cuts.
And for now; until the lathe proves itself worthy of such upgrades-my allthread is nice and cheap
