I noticed that some airgunners set up bait stations for rats and use a motion detector to alert them to the vermin's presence.
What motion detector seems to work the best for something as small as a rat? How close to the bait station is it positioned? Finally, would a motion detector be sensitive enough to detect something a little smaller like a mouse?

The basic driveway motion detectors from Harbor Freight have picked up both mice and rats in my back yard, sensors placed 2 - 3 feet from the food source. Of course I can’t say how many didn’t get detected but I’ve been here long enough to know we don’t have very many to begin with. The ones that were detected were summarily fed a small lead pill :)

Lol, I was thinking of "mouse hunting". The cat gets his fair share, at least 4-5 a week, but we seem to have an endless supply of field mice (and moles). They tend to get into the barn, shed and house. Trapping helps, but setting up a bait station and picking them off would be more satisfying.
I've managed to pick off 4 or 5 in the last decade, mostly at short range with a "custom" Daisy Buck, but did get one at 25 yards with a springer.
Don't know if a Ding-Donger would work or not, but a baiting station with a red light illuminating the area has crossed my mind, for when the weather gets better.

I have the Harbor Freight model also. One nice thing is that if you check the frequency of the transmitter, you can use two sensor on the same receiver. I use mine for squirrels & rats.
I have also used them to dispatch raccoons that were sneaking into a friends pool at night & taking a dump on the pool step. It was so dark that it was hard to see, so I set up a sensor pointing at the pool steps & set the receiver on silent. When the red light on the sensor came on, I flipped on the rifle's red light & out went their lights!

I will check out Harbor Freight. What is the "ding-donger" that everyone refers to? Sorry for the stupid question but I lead a sheltered life.

Ding Donger is the colloquialism coined by Harry (only1harry) some years ago, referring to the Harbor Freight driveway alert systems. There have been several SKUs over the years, some sold concurrently...all seemingly performing about the same.

They are made to tolerate being left out in the elements but I usually shield them somehow. A plastic coffee can is a good fit:

As positioned in that photo, it's too far away and too elevated to pick up a mouse reliably but it does alert on a rat. Here's one getting a JSB special delivery for his efforts:

I've been using a wireless XHSCAM doorbell cam and it picks up a rats heat easily and should work for mice. I set mine about 2 feet from baited area, it sends push notifications to ones smart phone via WiFi, about 35 bucks from ebay. It also has infrared tech built in for night vision.

I use wyze cams for home security. I have one pointed at a bird feeder and one at my bait station. They easily pick up mice and small birds day and night. They are less than $30 and don't require a subscription of any kind.

Here I thought those Ding dongers were some fairly high tech stuff. Don't know about the OP's "friend" ( ;) ) but seems like some good/cheap options available to assist in critter gettin' :D

I visited their web site and they said that the Wyze 3 is powered by a USB cable. There is no battery. What do you use for a power source for the outside cameras?
If it is plugged into an electrical outlet, wouldn't it be a simple matter for a bad guy to unplug the device to prevent him from inadvertently auditioning for criminal of the year on YouTube or you local police department?
Other than that, it looks like a pretty economical setup.

not sure it was mentioned , you can also extend the range on the harbor freight.. when you open up the sensor side , the antenna is obvious .. I added 3 feet of wire to it , and had it hundreds of feet away no issue

I have 2 set of the Bunker Hill driveway alarm. I muted one of my receivers, so all I get is the flashing light on the receiver. Just so I can use it for stealthy night ambushing of unexpecting vermin/rodents.

They use micro sd cards for storage but they are cheap now too. I've been running them for a couple of years and haven't had any issues. The V3 cameras have fantastic night vision.
