This is how the banner looks this morning.... whats up?
-
It's kinda back to normal... just not scrolling now.
-
I assume someone is 'tinkering'.
-
FWIW: I'm seeing the same on both iPhone and W10 laptop.
-
Looks like they added the new "Thank you advertisers" bar at the top of the page in lieu of the scrolling banner.
-
I can't tell because I've had all them blocked for a very long time now.
-
LOL Wayne.... I've just learned to ignore them. I understand the reason they are there... ;)
-
I am going to 'LOGOUT' until this mess is cleaned up.
See ya later!
-
Yep, it appears to be messed up again.
-
That banner is most annoying. It blocks too much of the page. It's blocking subject line. Good luck typing a subject on a new post when you can't see what you're typing. It's currently happening on my iPad and Android phone. This needs to be fixed.
-
Ron that's exactly why I use a desktop computer, sooo much easier to navigate.
-
The banner stuff is still overlapping the header, it's even covering the preview area in reply posting-I'm on chrome on my phone right now...
Jesse
-
Rarely do I use the IPhone to visit the forum. If I'm in an area where there is no internet I'll use my IPhone as a hotspot for the laptop.... such as in our bar/mancave. I won't even need to do that in the near future because I plan to run outdoor cat5 or cat6 to that building. It's well within the range for either.... maybe 100' or so from the main router but it's in the mobile home and wireless is blocked to the outside... mostly. I can hit it from the front porch but not in the bar/mancave.
-
Just got on with Opera on my laptop; and the banner ads are gone/not showing-which is funny; since they only started to get around my adblocker in the last week or two...
Jesse
-
I got the banners on my Samsung too. :-\
-
I see the same thing on my phone.
-
I see it on both laptops and the desktop..... :o
Ummm no, I'm not changing my browser.
-
4 piece ad in the way for iOS in portrait or landscape mode.
Looks like it’s a 4 panel sprite for efficient animation between ads. Height needs to be set for the parent container.
-
I am glad it is not just me... been that way all day on my laptop.
-
Steve,
We have been talking about it all day.
-
Steve,
We have been talking about it all day.
Doh!
It’s a super easy fix. I do this stuff all the time.
-
Any one else have the pop-up at the top of each page? Can not start a new topic or reply to any because I can’t see my typing. Here is a picture of what shows up, I can not seem to clear it off the page.
-
yes it just started on my laptop too same thing
-
Check Liz's help desk, already two topics there about it...
Jesse
-
I don't know what browser you're using. I use Firefox by Mozilla. It has a pop up blocker.
-
Moved to the Help Desk.
-
Ok guys hold the shift key down and hit the refreesh key that should do it, best way is to clear your cach and restart your comp. forum was updated and your browser could be reading old cookies. David
-
Changing the screen resolution seems to affect it as well. I have mine sent at 120 and it appears to be fixed.
-
Old cookies, new cookies, oatmeal or chocolate chip, still have the banners cascading on my phone after a hard start.
-
That works
-
I can't tell because I've had all them blocked for a very long time now.
;D
-
For the little it's worth, this while not a great picture, is what I'm seeing on my desktop running Win10 and Google Chrome and yes, I have an ad blocker installed.
Random lame thought? It kinda looks like they're trying to build a scrolling banner ad setup like the one on AGN that ad blockers don't work on
to make go away. Had that though after seeing that block of boxes up there and remembering my ad block program doesn't block whatever AGN uses...lol.
-
Hello all.
We are making some changes to make things more equitable for our advertisers. This required a change in the scrolling banners. You'll also see some "text" banners at the top of the page and underneath child bords. We are testing proof of concept there based on some requests for these types of banners.
As we make changes, and I've added a note to the NEWS section to this effect, we have to update the site's stylesheet. Stylesheets are often very static and your local web browser or phone browser assumes that the local file is just fine even though there's a newer one on the site. You need to force your local computer or device to grab the updated stylesheet.
For computers: it's usually as simple as holding the shift key down while hitting refresh. that tells the browser (almost all of them have the same function) to get a fresh copy of the site and not to rely on locally cached files. You can also just clear your browser history and restart your computer. That's not a bad practice once a week or so anyway. You can always test things by using a "private" or "incognito" session of your browser which should always grab fresh files.
For mobile devices and phones: My android phone was fine, but my iPhone was all jacked up at first. You have to clear the site cache on it as well, then it's fine. Go to settings, safari, scroll to the bottom and select "clear history and website data" and that should clear it up. It did for me.
I'm not anticipating any more stylesheet changes as the 4 block ad rotation seems to be working well across all the devices and browsers that I've tested so far. But if we do, we'll put a note in the rotating news section for folks to clear their browser history on their computers and devices.
Thanks
Rick

Thanks Rick....
I run Mozilla Firefox. I cleared my browsing history as you suggested. I closed then reopened my browser, logged into GTA and the issue is resolved.
I do not run ad blockers because the ads really don't bother me as long as they don't get in the way like this recent episode.
-
Awesome.
Cheers

Thanks Rick.
what is the "refresh" while holding shift key?
Should I use Shift+F5? I thought "refresh" command was Ctrl+F5 ? but then I am old school ;D.
I am using Chrome on Win7 if that makes a difference.
-
Scott, just clear your browsing history, close your browser then open your browser and log back into GTA.
I don't know where "refresh" is either.
-
Thanks Bill, that worked.
also I found this... https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/831402
Looks like "refresh" is now Ctrl+R o maybe Shift+left click to select "reload".
Dang, I used to be the Geek now I feel antiquated. ;D ;D
-
Hey there all.
The "refresh" is the little circle next to the address bar. It may be called "reload" as well.
Glad it's sorting out.
Cheers
Rick
-
Oh, I got ya... It's in the browser software and not a hard key on the keyboard.

DOH!
Boy was I off in left field!

Well, to your credit.. you been sick with some kinda nasty secreting from several orifices that most likely affects clear thought processes... you get a pass.... pun intended.
-
The shift reload worked on the W10 laptop using Edge.
The reset didn't work on the iPhone. Thx for the step by step to clear data and history, which worked. :)
-
Thanks everyone. Clearing the cache took care of it.

True that Bill, plus the lack of alcohol isn't helping either. :o

Yes, BAC is important to our sanity.

Three topics merged due to same content...

Respectfully, I'd like to suggest to the developer to use cache busting naming conventions for the stylesheets so that users don't have to clear caches for such a thing. The way it works is you take a stylesheet name in the html/php (not the actual file), and append ?123456 (any random number, but I like to use the date of change) so that instead of:
MyStyles.css
Use this instead:
MyStyles.css?01072022
What this does is tells the browser that the styles have changed, and that it should clear it's cache and reload the styles.
Easy Peasy and takes the cache clearing onus off users and puts it squarely on the shoulders of the developer, as it should be.

What's the procedure for Chrome on Android?

Open your browser and pull up all your open tabs. There should be three dots top right corner. Select that and choose settings. Go down to privacy and security and then clear your browsing data.
Let me know if that works for you.
Cheers
Rick
On another note, I’ve reached out to our developer on the suggested way to call the stylesheets from the template files. I’m awaiting a reply.
-
Rick... as you know we have different themes available. I know in the past some changes worked differently of some of those themes. Do you know if these recent changes act diffently? Have y'all looked at at the other themes?
-
Hey there..
The issue was that I needed to create a responsive row and column arrangement so the ads would adjust for mobile devices. I just needed to add a few lines to the CSS. I'm so used to just refreshing or clearing my cache as a normal course of action that it's not a big deal. Something doesn't look right = hard reload.. problem solved. easy. So when it went funky for me, I just cleared it and it was good to go. As long as modifying the CSS call in the PHP won't cause the server to constantly send the stylesheet unnecessarily some 40K times a day, I'm pleased to just make it so those changes, as they come up, are forced down to devices.. Since that's a little above my personal experience level, I've reached out to our developer to see if it's a viable long-term solution.. i.e. we set a ?code and as long as that stays the same the client device knows all is still good.. if it changes, it knows to get a fresh copy.. if that's how it works.. great. I just want to make sure before I go that route. Again, above my personal experience level.
Cheers
Rick

Shouldn't one have a 'Test' website to try things "above my personal experience level"?
But what do I know.
I was only an ISP provider back in the mid 90's and worked in Court Houses and Lawyers offices for years.
So that probably don't mean anything.
I also use the Brave Browser that stops that kind of nonsense so I never saw this issue.
Yes. It's on my phones also. But I never visit here on my phones.
-
It's the price of progress... ;)
-
Thanks for the fix. It worked and I will know next time what to do.
-
PC works fine, the Samsung with Chrome still has a problem though.
I also agree, if you make changes, you really have to debug the system before going live.
-
Frankly guys to sandbox the entire site for a css change is not practical. Sorry. I’m talking to our dev guy. It will get sorted and it should not be an issue going forward.
Cheers

"Heavy is the head that wears the crown" Rick...
I applaud your efforts.

I have no idea why one would need to "Sandbox" the Web Site.
I have the entire site downloaded and saved and it runs fine on Windows 7.
It's like I'm online even when I'm not.
-
Clearing the cash on my phone now displays this.
-
Clearing the history fixed mine. I downloaded and installed Brave as Jeff suggested. Seems to work good and no ads at all.
Not sure if I'll keep using it, I like Firefox and I don't mind the ads as long as they work right.

Herm I though Google decided a while ago to not support addblock guess that changed.
-
Mom called me Herb.... not Herm.
Honest ;)
-
I've had Adblock Plus on my Google Chrome since Scott suggested it almost 2 years ago. Works just fine on mine on my Win10 desktop pc.

I've used it with Mozilla Firefox on Win10, Win11 and Linux Mint. It works great on all of them.
-
What I have is adblock and I've had it quite a while now. It works really good on Firefox in linux Mint 19.3. I've been steering clear of anything to do with Microsoft and Google as much as I can. It's literally impossible to avoid Google when you're in youtube which as been bad news for a very long time now. I still do upload some graphic stuff there but it hasn't got anything to do with politics so they don't even seem to bother me at all even when I publish it for the public.
-
What does add block cost?
-
Free... Check the link I posted earlier. ;)
-
Just tossing this out there....
Brave browser takes care of all of it and it has alot of features in the settings. Honestly, I can't tell that I'm not using Firefox except there are no ads.
-
I took a shot and downloaded that Brave browser. Clean install, no history, cookies or anything else. I cleaned it all, closed the window and restarted Brave
and unless there's a box or 3 I need to check in settings, this is what I see when I come to GTA. Brave shows those same 4 different colored grey boxes at
the top just like they show up when I come to GTA using Google Chrone.
Anyone got any ideas why? I have my own but for now I'm not typing more, just want to see if anyone else is seeing these.....
-
Yep.
Same here on Chrome with Adblock
-
None of this works on my Ipad. Guess I'm going to have to call my daughter. She was a Mac help desk operator for a while. If she can't fix it it can't be fixed.

Steve, that's what I see with Blaze... just the grey boxes and no ads.
-
For everyone else... I have 2 laptops and my PC at work. I use Firefox on all except the one laptop I installed Blaze on.
At work on the desktop Win10 and my Firefox laptop running Win7Pro, I went into FF settings and clear the browsing history. As Rick said... it forced the browser to refetch (for lack of a better term) the GTA page. I had to log back into GTA (the browser normally saved login and password). When it came up, all was right in the World again. Firefox resaved my login and password and we're good to go. It's worked on all 3 machines and I can't imagine (if done exactly as I said) it wouldn't work for anyone else.
-
Had left it alone on my cell; to see what would happen-and this morning it fixed itself...
Dunno if it was the site; or just the phone though...

Brave has a version for IPad.
I only use Brave now on ALL my devices. IPads, NotePads with Android, my Phones, and all my Computers.
-
I am glad the advertisements no longer move across the screen.
-
The grey bars at the top don't bother me. Who's looking at that anyway?
One can get slick and do what I did. Downloaded the stuff and edited away all the garbage.
I click on that version and still see GTA but there is absolutely NO add bars and such!
But that's just me! And NO I will not share it!
It's not my intention to disrupt cash flow.
It IS my intention to STOP garbage from EATTING the bandwidth I PAY FOR!
You have any idea what 10 gb internet service costs a month?
-
Looks like they figured the scripting out, the Banners are now above the text boxes.
