Had some free time today and had picked up some camo paint from Walmart, so I decided to try my hand at a camouflage finish on my Trail NP2.
This is the first time I have attempted this, so purely an amateur, but hey, I did watch a YouTube video on how to do it before i started!
As with my Black Granite Gamo, I lightly sanded the entire surface and then wiped it down with an alcohol soaked rag to remove any oils, grease or goo.
I applied 2 coats of primer to help with adhesion then did random passes with the OD Green, Brown and Black. I had gathered various leaves, branches and other vegetation from the woods behind the hose, so the scheme is Overgrown Backyard...
I laid out some leaves and beaches and over sprayed with Army Green and Tan. I then laid out some tall grass and pine needles and over sprayed again with the OD Green, Brown and Black. I finished up by laying some smaller leaves and branches in some of the open spaces and overplayed again using contrasting colors. If it was dark, I sprayed light, if it was light I over sprayed dark. I finished up with some highlights in black to deepen the overall color. The Army Green and Tan were a bit bright and I wanted a darker finish.
Anyway, I'm pretty pleased with how it came out. Five cans of Wally World flat paint & a can of primer @ $3.50 a can, total investment: $21
I'm going to let the paint cure for about 48 hours before I reassemble everything. I'll post some picture of the finished project after it's all back together...

Great job, looks really good, however it looks gray to me, must be my monitor. Anyway, the detail is fantastic and thanks for sharing the technique you used.
Dave

Looks good to me, Paul!
-
Love it, Paul!
-
Thank you for the positive comments. I was hesitant since this was my first attempt, but, worse case, I’d just paint over it. The only gray is the primer, so it may be your monitor.
-
I like it!
-
Now that one I really like!

;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Great job Paul !!! About all I do is hunt and not a single one of my guns is camo. I've always liked the stock and forestock on the Prod Woodswalker.
-
Righteous!

Paul...I may try this on some of my plastic stocked rifles. Good Job Sir ! Best Wishes - Tom

Thanks! It was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Look up camo painting on YouTube, there are plenty of good ole redneck how-to videos!

So, when are we going to see a picture of the finished project? :D

So, when are we going to see a picture of the finished project? :D
Dinh...Look at your snow camo stock on your Benjamin Trail NP2 and that is what I will be trying for. I have a couple of plastic stocks that I am not using and I am going to try my hand at one of those first, as practice, before I go for the " Real Deal " on one of my rifles. Best Wishes - Tom P.S. I am heading out back and do a little Cotton Tail hunting at the moment but I will go into town later to pick up the paint.

Sounds like a fun project, Tom. Best of luck, with both the paint job and the wabbit hunting

Paul,
Are you sure this is your first? You did a great job!! I have been debating doing my NP2 due to some scratches, and I haven't decided if I will camo it or just restain it .... now you got me thinking ... :D
Cheers,
TJ

So, when are we going to see a picture of the finished project? :D
I want to apply a clear coat of Clear Matte to it before I put it back together. I think the clear top coat will give it an added layer of protection against scratches. I should have it all done and reassembled this coming weekend. Unfortunately, my J.O.B. tends to interfere with my projects!

The beautiful of camo is that scratches gives it more character and makes it even more effective IMO

This would be true if it weren’t for the light gray primer coat under the Camo. Besides, my wife said it looks really pretty and she’s not a fan of anything Camo!

Looks good man! Be sure to post a finished product pic.

What everyone said. OUTSTANDING!

Great Job...
Early on in my GTA adventures I bought 5 cheapo Industry Brand break barrels from a wholesale club to tinker with and learn from. I had a ball messing with them. One of them was "Frog"....

Those look great! As I read through the post I realized that I had about as much invested in paint as you did in each rifle! Great projects! I really like the HD Version! Classic! It would be right at home in the back window of a HD Ford PU! LOL!
-
Harley and Sleezy were donated as door prizes for a GTA fun shoot. I have no idea where they are now. I still have Frog here. He just hangs out in a corner someplace.
-
That was such a fun time. I learned a ton from those 5 guns.

howd I miss this , EXCELLENT WORK PAUL ! you need to start doing this professionally !

Thanks Rob! Maybe when I retire I’ll have the time. Although, if it becomes a job it probably won’t be as much fun!

LOL.... you got that right.

It's done, I added two top coats of Clear Matte for some durability to the finish. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out! ;D

Awesome, Paul! 8)

Great job! Never seen a NP2 look so good.
-
Very professional Paul. Best I've seen achieved by hand. Said it once & I'll say it again; AMAZING!
-
Looks like you nailed it Paul. Glad you went with a satin finish. The glossy stuff looks fakey. The home jobs look so much better than dips. Plus, it's more personal.
-
Thank you for all the great feedback! The clear matte finish still gave it bit of a sheen, more than just the flat paint, but I wanted to add a layer of protection so it wouldn’t scratch too easily. For my purposes, it will do!
Now, what the heck will I do to top this one??? :o
-
Paul, make sure you don't accidentally drop it whilst in the woods, you'll never find it ;D
Well done!

Funny you mention that... It was too late when I finished up yesterday, so I did a quick photoshoot in the wild this morning! It looks really good in the woods, but I may have to tie bright colored flag to it if I need to walk away from it for any reason!
-
Hey Shadow..are you there ? Did you SEE... this gun Paul did ? To look at it... is to... LIKE IT ;) Best Wishes - Tom
-
Funny you mention Shadow Tom. I was going to suggest that Paul reach out to Shadow and ask him what he is using to finish his camo schemes off with. He did the FireCat for me and the finish is some tuff stuff. I don't feel at all like I need to baby it.

Yes I've seen pictures of you gun and Hoosier Daddy's Snow Camo gun too. Both are Very NICE !
I've been waiting for The Synbad Make Over Too ! Best Wishes - Tom

I got this cool camo handle hunting knife, until I dropped in the woods. I heard it hit the forest floor, yet still had a heck of a time actually spotting it. So, from now on, camo hunting knives stays home and hunting knives will have blaze orange handles goes on woods walk.

After seeing Paul's sweet camo I'm possibly rethinking the SynBad scheme. On the other hand, I'm also considering replacing the SynRod in the near future. If that's the case, I might do well to leave the canvas blank for the next owner to choose and saving my vision for the replacement.

Few days hehe late and a dollar short on replying but great camo job and am impressed. This method of using lighter colors and laying your branches sticks or leaves down and shooting darker over and repeat to get the desired effect. Again great work and I use Matte clear to seal the deal on my camo projects with 3 to 4 coats to make sure it can hold up to the woods and weather. Ed

Ed, you're never too late to this party! And coming from you I am honored and delighted that you are impressed! It was a fun project, and I ended up doing my SynRod stock as well!
