According to Rick there's not much that can be done to fix this. Except reloading photos to those threads.

Yes sir, I've considered that.  Doing so would require that I:

• Invest a lengthy effort to search out and identify threads that have broken image pointers.  Which would be difficult enough where there are broken image placeholders that can be quickly spotted, but there are also places where there's just nothing
• Then scan through pages of images in the new gallery until I can identify the matching photo, and copy its new link.
• Then edit the image pointers in the original post.  Only that is not possible because editing is inhibited after 30 minutes.  (I suppose I could reply to the thread and put a new copy at the end of the thread, where few are ever likely to see it because, when opening a how-to thread and seeing all the images missing, the first instinct is to close the page and move on.)

So unfortunately at present there is neither a practical solution nor a possible solution.

It looks like the old system's sequential image naming scheme was carried over into the new system.  For example:

old: www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/MGalleryItem.php?id=7581
new: www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/gallery/albums/QB_stuff/Dir_1/main_7581.jpg

From this example it appears the migration assigned a prefix of "main_" and suffix of the file type (.jpg), and placed the images in named subfolders.

I imagine someone good at scripting could work this out.

I'd agree with the scripting part except for where the images are totally stripped.
Those are only fixable by re-editing the original post which, as you and other have noticed, is a No-No now days.
I'd like to download my whole folder but that is not do able also.

 I fixed it myself best I can, I put a link to my photos in the little globe webpage link in my profile. Anyone needing to see pictures will have to look around there for them.

I'm personally not worried about it. I'm certainly not going to read through my 46,000+ posts and fix pictures. I have most every picture I've ever posted labelled and saved in folders, and most are also saved on the Onedrive cloud service. My cell and tablet are set to send any and all pics I take automatically. And I don't even have to resize them. Just d/l them to my laptop or PC and attach to my post. 100GB of storage costs me $1.99 a month. If someone has a question or is looking for an image that I have I just repost it.
I'm definitely not gonna lose any sleep over it. It is what it is, just like the sale of the forum was.
It's the serenity to accept the things I can't change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.

How does one reload, and get the images back into the post, if Editing is turned off?

 If I run across a post I made with missing pictures, I hunt down the picture, most stored on GTA, and add the missing photos at the end of the thread.
