Hatsan .22 Edge Vortex Spring Ping
«

Hi. Not sure if anyone would know off-hand what the pinging noise might be when shooting a vortex air rifle. I have 2 other gas piston rifles (not Hatsans) and they do not make this pinging sound the way my Edge Vortex does.
I bought this recently from HatsanUSA and it was after 2 other shipments prior that they got the model correct that I ordered. They sent two different springers first and second, and finally they located a Vortex version which I now received.
The logo etching does say Vortex on the side of the chamber. I am wondering whether it is just the Hatsan brand gas piston guns that feels and sounds more like a springer (800fps is the same in vortex and spring versions for their .22 cals) due to the slower speed? Or might there be some other situation mechanically that would do that?
It only sounds springy when I release the trigger, the moment of the actual shot. There is no spring noise during cocking. It groups pretty well so far in my backyard out to 20 yards considering I am only using the open sights. I can still get multiple shots together within an inch.
I cleaned the barrel with about a dozen or more dry patches prior to first use (it is a refurb, tho) and those patches were filthy and grimy. I have cleaned it again after about 200 pellets. She seems to be a pre-owned used gun, which is all right, but just need to know if this spring-ping noise is normal for Hatsan Vortex type guns or if I should look to do something to figure it out and remedy it.
Thanks for your input!

I have a Vortex 95 QE and it makes a ping noise when it shoots. Doesn't sound like a spring, though. Springs make more of a "sproing" sound. I've read that others hear the ping sound too. I think it's normal.

I've always figured that small ping I hear is from the arm of the gas ram arm where it sits in the centering hole inside the piston. It's metal to metal and may be where that "ping" comes from when firing.
Never given it much thought but you might stop it by finding a plastic or rubber cap that fits on the end of the ram arm??

Ron..I have a couple of Hatsan guns with the Vortex Gas Ram. They both made a metallic ringing sound when fired. I also have a Hatsan 85 Sniper with a Spring Piston. That one did the same thing but was louder and much more pronounced. All of the Hatsan guns quieted down a lot, with use. I don't notice it now. Best Regards - Tom

Another vote for NORMAL here. Mine ping as well but it doesn't really bother me. I do believe they do quiet down some with usage.

The ping is coming from the sas vibration damper. The heavier the pellet, the louder the ping. Good way to determine if the pellets are too heavy for the powerplant.
It will also ping if the stock screw isn't tight enough.

The Edge rifles don't have the SAS setup but with all the hollow space in that rifle stock, you'll hear every little noise, it's why most people fill them with something to deaden the echo.

My 125 sniper vortex pings as well. Doesn't seem to do it every shot though.

I've tried several different tricks while tinkering/tuning to quiet things down but nothing so far with the pings but he's got me thinking about tinkering with something like the plastic vacuum caps they use on car engines and finding one that will fit the end of that gas ram arm and see what happens. Might not hold up long but they're cheap and I just might have to try that trick the next time I'm tinkering since I'm not done playing yet with the Webley VMX I gas rammed not too long ago...lol

Great, thanks you guys! I was hoping nothing was amiss. I took her apart yesterday for a better cleaning and to make a visual inspection - just "take down" style, meaning I took the stock off. Nothing is loose or broken. Put her back together after buffing her up a bit, and now she looks better, too.
So, I will not worry since this seems normal to you all. She does shoot fine so far. No complaints. I will consider what scp52 said regarding the hollow stock. Someone else had mentioned that to me on Facebook the other day. That makes sense and is an easy enough remedy. Also, longhunter, I will experiment with various weight pellets, thanks!
Thanks again everyone. Glad I posted here -- it's good to know y'all are right on with great advice!

Steve,
I'd expect those caps to be trashed on the first shot.
A small delrin donut press fitted into the piston might be a good try.
It would keep the Vortex arm centered and absorb/dampen any vibration.
