Title: bought refurb 87QE from Hatsan. should I use artillery hold or not ?
Post by: Abefroman on January 17, 2019, 01:05:08 PM
I'm still playing with this gun - couldn't pass it up for $99.  this is my first Hatsan and I was initially a little disappointed, but I'm slowly getting to 'know' the gun.  I've learned that you need to pull UP on the trigger for better accuracy. etc...   I haven't toyed with the trigger much but I plan to.

However, since this gun has such a short barrel, should I be using the artillery hold or not ?  Should I firmly grip the gun with my trigger hand or should I be gentle with it ?  Should I firmly shoulder the stock ?

cheers !!!

Some like a firm hold, others shoot better with the artillery hold and for me at least, it's taken trying both ways to see what works best for each of my rifles. Try both ways and your groups will give you a very good idea which way will work best.

All of the above!  Try them all till you find one that works for you AND the gun. 8)

Fwiw.. I sold one of these mod87 to a friend, and when we go shoot, he uses it directly over bags... very accurate. Less than an inch at 25yds..

When I got my Hatsan 95 with walnut stock, I was thinking that this artillery hold was a crock of tootsie rolls. I tried firm holds and loose artillery holds. I even tried changing up how I shouldered the rifle with a tight butt pressure and loose pressures.

I determined after some time with what shooting I've done so far that my 95 likes the artillery hold with a loose, but not slipping shoulder pressure for the rifle to shoot its best at this time.

I haven't tried bench shooting yet with this rifle, so using shooting bags may also be the same as using artillery hold, as the constant downward forearm pressure should be the same.

Apparently the rifle likes to slide back naturally during recoils, rather than being forced to absorb the recoil from its stock attachment screws, factory bedding and powerful spring action from any tight holds. Now, the barrel still isn't broken in with only around 100 rounds, so this method may even change over time as things wear-in to each other.
