Title: Ataman AP16 Compact
Post by: Rat Sniper (AKA: PaulT58) on December 30, 2020, 08:57:02 PM
I got some cash for Christmas, so I treated myself to a pistol I have been looking at for quite a long time!  I really liked the Titanium model, but opted for black just because there seemed to be more parts and accessories available in black then there was in Titanium.

Right out of the box, the shooting the JSB Exact RS 14.35 grain pellets at an average 631 fps, making 12 FPE.  Not bad for the compact model.  I was using iron sights shooting freehand, so there was no grouping!  LOL!  It did seem to be shooting low and to the left, so I may put it on a bag on a bench and see if I can adjust it so it's shooting more toward where I'm aiming.  But, it wasn't off by much, maybe about 3-4 inches.

It feels great in my hand, it's really lightweight, but boy is it LOUD!  I have a DonnyFL adapter and a 0db Compact LDC on order, so hopefully that will squelch the back without adding too much weight and length to the barrel.  I also ordered a couple spare magazines, since it only comes with one 7 round magazine.  It did come with 2 fill probes!  I'd have preferred 2 magazines, bt it is what it is!  Fortunately, the magazines were pretty reasonably priced at PA for $19.99 each.

I chose the compact because I want to be able to holster it and carry it with me when I go into the woods.  The compact is still 12" long, so it could be a challenge finding a holster that fits it.  On the plus, it's a pretty slim design, so I hope to find a decent tactical holster to carry it in.

One of the thing that intrigued me about this pistol was the ability to swap the compact barrel and air cylinder for the standard versions, which brings the length to 14", but should bump velocity another 50 - 75 FPS.  So, if in the future I feel I need a longer, more powerful Dirty Harry version, I just need to get the barrel kit and air cylinder, which is about ¼ the cost of the pistol.

Once the adapter and LDC arrive, I will be testing other pellets do see what it likes best.

Congratulations on your pistol... Did you decide to go to a sidearm to get up close and personal with the clientele at Paulie’s? Looking forward to a post from you on its first customer.

They really are solid pistols, Ataman makes great guns.  I had the long version and turned it into a compact, easy switch.  I had the DonnyFl Tanto on mine, quieted it right down.  Also put a UTG 2-7 pistol scope on it.  I sold it pretty quickly, never even checked fps, just wasn’t my thing, probably wouldn’t have used it much if I kept it.
If you are into pistols though, this is the one to get.

Thanks Luis!  I need to find some better sights to have even a fighting chance against a rat at Paulie's!  But, if I come upon a snake or other vermin, it should do the job!

I got it mainly to carry as a sidearm in the woods.  I have a Hatsan AT-P1, but it's just way to bulky to carry.  I also have some CO2 pistols, but like the convenience of the PCP and being able to fill it and forget it and not have to remember to degas and remove the CO2 cartridge for storage.

I can't believe how incredibly lightweight it is!  I just wish it came with better iron sights, the black on black is really hard on my old eyes!  I'd love to find a set of fiber optic sights that would work on it.  Since I plan on carrying it in a holster, a scope isn't very feasible.

I ended up having to return the AP16 to PA because it got to the point it would no longer cock.  I'm not sure what was up, but at that price point, I wasn't going to mess with it and decided to just return it.

I received the replacement yesterday, tested the cocking mechanism, which feels much smoother, and filled it with air to check for leaks.  So far so good.  I also mounted a micro red dot, and compact LDC and some Pierce finger grips to add a little more grip.  Hopefully, I'll get a chance to shoot it later today.

A quick update on the AP16, the replacement is working great and the accuracy is amazing.  The black on black iron sights were tough on these old eyes, so I brightened them up a bit, which makes sight alignment much easier.

I can also confirm that standard 1911 grips fit it perfectly!  But, you have to use the Ataman grip screws because standard 1911 grip screws don't work

Where did you get that ldc and how effective is it at quieting things down? I have a 6 inch Weihrauch ldc in mine but that’s way too long

It’s a Huma Air MOD30 with just the base section. It’s only 2½”!long but does a great job of quieting it down.

Paul,
Man, that is a nice-looking little gun with plenty of power to take down the dangerous game in the yard.

I had bought these acrylic paint pens to paint the back side of pellets so they show better in videos.  I used this on both the front and rear sights as a base coat, then used a Phosphorescent green paint I had for the same purpose as a second coat on the rear sights to add some contrast.  I put a second coat of the Phosphorescent white on the front sight also.  Here are the links:
