A bit above your price point but a real keeper. The Diana 54. Recoiless action, highly accurate, powerful, easy to shoot. .22 would be choice for bigger game but a .177 would do very well on bird size game. About 18fpe easily over 20 with a bit of tuning. My "best" ever shot was a starling at about 30yds. Caught him mid call and put the pellet between his beak parts. No chips or dings. but back of head gone. Over 400 chipmunks at 17-25yds. Most head shots. A squirrel by accident. He stuck his head up where the chipmunk I was waiting for had just dropped down. OOPS! The newer D54 Air King Pro is a really good one. The T06 trigger is the current incarnation of Diana''s two-stage trigger provided on most, if not all, their OEM rifles. Previous versions were T01 and T05. Also good triggers but now found only in "older" Diana rifles.
Weihrauch HW95 fits that bill. In .177 I've killed 2 woodchucks this month. Never tried to shoot a dove in the head. But it is super accurate I'd say it's capable of that.
One was at 5 yards, a rushed and somewhat sloppy head shot but it was DRT with an FTT at about 780 fps. On Sunday, number 2, about 20-25 yards, I caught one walking on top of a 6 foot chain link fence (that was a first for me), Baracuda hunter extreme to the head (around 760 fps). I had to aim a little lower and further back than I wanted due to a leaf in the way, but still good placement. He didn't twitch, or flinch, just tipped over and fell off the fence. Unfortunately I didn't recover him because he fell on the other side of the fence into a very brushy area. I tried to find it, but once I stepped into that brush I got swarmed by mosquitos.
What do you do with them when you can recover? I’ve eaten some weird stuff but never a chuck.
Head shots are possible. FWB 127 @ 25 yards open sights.
