New To Me Flex .30!!
« on: July 20, 2021, 12:23:34 AM »
I just received my new (to me) Flex!!  Serial Number 30!!  I'm stoked!  I've wanted one since they first came out (and stupidly kept trying to build my own versions).  No major plans, just disassemble and clean, replace o-rings and a fresh paint job.  Planned work:

Smaller bottle- 420cc vs 500cc.  Better fit w/the barrel (Barrel is 16.5" OAL)
New grip (My favorite grip- MPA Enhanced Vertical Grip won't work.  Trigger's set too far back)
New butt-stock (haven't decided whether or not to make this one a folder- It's short as-is)
MAYBE a Cothran valve and MDS hammer

That's it for now.  I'll post some pics tomorrow.

I haven't posted any yet LOL  Here's a "before" picture.

I've ordered a new grip to try, since my FAVORITE grip won't work (Masterpiece Arms Enhanced Vertical Grip).  I've ordered a MDT Vertical Grip Premier, because it's adjustable forward and back.  I'm hoping there's enough adjustment to make trigger engagement more comfortable.  The trigger is set back a touch too far for my liking.

I'm excited as well.  It'll be a very simple build.  Also, a single color paint job.  I've ordered a Silent Thunder Ordnance Falx to try out on this build.  Lets see how it sounds.  More to come!

Well, I've got her mostly disassembled.  I've gotten to a good stopping point, and I'll either do a little more tonight, or simply continue tomorrow.

-  The tube is DEFINITELY bespoke to the Flex- it's not just a Brod tube.
-  I've carefully bent the safety lever so it clears the main tube.  It would be cool if there were an extended version.  I think because all the pressure is put right on the tip of the safety lever, it bends the lever and it makes contact w/the tube eventually.  I MIGHT open up that side panel so I can engage the safety as it's designed to be.  I am NOT sure about this idea yet.

Anyone know of a source for those thicker than normal snap rings (cir-clip?) that WAR used?  I haven't gotten the barrel out yet, so I'm not sure of it's dimensions.  I was just wondering if any Flex owners knew off hand what snap ring (cir-clip) to buy for a .30 barrel.

I'm still looking for my snap-ring pliers  ::) ;D  I haven't gotten to stripping the breech just yet.

DON'T MIND THE MESS!!  I've got most of the other parts cleaned up though.  This is just initial stripping, I'll for sure clean all these parts better just before paint.  I'm going to cold blue the main tube, and not paint it.  Most everything else will be O.D. green.

Slowly but surely.  I'm going to make a new TP, the one in the gun has a few more beauty marks than I'd like to see.

I'm NOT going to put a folding adapter on this rifle.  I am going to use a MDT chassis stock I have in my parts bin though.  I will have to drill and tap for an anchor screw for the "buffer tube".

Tom, you're not kidding about that tube, that is thick! It must be a piece of oilfield drillstem or something.

yano, I didn't even notice how thick it was!  I'll throw some calipers on there and get a bad measurement to compare tubes...

I'm going to get some more work done on the gun today...

Looks like the snap ring that came with the gun is .05", and the 2nd washer is .03".  So altogether, I'll need a snap ring that's .08" thick.  I'm going to take a look at McMaster Carr to see what they've got.

Man!  So many little details in this gun!!  Here's some pics of the breech and barrel collar (not sure what else to call it):

It fits in the breech a little more loose than I'd like, I'm going to bed the collar into the breech so it's nice and tight.  It's got some nicks around the front end, so I'll carefully smooth it out and fill those in prior to bedding.

I cannot for the life of me find .08" thick snap rings.  I'll VERY carefully angle the barrel port as needed when using a .05" snap ring.  The .05" are readily available.  I only have to clearance the barrel port ever so slightly.  It'll be fiiiiiiiine.

That collar is supposed to be attached to the barrel it keeps it from twisting when you tension it. DONOT make it snug in the breech.

The collar will still attach to the barrel- I'm not changing anything.  Currently, there's enough play so there IS twist while tensioning.  Hence why I want to bed the collar to the breech, so there won't be any twisting...  Am I missing something?

Barrel port mod complete, looks gorgeous now.  I'll polish it up later.

Is there a list somewhere of all the o-ring sizes the Flex uses?  Duro ratings suggested?  I'm guessing it's 70 duro unless otherwise specified?
