Gamo 440 breech angle causes barrel droop?

Hi.
I have a couple of old Gamo 440's that seem to have the same problem:
-the face of the breech does not appear to be a flat 90°.
It causes downward barrel droop and weak lockup.
Have you encountered this problem?
If so, do you just re-angle the breech face?
Thanks!

You should be able to put one leg of a square on top of the barrel. The other leg should be square on the face of the breech. If the difference is not large you may be able to correct it with a flat file. Beyond that you may consider rigging up some kind of jig and a belt sander. Of course to get it perfectly square with minimal time spend you could always entrust it to a machine shop.

Thanks, RW.
I will use your technique to check for square and maybe give it a shot myself.
BTW, I set my first spring (for a b19) using the allthread rig you wrote about and it worked great.
Also For Your Consideration:
You may remember I PM'd you about your thoughts on thrust bearings awhile back.
I tested a thrust bearing in the same .177 b19 for which I mentioned setting a spring.
I shot at 9ish ft lbs for close to 1000 pellets and the thrust bearing seems fine.
Ironically , I only checked on the bearing because the mainspring broke.
Thanks again,
Matthew

I’ve got 2 20 year old Hunter 440’s that I still shoot to this day. I think the barrel droops ever so slightly on both, but the rifles still shoot very well for 20 year old, little maintained rifles. Haven’t ever seen a need to do something about it. YMMV.
