Title: Brass Washers
Post by: Paul68 on February 02, 2012, 06:02:47 PM
In putting my Storm back together, I just ditched the plastic barrel pivot washers, and turned down and polished a couple brass washers to replace them with. Less than 100 shots later, the brass is wearing and the barrel loosening. The screw is not backing out. Am I missing something?

i don't think you missed anything as long as when you put the barrel back in the fork with the brass shims it was really tight. i had a very hard time putting mine back together but that is a good thing in my opinion. anyway as you continue to fire and reload the rifle the washers actually ware in or break in and at some point it will not seem to be getting looser.......dave

Paul, why brass and what causes the wear, the breech block or hinge bolt/pin or both??

Brass washers will wear extremely fast if you do not use moly paste on them.

It should be a real pain in the rear to get the barrel back into the forks, no moly...no good.

I found, drilling small holes in the washers works much better.  They seem to hold longer and there are areas for the moly to stay put and keep everything lubed.  I think I used a 1/16" end mill to drill the holes in my washers.

I first put them in smooth and after about 50 rounds, the barrel was loose and would fall under its own weight.  I took them out and drilled the holes.  Now, I have about 300+ rounds through it and haven't had a need to tighten the breach bolt again.

I wondered if wearing in would be an issue since I haven't seen anyone mention it. I put a very smal bit of moly on them, but since I have to pull the assembly from the stock to retighten, I'll remoly them a little bit more and hopefully they settle in and maintain afterwards. Annoying since this thing was a shotgun to start, and after the tune was performing great and tightening right up, and now is loosening on the groups. I have 0 doubt the groups loosening is related, because the barrel lost pivot tension at the same time the groups began to grow.

Like Magman suggested Paul small drill hole's or cut's will help in keeping the lube in place an make for a longer lasting fit, if it keep's wearing on ya switch over to a bronze washer for your next set.

the brass washers should be thicker than the original plastic washer.
I made score lines from center out to edge for the lube. still holding great after 1500 rounds.
