MagntoSpeed Sporter Chronograph Review

I recently purchased the MagnetoSpeed Sporter Chrony to use with my air guns. MidwayUSA had it on sale so I thought I'd give it a try since it is small, looked to be easy to set up and does not need decent lighting to work. Since I shoot out my Office window, lighting is not alway adequate for my Gamma Chrony, and setting it up outside the window when shooting from indoors is a real PITA!
At first I was pretty disappointed because it did not work at all with any of the air guns I tried it on. I later found out that MagnetoSpeed does not recommend the Sporter for Air Gun Use, but the V3 was more than twice the price and well beyond my budget, so it was out of the question. I thought I'd be returning it to MidwayUSA, but then found a post on AGN where adding a couple small Rare Earth magnets to the sensors got it working. A trip to Harbor Freight got me a package of 10 magnets that were 5/16" diameter by ⅛" thick. Two of these stacked on each sensor did the trick and it seems to be working fine now.
I have used it on both my Gauntlet and Marauder and the measured FPS is within 5 fps of the reading on my Gamma Chrony, so for my purposes, that works. There are a couple draw backs to this little device though. For some reason it won't work when attached to my Rocker1 LDC attached to my Marauder. When I remove the LDC and attach it to the shroud, it works fine. The difference in diameter of the LDC and Marauder shroud is only 2.5mm, so that doesn't seem like much of a difference.
The other draw back is attaching it to PCPs that have air tubes that that sit right on top of the barrel and the barrel does not extend beyond the air tube enough to attach the chrony. But, I can live with this because the MagnetoSpeed is small enough to through in a range bag so I can let friends use it one their air rifles, and most seem to favor Marauders!
I also picked up the MagnetoSpeed XFR to transfer the data from the Chrony to my laptop, via my iPhone. It's compact and works well with an Apple Stereo jack to Lighting adapter. The exported file is easily imported to Excel for further review/analysis.
All in all, I like it, just know going in that you will need to grab some inexpensive rare earth magnets if you plan on using it for air gun use.
