First Good art On New Machine

FINALLY !!!
After MANY samples/attempts, I finally produced the FIRST good part on my Hardinge DSM-59 Second Op Lathe.
It took some time to come to grips with the adjustments to the different tools.
There are 4 operations, and adjusting the turret tools and cross slide tools was not always intuitive...at least not to me...
Each needed a Z-axis setup. Then 3 of the 4 needed depth settings, some by cross slide travel adjustment; 2 by adjusting knee tool holders.
Seems like I would get close, then over-correct the fine tuning, etc......
Or I adjusted screws in the wrong direction.
Anyway, Now that I have the first good part, I will see how well I can make the machune live up to its legendary precision and repeatability.....
I still need to set up a stock stop to set the feed....
Fingers crossed.....

I'll give that a look-see.
I don't manufacture in high enough volume to go screw machine. and not sufficient
funds to go CNC.
The Hardinge is a very accurate and quick manual platform.
It just took a while to understand the setup.
I do need to change my coolant, however. From oil to diesel.

Just posted that link to give you some references to how turret type lathe tools are setup. Not that you should buy a screw machine. My apologies for not being clear. Box turners, knee tools, swing tools, geometric die heads, combination starter / chamfer drills to name a few are common to both. I used to run production turret lathes, screw machines, and cnc lathes at one time. I have some Good factory training books packed away. I believe that there are a lot of good setup techniques in them that help to understand the intended use of tools. I will look to see if there is some literature that would be helpful to you.
We used to use sulfurized lard oil for coolant, which works extremely well.

I will find some good info on setup there no doubt.
Thanks!
I am turning aluminum, mostly 6061 T6, but am trying 2011....
Diesel fuel has been suggested by a friend......

I am liking the Hardinge.........
Takes me about a minute to make a part that used to take 3 or 4..........
And every part is exactly like the one before it....and after it....
Of course, it will never pay for itself, but who cares..........
