Picked up a Daisy 717 today

I've wanted a Daisy 717 or preferably a 747 for a couple years now. Picked up this 717 today. It had a pretty good amount of dust on it. It must have been sitting on a shelf for a long time but no rust and the finish is pretty good. Shot it as soon as I got it home. It seemed weak but oiling up the foam washer and O ring helped quite a bit.

Put it over a chronograph. Mine was slow at only 200fps when purchased and I ordered a kit, but after a clean, lube and adjustment, others confirmed the 368fps I m getting is spot on. I’ll save the kit till needed.
FWIW - My 747 has got to be the quietest air pistol I’ve ever shot.
Enjoy

I keep saying I gotta get a chrono and one of these days I'm a gonna get one. I know the experts here will help guide me to the appropriate choice.
I've noticed on the firing line that the Daisies are the quietest guns compared to the PCP and SSP target guns.

My 717 seems to hold full pressure overnight-good sign. But one odd thing I've noticed is, the first pump always seems too easy and if fired after one pump, the air blast is weak. If I only pump it once I can also visually see the pellet drop on the way to the target. However, if I pump it twice, the second pump is much harder and the air blast is much more powerful and the velocity seems normal for this sort of pistol. Not very SSP like behavior.

I took one of my 777's out for a quick try, It's probably been close to a year since I shot it. First shot seemed as good as next few, based on the way it was making soda cans jump. It is quite compared to a lot of other pellet guns, and heavy, the 777 has a milled steel cocking lever , big wooden target grips and a fantastic steel rear sight, making it weigh in at close to a pound more than the 747. When I got it I rebuilt completely, with polyurethane o rings, new valve, and the kit had some split teflon rings to use in place of a foam wiper, I think it uses 5 or six, kind of like piston rings in an car engine. Stacked in the groove for the foam ring somewhat loosely, they hold a good bit of oil to keep the cylinder relatively wet with oil and no chance of foam particles getting into the valve.

Was it an easy rebuild?

Yes, replacing all the O rings and valves is easy. I also cleaned and relubed the trigger parts. Tricky part if I remember correctly was aligning a trigger bar that extends up so the bolt can cock it. Look on you tube and i there are som clips on rebuilding. After I had done a couple, I could do one in about 20 minutes. Just watch the order in which the parts come off, the cocking lever blocks in the end of the compression tube, and the orientation of the tube to the barrel, Unless you try to take the trigger unit apart is is really a very simple gun.

maybe this will help

Thanks, I might have to reseal mine as my 717 exhibits some odd pumping behavior. When I fairly quickly open and close the pump lever, it builds pressure and fires normally. If I open and close the pump lever slowish, it does not build pressure at all, or a much lessor amount. If after this slow pumping I pump it a second time, there's a little more than normal resistance and the power seems greater than normal. I can live with this odd little quirk for now but I'm really curious if this is at all normal.

That does not sound normal. Considering the age of those guns, a resealing/replacement of all the 0 rings and possibly the valve will probably help.

I guess I'll be ordering another seal kit. This sounds like an easy repair so I might actually complete it.

It really is rather easy, no springs to go flying into who knows where. Just get some good silicone grease to use on the 0 -rings as you install them. I actually found the most difficult was that small one on the bolt probe.

One thing to keep in mind when just replacing the valve. Most of the valves in rebuild kits actually have a slightly different face than the older original valves. The newer ones have more of a tapered face on them which works fine if replacing the whole valve assembly. If you just use a new valve in the old assembly the original valve seat is round like a ball and the new valve may not seal well enough or you may get lucky and it seals. I just replace the whole valve assembly by pressing out the barrel from the old assembly and pressing it into the new one.(a heat gun helps) It isn't that expensive to replace the whole assembly but sure is easier than tearing it apart again and trying another replacement valve. Also if you need to replace the little ball bearing in the safety you can get them way cheaper from McMaster Carr.
