Title: Sacramento Valley FIELD TARGET ( SVFTC ) 2023 Newsletter and Events
Post by: Motorhead on February 04, 2023, 02:48:34 PM
Happy New year to ALL Sac Valley Air Gun Club participants & those who may wish in joining us this 2023 season at the Sacramento shooting center located @ IONE Ca.
As previous years, we shoot at RANGE #9 on the 4th Sunday of each month from @ *March threw October.  ( *weather pending )
Set up generally starts @ 7:30 to 8:00 with match getting under way @ 9:30 or so ...

This years 2023 dates for SVFTC Air Gun FIELD TARGET Matches are:
*Mar  26
*April  23
*May  28
*June  25
*July  23
*August  27
*Sept  24
*Oct  22

As re recap:
Field target rifles / pistols are limited to a MAXIMUM 20 fpe in the game of AAFTA Field target at these events. Thus having higher power guns unable to be shot during field target events.  What specific AAFTA class your shooting in may have specific limitations on power Optics X power or Support , sitting aids etc .. one may use.
So if in doubt of AAFTA rules for specific class's please read the handbook or reach out to myself or others we shoot with for further information.
( THIS IS FOR THOSE WHO WISH TO FOLLOW AAFTA RULES and are going to shoot Field target outside club events )

Ok now whats CHANGING for 2023

As an Air gun club traditionally playing the game of FIELD TARGET by AAFTA rules.  When the club was formed @ 10 years ago the founding members along with a large contingent also shot at away matches, Gran Prix events, Nationals etc ...

We find our self's this many years later having more shooters than ever with a striking difference .... Most shooting with us now ONLY seem to shoot club Fun Matches either at Sac Valley or Diablo in the bay area.
Those of us who still travel & compete outside clubs event are strictly tied to AAFTA class rules and abide by them to the letter.

SO here is where it gets more fun and accommodating for many in our ranks at SVFTC club events ...

Without getting political, there has been a class many have tried threw the years attempting to get the AATFA approval.  It has failed to be so and remains a NON SANCTIONED class ... BUT WE ARE GOING TO OFFER IT At SVFTC Club Events !!  UNLIMITED is the name many were trying to adopt and it is a fitting name.

We will operate within the AAFTA overall guide lines ( yes 20fpe max ) BUT NO LIMITATIONS on the mixing and matching of gear, shooting aids, optics, seating etc ....
So Now if you wish to sit on a Bucket / seat, use shooting sticks and have a 50X scope, use holdover or click  you can !!  Slings, Palm rests, Butt hooks, Thigh rests etc ...
ANY MIX & MATCH of AAFTA legal Gear / Equipment may be used in UNLIMITED.

Next subject ...
Starting this year ALL the club match equipment and support gear will be ON SITE behind large ship containers at range 6 where blocks have been all along.  Now blocks are on a trailer, targets, winders & clamps, paints etc in a smaller locked steel enclosure along side them. * Both will be chained and locked.

Target maintenance, repair & painting WILL HAPPEN AFTER EACH MATCH with everything returned to storage ready for the next months match.
It will be encouraged to help out in doing the target repair / painting and with many willing should happen quickly and painlessly .... THANK YOU in Advance !

Those who will be running / match directing any given SVFTC matches threw the season/s will have keys to gain access.

Another Subject ....
We're an AIR GUN club .. Yes we are, tho we are lacking in diversity of the Games one can play shooting air guns.  Only the Field Target game is limited to 20 fpe limitations and the shooting of our clubs knock down targets.

As stated at a few events in 2020 WE CAN PLAY other Games, Other Target Types, Higher Power, Further Distances etc being Far More Inclusive to more Air gunners in general.  But we need LEADERSHIP from others to step up and spearhead this effort ! ....
Scott Schneider runs & Match Directs the Field target activities with the clubs help.
WHO WANTS TO STEP UP and talk about setting some other Air Gun related activities with Clubs help ?
* This could happen after a FT match as a same day second event ( we have had folks stay after and screwing around for years BTW ) Or if in time such an event became more fun than FT it could be a semi monthly activity alternating with FT ?

Anywho .... been an interesting winter and the SVFTC is about to get started once more.
The 1st Match of the year ( Hopefully March ) with be our JIM CYRAN Memorial match which we stared last year with Jims passing.   Not planning on a huge food fest, we will have food, but if some would like to do a little something extra for the clubs benefit I'm all ears to have that conversation.

Thank you for your time in reading this, and may we see you this 2023 season for some kick azz Field target & more with many great people !!

May 23rd .. Match #3 for the SVFTC Field Target season shot at the Sacramento Valley Shooting Center IONE California.
What a nice day !!! Spring is waning with green grasses going golden brown. We have temps still hanging low to upper 60's over mostly blue sky. Todays breezes stayed light but were switchy giving a bit more challenge in reading and doping it correctly. ( Such is IONE )
We are keeping up the 60 shot format with todays targets widely scattered in range, most trended generous & IMO felt a cleanable field if you got your MoJo working.
Appears the trend of spring time chores or a vacation was Not keeping shooters from attending on the Memorial Weekend .. WHOA we have 26 hooligans wanting to knock down the steel quarry !! We had so many folks today we needed to stall the start allowing the late comers some practice time. We had 3 NEW SHOOTERS join us today brought out by fellow SVFTC shooters. This is GREAT !!! We get started just before 10:00 after the shooters meeting with a strong statement of lets keep it moving along ... Everyone did just that & we get done by @ 1:30 there about.

What a wonderful spring we have had ! The nice weather just continues and we're dang near in July ... Love it !!!!
With a cool morning starting @ 7:30 am a few of us started the days course set up doing some change ups on our typical positioning of targets.
As the group starts showing up we get more help and we're soon done with our 60 shot / 15 lanes of steel quarry placement.
LOL ... yea as mentioned every report that comes from the IONE Experience the light wind is blowing even before we get practice started ... It stays light tho kinda switchy kepping everyone on there guard in being aware which way & strength threw out the match.
Today at the time of Match getting going we have 22 shooters ready & willing to get after it .... So we do just that after a brief safety meeting.

The Scores by CLASS & Finish Position XX/60

As a Note of mention ... @ mid match it was announced that due to winds present, that after you took your two shots on a target ( For Score ) and having had trouble hitting said target ( "dang" it ! ) You could take a few extra shots and play with HOLD OFF required to actually connect & knock the target down. It is in such conditions that one needs to LEARN that being safe & inside the KZ simply does not work in all situations & one must explore Shooting outside the KZ to knock em down.
As is becoming a trend ... our more experienced & wind savvy shooters are still by in large setting the top scores. The real stand out was WFTF PCP with those 3 really switching it up for the days reckoning of man against steel. Another our fearless MD chose to shoot an FT pistol on the rifle course today.

The crew quickly picked up all the targets, stacked the bricks in piles to be picked up from the field. Bricks went onto the trailer & over to the storage area, targets came back to the covered shooting area & received LOTS of fresh paint ... Lol This PAINT & STORE targets on site is really working well & want to THANK all those who stayed around to do this.
We're all wrapped up by @ 1:30

After we are all done about 8-9 stay after to just screw around and shoot other air guns. This continued to @ 4:00 pm with those present continuing to laugh and have a good time.

UNTIL NEXT MONTH where the SVFTC once again converges at the Sacramento Shooting Centers Range #9 on July 23rd .... Stay well, practice until we do it again !!!

Title: Sacramento Valley FIELD TARGET ( SVFTC ) July 2023 Match Report
Post by: R1lover on July 26, 2023, 01:39:40 PM
July 23rd marked the 5th match of the SVFTC 2023 Field Target season shot at the Sacramento Valley Shooting Center, IONE California.

Twenty-two shooters were in attendance on this typical WARM July day.  Earlier in the week the match daytime high was predicted to reach 107 degrees and consideration was given to shortening the course from the normal 60 shots to 40 shots so as not to cause us oldsters heat stress but, as is often the case, forecasters missed the mark (in our favor this time) and the day started off at a pleasant 68 degrees with a predicted high of 100 degrees so a 60 shot course was set.  It was 98 degrees by 1:00 pm when things were wrapping up..... quite tolerable under the barn-sized recreational vehicle style aluminum cover over the shooters.

According to the internet the breeze in Ione on Sunday was around 3 mph at the start of the match peaking at around 8 mph mid match and dropping back to 5 mph by match end, however, the American flag was noticed standing out in fully display from the flag pole near the club house at times so maybe we had gusts to a bit more. While the breeze was nothing out of the ordinary apparently the course may have been as scores were generally lower than normal and one experienced shooter commented that "a good course" (i.e., challenging) was set.  Blame that on novice course-setters Chris K and Marty G who took the reigns while Match Director Scott S was away, extending his Oregon vacation following the Oregon State Grand Prix held in Ashland the weekend before.  Fred B acted as match director for Sunday.

Sunday's match saw the return of a few shooter we haven't seen in a bit and the absence of a few who attended the Oregon match the weekend before.

New-to-SVFTC this season were shooters Weiye, Grant S and Cameron W.  Cameron W made a strong showing and took 3rd place in Hunter PCP.

Lonnie S, always the gentleman and consummate WFTF PCP performer had high match score with 54.  Cameron K. was high score in the  challenging WFTF Piston class with 47 and Chris K. had high score in Hunter PCP with 51.  Marty G, who was one of the first two to arrive and take gear out of the on-site gear box, load it into vehicles, take it out to the range and set up the course let nothing slow him down, finishing only two shots off the lead in Hunter PCP for second place.

Only one shooter demonstrated questionable judgment at Sunday's match.  Martin O'Connor, FT match director at Diablo Rod and Gun Club in Concord, decided to bring his PCP pistol to the rifle match.  Kind of like bringing a knife to a gunfight.  Mr. O' placed 1st, 2nd and "only" in the pistol category with more than 50% of his targets knocked down.

Plenty of help was present to set up and tear down the course and lots of folks demonstrated their artistic talents with paint and brush in hand to spruce up faceplates and paddles after the match.  Not everyone colored inside the lines but that's okay because we're just gonna shoot all that paint off at the next match anyway, loll

Here we are late summer and a LOT going on in the FT universe, The WFTF world championship is South Africa, Pyramid Cup in Ohio yet we manage to draw in 21 shooters this August 27th Sunday. * We have 2 frequent SVFTC shooters in SA this event Cameron k & Lonnie S whom both are on the USA national team !!!

We get started just past 7:00 am with an early gathering of the required gear from our on site storage area. About 4 of us get going from lane one and go on down the lanes setting 2 targets each for ( 40 shots ) Lanes 11 to 14 we set 3 targets per lane & shooting these remaining at ONE shot per target for 12 more shots. ( 52 in total )
Good bit of practice getting the crew to get some one shot experience .... yea a tad more mental game.
Practice runs a good 45 minuets as late comers stroll in finally getting practice finished up @ 9:30 Shooters meeting, Accolades said on the success of Cameron K & team USA in Africa ;)

We have minimal winds / breeze, yet there still there if paying attention and as such POI is indeed differing from POA enough to warrant some adjustment. As the match goes on this skill or lack of by the shooters present starts showing on the face plates . Yup ... read what happening and correct MORE so than those before you, or not ? Lol what a game !!!

As we had stated a couple weeks ago .. With Cameron K's big win at the WFTF Worlds last month that the SVFTC would honor his accomplishment by having a special club match this month.  A news letter went out to the members at large asking for those who had them .. SHOOT A SPRINGER at this match.  All said of the 20 persons present we got 6 to take on the steel FT quarry ( Cameron among them ) with rifles that go BOING !!!!

Todays set up was full 15 lanes, 2 targets per lane with 2 shots per target for a 60 shot total.  Lane 15 was offhand for 4 shots on our infamous Bell targets.  Thud or Ding !!
The early crew showed up and helped get everything done prior to practice, which lasted @ 1/2 hour as the last minuet stragglers rolled in.
Gathered up the boyz and spoke of Camerons success abroad, he spoke giving all a personal perspective for a spell.  Shooters meeting and we're off & shooting a tad past 9:30

What an interesting day,  6:30 am and it is just starting to rain here in the foothills & while driving out to the more valley situated Range we drive out from under the weather.
Our day starts off cloudy & humid but no rain at the Sac Valley Shooting Center !!!

We have a pretty good group assembled before 8am with able & willing bodies eager to get set up.  This month the MD just assigns set X lane between @ 4 individuals allowing them to pick placement and size KZ appropriate to the distance.  We get 15 lanes of 2 per set up with an extra bell target ( 3 ) making for a 62 shot match.
As a giggle shared during match it was asked .. When did the Club Acquire SO MANY No kill zone size targets ?   We'll assume that being a comment on the difficulty present at today's SVFTC club / Fun match  :o

After getting the match targets in place, check overall layout and placement the crew gets to practice for a 1/2 hour or so.  We get no stragglers making squading and general speed to get the match going easy peezy.   We have 22 shooters, very shoot-able weather, near calm winds as we start our semi informal match by @ 9:30 after a shooters meeting.
