Can we look into lodging that is a bit closer to the shoot than it was this year?

I'm open to any suggestions Bob. Give me some facilities and we can certainly take a look. The River Lodge seemed to be comfortable and have great amenities. As well as places close to buy whatever supplies folks needed. Everything there is spread out and small. As you probably saw. We can definitely look at suggestions and see what we can do.

I am going to start looking for a small motor home to rent for the trip. We will also allow two days for travel each way from Long Island. That nonstop 22 hours in the car was painful .  :'( :'( ;D ;D

The short list for lodging close to the shoot/show...

Salem to the shoot is about 10-15 minutes, Cottonwood being closer than Southfork Lodge.

The others are located right in Horseshoe Bend which is just a few minutes to the shoot.

Cottonwood Inn Salem, AR

South Fork Lodge also in Salem, AR

Cedar Glade Resort in Horseshoe Bend

Crown Point Resort also in Horshoe Bend

Just drop me a line and I can scout anything else out for you fellas. I’m working on some new stuff for the next shoot. Mainly a night shoot.

Eric

I stayed at the Crown Point resort with my son for this years GTA fun shoot. My stay there was very pleasant and I would recommend staying there to others without hesitation.

It is EXTREMELY important that the BOB's get there before Jeff.  I beat him by a few hours two years ago and he hasn't slept since.  He is at his best with no sleep.

We pulled in about 2PM on Wednesday last year and hope to be able to do the same this time around.  Retirement has its consequences (seems I heard "something" like that before).

So if Eric concurs, it is race on.

Just a quick update on the progressive planning for the event. Eric and I are tossing a lot of ideas back and forth and could use some input. The event seems to be even more fun each year so we want to keep that going.
I have asked Umarex to attend in any capacity. They are relatively close in Ft. Smith so I hope to get a positive response from them.
As for activities, here are a few things we are thinking about.
The firing line will most definitely change from last year. It will be much larger and easily accessible. You COULD drive right to it last year but with it being shifted (along with fences being shifted) you will be able to back right up to your shooting position. Eric will be setting up more tents for the firing line. Awesome....
Some of the other ideas need your thoughts and suggestions. There is no need for doing a lot of prep and setup if there will be minimum participation. We want to stay focused on what YOU want to participate in. We want it to be FUN!!!!
Anyway, we are considering setting up a FT event. Still a fun event, not a for national points or anything. My main thought on it was to introduce folks to FT shooting and what it is all about. I want to learn. I've never dealt with nor attended an FT event myself, so I'm interested in seeing and shooting one. If there is enough interest, we will try to get some experienced members, or even a shooting club, to help set up and manage the event. It will be set up as a learning and fun event.
We are also thinking of the kids. We are debating setting up something supervised for the kiddos to shoot a sort of competition amongst them. It would be a good time to get them gun safety lessons and airgun familiarization. I'm just not sure how many teen and below shooters we would have. So I'm not sure on this event, I need input.
Eric is excited after seeing us last year. That is great!!! He has been tossing this idea around even before last year. With all of his spare time concentrating on building the fantastic bridge, he didn't have time for much else. But he says the evenings out there in May were quite nice. Some folks stayed after hours and sat around a fire and even did some shooting. He is tossing around the idea of a well illuminated night shoot. With airguns as well as pb's. :)
Some of us did shoot pb's after the event. It was fun. But Eric has generators and is thinking of stringing up LED lighting for a night time range.
Thoughts???
Eric is in contact with the local lodging folks and is trying to secure the waterfront cabins as well as the one on the golf course for us. And to get us a discount rate. These facilities are just down the road from the event. Even if they don't reserve the entire place for us, I will be staying in one of the lakefront cabins myself.
That's about it for now. Eric will chime in with more info and updates. Hope to see all of you there. Jump on with your thoughts and ideas, let's ,make 2019 the best event yet!!!!

Another vote for FT.  Our club is preparing to start its own FT events and has acquired about 20 targets.  We might be able to help create an event at the GTA shoot if another club doesn't step up.

Our club has both indoor shooting events and occasional outdoor fun shoots.  Our fun shoot last weeked had a 9yo shooter brought by her parents to the event for her first experience shooting an airgun.  She used a Hatsan Alpha - great size for a youth shooter.

My kids really like a shooting stand that I had copied from a prior event - gluing plastic animals, cars and candy to a wooden shelf.  Hundreds of targets and the kids can call - "Let's get Darth Vader".  A great use for those old kid toys....

Here are a few photos from our prior event showing the target idea and how much fun youth shooters can have!

Thanks fellas for the support. More ideas, more, more!!

This year, since the bridge project is done, I have much more  time to step it up for the next shoot/Show.

Another option I thought would be fun is to set up a competition using the “know your limits” target systems I have. They were down range at the last shoot and seemed to get good feedback from shooters. These KYL targets we’re not used as they were intended in competition. I have three to use. If they were set out say...one at 50yrds, then 30 and maybe at 15. Respectively we could have three different challenges to shoot competivley. The 50yrd one could be bench shooting. The 30yrd could be a total freehand challenge and the 15yrd could be for springers..... Now say a competitor lays down a couple bucks for a round and the winner or winners get a payout percentages from 1st to third place? I have an extra car port type tent that should work nicely for this to keep shooters shaded. This could even be placed at a separate area on the line or off to the side of the field. There is plenty of area now that the firing line is moved.

Now for the FT idea portion of the shoot/Show. I like to call it a “jungle walk”. Location>>>>For those who were at the firing line last May, the beginning of the proposed FT pathway would be West of the old firing line at the top of the hill next to the old watering pond. This is across the webwire fence about 100 yards from the old line. (There is going to be a gate placed in the webwire for easy access) There is an old roadway there that continues West for at least 200-225yards in the woods. This has woods on both sides of this roadway. There is even a creek snaking thru there to use somehow for some really interesting target challenges. Shooting direction would be totally opposite of the new firing line....making it totally safe for BOTH the main line and this event to happen simultaneously independent of each other. I thought one side of the roadway could be one type of competition and the other side another.....maybe one side a shorter range timed pistol competition? The other side rifle?  Each side of this roadway can easily ave 50 yard target challenges....truly open ended options here.

I’ve never been to any FT air rifle event....ever. I’m as green to this as they come. I have been to many other shooting events with PB firearms including personally competed in sub machinegun competitions, so some of that experience fuels my ideas. I have no clue if we need to keep to some sort of regulation FT format or we build our own event that may set a trend. All feedback wanted on this. Don’t let me sit on my butt all winter until spring comes to get something going here. I’m open to any and all thoughts here....winter is long and I if I can build a 90 foot clear span bridge in 4 months what can I do all winter long????

I'm interested in the FT event, just hope it is handicapped friendly as I have trouble walking very far or being on my feet for very long. If not I will still enjoy the regular shooting range, had fun last year and plan to make it again God willing.

FT would be *SWEET*, but the lightest shooter I have is a 36 FPE, .22 Marauder...:)

Are you bringing the RimfireCentral folks along again this year Dez? Is there any rimfire shooting?

Thanks,
Douglas

Douglas, the rimfire guys and gals are invited and I'm sure Eric will drop them a message again. But with 250 acres, we will most definitely be shooting rimfire, especially after normal hours of the event. We did some of that last year on Sunday. But we can and probably will set up an adjacent range for pb shooting.
You thinking of driving down from MI? That would be kewl.

Would love to have him join us too.
I brought my dressed up 10-22 last year and enjoyed shooting it. Maybe we can persuade Eric to break out a Gatling gun.

Merry Christmas fellas!!

Lodging, RV camping, night shoot, FT shoot, and FOOOOooooood!!!

I have been doing some homework and have a partial update for the upcoming shoot/Show.

We found a nice little 3500 watt inverted generator set. It should work nicely to run the night shoot lighting setup. This unit runs sooooo nice and quiet. The steel has been bought for the light poles. I still need to fab them up for each one to hold a pair of floods. I just need to pull the trigger on the LED lights themselves. I’m thinking two 500 watt units plus one small watt unit for each light pole should cover field of view plus working light on the line. So the field should be lit as well as softer lighting for the shooter spots.

I recently took a walk down the pathway for the proposed  “jungle walk” or “field/target” part of the shoot. This is really a nice long path with so many possibilities. I’ll get some rangefinder data so you all can get an idea of what this thing could be. I really need to get with someone or a group who has experience with actual FT event details to set this up properly. I have no idea if this needs to be designed to mimic official FT range specifics or are we pioneering our own thing here. Someone who is in my area and knowledgeable in FT competitions, contact me and let’s get this planned out. Otherwise I’ll design something totally unrelated for just the fun of it. Maybe something timed and scored as a walk through type shoot. Anyway, get me some thoughts on this as the present weather is perfect for the outside work of clearing paths and shooting lanes for is. Also if anyone local to me wishes to lend a hand, contact me.

Lodging....closest to the shoot.

I stopped in at Cedar Glade Resort right here in Horseshoe Bend. 7 minutes or 3.2 miles from the Expo Center.
They have a total of 28 rooms for us. 16 suites @ 70.00 group range per night. 12 regular rooms @60.00 per night group rate. WiFi available. They have a website to view details and pics of their facility. Www.cedargladeresort.com (http://Www.cedargladeresort.com)
There is an 18 hole golf course attached to this resort for 20.00 for 18 holes and 9.00 cart rent....sounded pretty cheap to me!! They have 2 RV hook ups with 30 and 50 amp plugs. 25.00 per night.

The next place we have local is on Crown Lake in Horseshoe. This is 13 minutes or 6.1 miles from the Expo Center.  This place is called Boxhound Marina. They have entire cabins on the lake to rent. They have 2  cabins that sleep 4 with a pull out used. Also they have 2 cabins that sleep 6 with a pull out used. They are complete with stoves, microwaves, pots, pans fridge, etc. You can view their site at https://www.boxhoundmarina.com (https://www.boxhoundmarina.com). No WiFi. They also have RV hookups but all are booked except for 2 at the time I spoke with them. They were priced at 25.00 per night per 2 occupants. The website shows costs and pictures of the cabins.

For those who were at the show last year, I will again offer camping by the lake west of the Expo. This is a primitive spot with No power or water (other than the lake). The two porta-jons will remain for those campers.  I have a lakeside campfire ring and firewood for your use. If you are into primitive camping, this may be for you. The camp site is within 100 yards of the new firing line. GTA fellas can bring a 4 wheeler, golf cart, SXS, to travel back and forth through the facilities.

The next place I’m working on is Crown Point resort also in town on the lake. This place has everything you all would need from restaurant, pool, hot tub, bar, and nice lodging. I haven’t received final word back yet with all details. They also have new RV hookups being made this fall. Too much fresh info to relay yet. They are also a timeshare enterprise so reserving lodging can get tricky at the start of the season. I’ll post more as I know it.

There also is another nice place located in the neighboring town of Salem, AR right on the highway called Cottonwood Inn. It is probably 15 minutes and 10 miles from the Expo. The have a site and they were open to group discounts last year when I inquired. http://www.cottonwoodinnmotel.com/ (http://www.cottonwoodinnmotel.com/) I have not spoken to them directly but can if a group thing is needed.

Now...a new discovery for this May.....FOOD on the firing line!!!

I get along well with our local grocery store owner and he recently acquired a double Rotisserie roaster in his store. He is presently doing whole chickens, pork chops, and ribs. I asked if he could deliver on the line....YUP! He also is a Hunts Brothers pizza vendor and can deliver that too.  He would be willing to build a sample platter like ribs, pizza and chicken for a GTA deal.
How cool would it been to get your eats on the line!!!

Any and all comments and suggestions are needed.....bigger and better is the goal here.

Eric

Excellent updates Eric, many thanks!!!
I will hold out and see what you can do for the cabins. I prefer those if possible. Second choice will be Cedar Glade. We looked at it last year and thought it would be nice. But not as close to amenities as the lodge was we stayed at last year. But a LOT closer to the event!!!
As for the FT course, I have been chatting some with Tyler about it. Not sure of the timed deal but what he informed me of was they usually have a minimum of 30 stations that have two resettable targets per station. Set at different ranges from 10-55 yards. Two shots per target. Highest course score wins. I would like to stick somewhat to an official setup so this would serve as fun but a learning experience also. I've never attended or shot in an FT event. Hopefully we will have some folks that HAVE shot in an event that will volunteer to help us tweak the lanes. This could be a blast.
The night shoot sounds like fun too. MANY thanks for all of your time and effort to make this coming event the best ever.
The food possibilities are an interesting touch too. We will still have the GTA furnished meal for Saturday lunch. I hope the same fellow and crew can do the job again. They did a fantastic job last year!!! And his winning a drawing topped it off for him. LOL
But having food available is a great idea considering everything is kinda isolated there and several miles apart. Having food delivered is a great plus. I like Hunt Brothers pizza, I have a breakfast pizza every Friday morning. LOL
Thanks again Eric, give me a call or drop me an email if you need to chat about anything.
See you all there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Update 12/25/18....

I just got back from a little walk with the rangefinder this afternoon. The proposed jungle walk is really looking great for any type of walk thru field/target needs. The entrance to the wooded roadway is facing due west, away from the main line, and is perfectly safe from separate firing from any other firing line. The F/T roadway goes west for approx 65 yards then gradually bends southwest. There’s is another 36 yards of bend, then it straightens out for another additional 80 yards. We basically have about 180 yards of roadway to walk down....and it actually does slope downward as it goes the length of the 180 yards. Should be easy to navigate no mater how out of shape the shooter might be  ;) Both sides of the roadway can be used for engaging targets. I can see endless challenges and scenarios at all appropriate ranges. >>>>>>really would like to have a pro who is local to me to come check it out and cultivate some ideas on this<<<<<<<

The next update is for the actual spot where the main firing line will be. Today’s walk-about made it clear that the firing line would be best suited a bit further north and about 75 yards west of where I initially thought. Reason being the spot found today is very level and the view slopes downward to all targets down range. The addition of having a row of tall trees directly behind the line will shield all of us from the sun nicely. There is plenty of room for shooters to drive up to their shooting spot and park. There is a raised terrace that lasers right at the 50 yard range too!! The full depth of range from this spot is at 330 yards, give or take, using the whole length of the field.

From the main firing line, the entrance to the jungle-walk or F/T range is just 100 yards away.

More later....and again>>>>>>contact me if you are local and can brainstorm on the layout of the jungle walk.<<<<

On the FT course, the 'official' ones end at 55 yards of range. that leads to, IMO, scores in the mid to upper 50's out of 60. Is there any reason not to create a course that will result in some tears? 80 yard maximum for the 'third' target? difference in drop from 75 to 80 yards is easily more than a target's height...(evil grin)

Also, is it possible to get some tougher targets so we can attack them with .25's? Now don't get me wring, attacking an 80 yard distant target with a 12 FPE, .177 will probably leave me spectating. As would a 20 FPE limit...but it could be you could sell tickets so we could watch folks wrap rifles around trees upon missing...LOL
cheers,
Douglas

A "true hunter class" would be awesome! I would certainly give it a go if it were .25 compliant.

Here’s a Facebook page for those who wish to cruise around and see what they have to offer.

Basically Crown Point is a one stop Resort. Bar, restaurant, pool, hot tub, exercise room, meeting room....and lake side views. And ......close to the shoot. For 5ose who would like to go back to their room and recharge and come back out for the night shoot, this would be ideal. Cedar Glade is also top notch but without the bar and restaurant.....equally close to the show too.

More later.

I can vouch for this place I stayed there for the last Fun Shoot my single had a king size bed and comfortable pull out couch for my adult son to sleep on clean and spacious. Our room overlooked the boat dock and had a nice view of the lake.

I forgot to mention....a negotiated cut price per room for the GTA group with possibly 25 units will be available or more. All units can sleep 4 to 6, so there can be shared accommodations for those in larger groups.  I’m working with the manager today to get all details for the offer worked out.

I really appreciate all of Eric's work and effort to make our Fun Shoot an event to remember. And I'm certain all that attend will appreciate his efforts too!!!
I for one will pick Crown Point as my first choice. After that, Teresa and I don't mind a little drive if the stay is worth it. So if Crown Point doesn't work out, we will once again stay at the Spring River Lodge. It has very comfortable and clean rooms at an excellent price. Close to other things like grocery, eating, dry goods and other shopping. They have a good continental breakfast and only 15 miles from the Expo Center. The staff are outstanding also.
Anyway, it seems we have several choices this year, thanks to Eric!!!!
PLENTY of room and great accommodations so please come out and enjoy the GTA family event.

That's the good thing about Spring River Lodge...The eateries are nearby.  I'm thinking if we stay at the lodge, we will still be driving back to town for dinner, but there is a buffet style place halfway and others too.  Either one works for me.  I do like the idea of staying on the water and being close-in to the shoot.

Thanks Eric and Dave for all the fine planning for us!

What is the distance from the fun shoot event to Crown Point? When I tried doing a google map search, it brought up Crown Point Tn, no the Arkansas resort.

5 miles to the Expo from Crown Point Resort.

FYI....the resort has a very nice restaurant on site with adult beverages. All walking distance from your rooms. The restaurant is called “Papa Dicks”. Great hand tossed, oven baked pizzas.

And I've about decided that Teresa and I will stay at Spring River Lodge again this year. I don't mind a 15 minute drive and the place is fantastic. And saves us $20 (or more) per night. I'm talking to Ashley (the manager) tomorrow evening to set up the GTA group discount again in case anyone else wants to join us there.

I've put up 2 polls we need input on. First one is a head count of who plans on attending. Since I can only have one poll per thread I started a second thread asking for input as to where you would or will stay. We need input on both of these to work on plans.
We also need input as to how many would participate in the semi-FT event and the night shoot. The FT event will be for bragging rights, no national points or anything. Our event IS a FUN shoot after all.
LOL
Thanks for all the input.

Eric and I discussed this. Since this is a Fun Shoot and not a sanctioned FT event, we will most likely use paper targets. So folks can shoot what they brung.

The walk through hunting challenge was discussed last night with Dave. Since this isn’t a national scoring competition we can pretty much do what ever we want. I vote for FUN!

I looked at the traditional airgun metal targets that have a knock out kill zone, but they are limited to light energies. If a 25cal or 22 set up for actual hunting velocities were used those targets wouldn’t last the day. I did source these and found them as cheap as 15.00 per unit from China. BUT, given the energies I’d like to open the hunting walk up to (well over 20 fpe) these would just be high priced scrap at the end of the shoot. There are properly built targets with knock down centers that will withstand rimfire energies, but they are priced at 60.00 each. Why does fun cost much?

I checked into different paper targets and found the most universal one is a 5.5”x5.5” airgun traditional scored ring. I’m looking into local print sourcing for a bulk supply. If we have anywhere around 30 shooting lanes engaging double targets from 10-55 yards or more, we will burn up a mess of them. I can also insert animal silhouettes with scoring rings too for mixing it up. Given the shots will be scored, this should tighten up the competition and give a true hunting scenario if I do my part....

I plan on making a simple wire framed target holder that I can place on trees, stumps, ground, anything in any  position to hold the targets. When the shooter goes thru the course, targets are simply changed out.

The wire framed and paper targets could accommodate any airgun, any energies, and any calibers including rimfires.

We need to get a roster of how many shooters we might get to properly staff the course. ALSO....what kind of carrot we can dangle out for the winner/winners? We could lay down a few bucks for the round and have percentage payouts for 1,2,3 places.  Cap each round at 10 shooters for the prize pot? Or whatever we want!! I need to know if it will be run one day or three...?

I’ve already started clearing shooting lanes for the walk thru. So far this looks like an awesome course. It is in the woods but I will be able to mow it and spray it down with permethrin to kill off bugs before the show. There  are several natural resting (on a log), and leaning supported shots in this course.....doubt there will need to be sitting positions unless you folks want one or two...??

My local postmaster is a drone nut. He was out flying on the farm the other day and offered to do some video of the hunting course and an over view of the new firing line location. I think a better vision of what new features this shoot is going to have will stimulate the hive early and get the butts off the chairs.

Anyway, more info later on......hopefully today I’ll be getting full details on amenities and costs of Crown Point reservations.

Please post feedback and stir the idea pot....I’m fired up and winter inspires me to build stuff.

Great ideas.  Another option for fun is placing metal gongs out for shooting.  These are designed to handle HP rifles and would be scored based on sound of hitting the target.  Noone has to venture down range to change them (unlike paper) and you get instant feedback of a hit.

http://www.qualitytargets.com/gong-stand-kit-w-8-3-8-thick-ar500-hardox-bear-ear-gong-ar500/ (http://www.qualitytargets.com/gong-stand-kit-w-8-3-8-thick-ar500-hardox-bear-ear-gong-ar500/)

Using these 3 inch gongs could be hung off rebar and be economical, capable of handling 25 cal 100 ft lb rifles and reactive - not requiring cold range to replace target.  Probably need to squad shooters with the other shooters providing verification of a "hit"

Our club would be willing to bring a dozen field targets for a small course, but would insist on low powered 177 rifles to preserve the functioning of the targets.

Will the shooting lanes be arranged so that targets can be changed without calling cold line?  That is the big advantage of resettable targets - no need to go downrange!
Title: Re: 2019 GTA Gene Curtis Memorial Fun Shoot/Airgun Show

The course has a curve to it as it goes along. It’s about 180 yards long total. As the shooter proceeds along the path they will go around this natural bend and then will not have the ability to direct fire backwards in any way.

My thoughts is to have a target changer swap out targets after the shooter goes thru that Bend to keep a good flow of shooters progressing through the course. The shot targets can then be scored when they are returned to the first station. The next shooter is already engaging fresh targets.

At least this is the proposed layout and plan.

This just in....

When you call make sure to mention the GTA Airgun show/shoot. There may some small details missing, but that’s why you can all call to iron them out. I just wanted to get the bulk of the details posted with costs so we all can begin to settle in. Go to their Facebook pages and the Papa Dick’s restaurant page to get a feel for what they have to offer at that one location. If it books up quickly, keep in mind we still have Cedar Glade Resort on the other end of town (3.4 miles from the Expo). Papa Dicks can still be used by all GtA folks, it is a public restaurant and open to anyone, not just guests of the resort. So we all can organize and meet at Papa Dick’s if we wanted even if we don’t stay there.

Had a great visit today with Eric at Horseshoe Bend Arkansas. He has a great change in his layout design. There will be much larger Firing Lane width distances up to 250 yards for the big bore. There will also be a wonderful wooded course with Lane setup for field Target, with the addition of lanes set up for any energy rifle with metal gongs and paper targets. The new area will have a covered tree backdrop for people to socialize and lots of vehicle parking. This will be a wonderful Improvement to an already excellent venue.

Overall the ideas we spun around will make an awesome walk through competition. I am progressing with those ideas to get it dialed in.

Soon as I get a few more shooting lanes blazed out, I’ll get my buddy out here and drone film the course so those planning on coming out have a little more insite what we will have to offer at this shoot.

I will boldly say this....

This one will be well worth the drive and effort to come to.

What will be the range for the big bore Fun Shoot competition?

I think that is best left to a consensus of the Big Bore shooters. The location has options for 250-plus yards.

Likely need to have a protective brace in front of the stand for the Heavy Hitters. I don't think distance can make up for a hundred grains of mass.

If it is going to be Steel Gongs maybe several progressively smaller targets at various distances. Perhaps start th 75 yards and go out at 25 yards increments. That way it would be a real competition and would also make for some interesting platform testing for those with an interest in purchasing a big bore in the future. It could be done over two days. Day one for shooter practice and day two for the competition.

The east end of the firing line is where big bores can let it rip. They have freedom out to 340 yards or so.

Since the consensus was to have them separate from the little spitters, I’m offering one end or the whole 20x40 tent to those who like to make noise. All depends how many BB guys we have. The new line can accommodate them and be well enough away from those who like it quiet too.

I’m thinking of the 2nd west 20 x 40 tent to be for the smaller stuff as it has a natural terrace in the field right at 50 yards. The two big tents can have a gap between them or I have 2 additional 10x20’ to set between the 20x40’s.

Lots of options this year fellas. I have the full use  of 2 20x40’s and 2 10x20’ tents. Just hope we don’t have some sort of wind that week......that would be bad :'(

Anyway, the BB guys can bring what ever they wish to tear up and let Dave show off clearing anything he wants with his one shot trick shots.....

Do folks typically visit all three days or just come and go on individual days?

It varies.  Those coming from out of state like me get there on Thursday or Friday typically and leave out Sunday.  If local, you can do whatever you want to...Lucky duck.  A local won the comp last year in the PCP class by the way.  It's a whole new year now though.

Whatever you want to do is fine. For me, it depends on flight schedules. Last year, I arrived in Harrison on thursday, drove to the shoot on Fri,  stayed fri and sat night, then drove back to harrison on sunday, and flew to DFW on Monday.
Come and go as you like.

I'm likely to drag my son along with me.  Looking it up, I think we're about 3.5 hours drive away.  It'd be hit or miss as to whether or not I'd be able to take that Friday off work but I could likely do Saturday and/or Sunday.  I just wasn't sure if things were scheduled to be multi-day or if each day had the same things going on.

And what's this mess about fishing?  I haven't fished in that area before, might be a good time to rip some lips as well...  Guess I'm going to have to do some recon of the region!

Thanks for the info!

EVERYONE is welcome at the GTA Fun Shoot!!! From the person that joins while attending the event to the seasoned old timer. And everyone in between!!!
Generally, we start Friday with setup and free for all shooting. Meet and greet and get reacquainted with old friends and meeting new ones. Everyone is on their own Friday.
Saturday is the main event day with shooting, competitions, this year we also have an FT range event, annual paintball shooting competition, meal furnished by your GTA donated funds and then awards and announcements of raffle winners and such. Then back to free for all shooting. Sunday is generally a day of cleaning up, packing up and saying good byes till next time.
Folks CAN show up anytime they want. I plan on being there starting Tuesday for setup and ironing out last minute details.
Buying, selling and trading goes on throughout the event. Shooting will be going on all day and we have night shoots planned also for those that wish to partake.
Come on out any and all days. Attend when you can and want to, but don't miss Saturday for sure!!!!
:)

I think we need some smaller steel plates sat at different distances out to 100 yards.  I had no difficulty hitting the steel plate sat at 75 yards using my Benjamin 397 standing, of course I was having a real good day shooting.  I'll try and make up some smaller steel targets when it gets warmer.

My good lady is off to South Africa to visit the Kruger park and surrounding area. She says to me "where in the world would you like to go?"
I of course answer "Horseshoe bend , Arkansas."
Well she agreed and then when I said the dates she said we couldn't go because she is away in Africa that weekend!

So it would have to be next year for me. I hope you all have a great time again.

Best regards Neil.

The two Bobs (Springerrrr and Elguapo99) are going to be at the Crown Point.  One of them caved and refused to camp on site and I ain't gonna tell you which one, so the other caved and accepted the girly method of lodging at the Crown Point.

See Ya'll there.  Yo, Sfttailrdr46, Ya'll is southern for you all.  I had to learn that myself when I left N.Y. for Tennessee 16 years back.  Now I shoot guns on a regular basis, carry a gun, drive a truck, have a dag and if I look hard enough in my limited wardrobe, I think I have a pair of jean coveralls.  Oh yeah, a bottle of Jack Daniels is not safe in my presence either. ;D  My neck went red a while ago.

;) ;D I think he meant "dawg" and I have been a southern boy all my life since I grew up on the eastern end south shore of Long Island and at least 1/2 my neighbors made their living on the water or farming. I also spent 4 years in Charleston SC then later another 4.5 in Garrisonville VA So I guess once you scratch the surface I am really a true southern boy at heart.  ;D ;D

Mini update....

Should be very soon and I’ll have a drone video overview of the entire spread. Talked to my local post master “drone dude” this morning and he has his new antennae components for his rig.....seems like that last time he flew out by me, one antenna was sacrificed during a woods incident. He says his GoPro cam is  ready for a good run.

Just an update for those who like to feed on info now and then.....

My drone guy is scheduled to fly and film tomorrow , mon, or tues. We have been swamped with wet weather plus he runs our local post office so it’s not easy to get things lined up.

I also have made hard contact with Umarex’s marketing department and they are very interested in some sort of showing/involvement at this event.  They are awaiting the video and the itinerary for the show and then they will have a final decision to what depth they plan to get involved.

Anyway, I have everything crossed that I can humanly cross to hope and pray we can land them at this event.

More later....preferably with an award winning video to share soon.

And one more thing. If you are planning on getting lodging nailed down, better do it soon....like REALY soon. Once the video and itinerary are solid, this show will go full advertising mode and it will become more difficult from that point on to find a bed. We still have wild and free camping next to the lake, so don’t count yourself out if you are late.

Ok fellas here are two more videos I finished today.

The first video is showing the overall layout of the Expo building in relationship to the live fire shoot. Plenty of parking for shooters and spectators. Each shooter has the ability to drive right to the firing line and back up to their own spot. The firing line can currently accommodate 100 feet of covered space not counting any of your own pop up shelters. The entire length of the new line is easily 100 plus yards possibly much more as I never ranged it.

The second video is the F/T or walking trail competition marked with blue and yellow flags showing the path. Numerous shooting lanes can be cut on either side of the trail for any number of scenarios. The end of part 2 shows the main firing line area flagged at natural berms at the 50 yard and 75 yard ranges. Continuing passed those berms is a maximum of 325 yards to the wood line.

The editing software I used is “Quik” by GoPro and it limits what I can do it. I hope it gets the point across of what is here and the wide range of area we are able to play in this year.

Feel free to copy and distribute as you see fit.

If we see any squirrels during the woods walk, can we plug them for bonus points?   ;D ;D ;D

On a serious note, I camped out there onsite last year.  There were absolutely zero mosquitoes, which absolutely amazed me!  BUT there were teeny tiny ticks, which I didn't even see until I got back home.  I would absolutely recommend a good tick repellent for the woods walk, and maybe even dust the inside of your clothes with sulfur repellent.

And bring your sweetie, so he/she can check you for ticks.  8) ::) ;)

Great point about the ticks....I plan on running a permethrin spray down that walkway and on the firing line for the shoot. That will definitely send a message to any little blood suckers that may be lurking there. Regardless, a good supply of spray is strongly encouraged.

Eric, that will be great having a separate end section of a tent set up for those noisy darn big bores.  Like having a separate area at work that all the smokers are banished to, LOL.
But seriously, that will be nice, not feeling like a bad neighbor making a bunch of noise early on a Sunday morning.

I have a fifth wheel that is self contained, I can bring my own water, built in generator for power, but is there a place to park such a rig. Not sure if I can make it, but if I tell the wife we are going camping in the fifth wheel I'll get a better response.

Ok fellas, the itinerary for the show/shoot needs ironing out and hopefully your insite can help out.

The Field and Target or “jungle walk” part of the shoot has so many possible layers to it and I wish to maximize its fun for you for the amount of work going into it. For those who don’t know what is being planned here, view the short drone filmed video of the walking trail and use your imagination regarding shooting lanes and hunting scenarios that are presented all the way down the trail. If at all possible mention this post in other topics to get more eyes on it for suggestions.

https://gopro.com/v/JbWMvy22a1En7

If all goes as planned NASA (Northwest Arkansas Spring-Gun Association) will be allowing us to use some of their field target systems for under 20fp shooting. One side of the walking path can be set up for this lower energy level of shooting. The other side will allow any level of energy because it will use a combination of scored paper targets  and steel. We obviously can not mix the two energies as NASA’s targets would be shredded with higher energy fire. I located a sufficient amount of paper targets that will work nicely, I just need to make up the frames/holders.

The show publicly opens  Fri, Sat, Sun. So we have three days to play with this trail.
First thing....Each day any new shooter must go through a safety training meeting before being allowed to shoot anywhere on the premises. Once the shooter is cleared and given a safety badge, they can then go about the show and enjoy live fire on any of the ranges.

The question I have for you folks is how would you break down each day for the F/T “jungle walk” part of the shoot. Sunday could be simply a free style walk through shoot but no paper scored targets would be used.
Saturday or Friday could be the competition day where the participants now pay for the round and split up cash prize money for 1,2,3rd places. It could be divided into several categories or calibers. One competition could be just the 20fp or less. One could be any energy fp. One could be under 25cal....etc. The runs could be timed and scored according by hits and points (paper targets). Each run eligible for scores would be required to pay a few bucks for their run to cover scoring, papertargets, prize money, trophy, etc....

Anyway, you can see how many options are out there for the F/T walk. I need a little bit of direction from you fellas that will be participating.

What would you like to see???

Also, I’ll be needing some type of system of volunteers to staff such a project too. Maybe each shooter that finishes his run must accompany the next shooter down the trail and score them? Some way to keep things safe and fair is  all.

Sad news for me.  The Fun shoot date conflicts with a wedding date I'm involved in out of state.  So, at this point it doesn't look like I'll make it this year.  :'(   Just can't find away around it right now.  My wife hates it for me, but is not budging so far.

I really wanted to shake some new hands, like Tom Costan, and some of the JSAR fellas I haven't met yet.

Thanks Shawn!  I was hungry for another win.  It was devastating to connect the dots on the dates yesterday.  Not really into weddings, but maybe the food will be good.  I am really bummed right now.

My opinion.....

Don't have prize money.  Prize money can make things become serious.  Trophies, ribbons, rocks, logs, etc are fine for prizes.

4 classes:
<20 ft lb springer
<20 ft lb pcp
>20 ft lb springer
>20 ft lb pcp

Looking forward to this.  it conflicts with another event I'd love to attend, but I'm picking this event this year.

Maybe sell tickets to do the woods walk? I mean, it is a pretty novel affair!  The funds raised could go to the GTA coffers and/or covering the costs of putting on the shoot. As for prizes, I'm fine with a scoreboard in the meeting hall where bragging rights could be posted.  Or you could do a modest prize that won't ruffle the overzealous, like a $25 PA or Trenier gift certificate?

Question about the mandatory safety meeting - how will you do that with shooters showing up throughout the day(s)?  Have a meeting every hour?  There might be some folks ticked if they drive several hours and find out they can't shoot because, "you missed the meeting".  Also, how will the guys know who may have been there before and drive straight to the shooting line?

And l don't remember if I asked this, but is this another rimfire/airgun combo event, or is it "all air and only air"?  I gotta know what toys to bring!   ;)   (If there are a bunch of noisy rimfire shooters, I will bet you stick them with LLoyd-ss and the other big-bore earplug crowd!)

Thanks you two!  That means a lot.  I'll miss seeing everyone and the fun times, but will look forward to all the stories to come.

As far as the Woods Walk event,  I think there definitely should be prize money on the line, and a trophy/ribbon.  That's the GTA tradition.  Bragging rights only last a couple of hours in my experience.  Hopefully PA or another vendor will offer up a voucher (or something) like has been done for the Fun Shoot in the past.  That's money or stuff for shooting, and gives more incentive for the participants to put some effort into it.

I also think the safety meeting is a good thing before the event.  That way, everyone is on the same page and not making up their own rules as they go through the course.  For the late comers, have the rules typed out and require them to read and sign something acknowledging that they understand the rules and will adhere to them.  In fact, I think everyone should sign to cover all legal basis.

That or I'd be happy to go thirds and sleep on the floor on my blow up mattress, just want access to a shower so I don't kill anyone within ten yards of me. ;D Drop me a PM if interested. Here is a call out to any and all those out there who have business vinyl signage/banners and want to get your sign/signs in the mix for the show/shoot. There are many areas to hang signage at this event.

Inside the Expo on the walls or hanging from the ceilings.
Outside at the main Expo entrance at Industrial St.
All along the roadway coming into the Expo...(about a 1/4 mile worth)
At the second entrance for the live firing line.
At the either end of the “bridge” going to and from the firing line.
Several hundred yards of woven fence (two sided) at the main firing line.
At the main entrance to the wooded walk shooting competition.
There is at least a 1/2 mile of state hiway frontage I can use.

Basically...

...I own 270 acres that is directly connected to the Expo Center. I own state hiway frontage (HWY 289) going north and south of either entrance to the show/shoot.

The parking lot for the main firing line has several hundred yards of woven wire fencing at a 5 foot height. I can zip tie anything to that and it will be visible by all who attend. There are two sides to the fence

Basically I can accommodate what ever YOU have for advertising media and I can ship whatever items you would need back without trouble, I have commercial shipping equipment to properly box and return items. If you don’t need your stuff back I’ll simply save them for next years event.

Don’t be shy, send me whatever you can dream up.  I doubt we could over do it at this event given the space I have available....

Send me a message or call if you want you signage taken care of. Get me your stuff early so I can organize and get it properly displayed in a timely manner. No charge fellas!!!

Eric

Update for the upcoming shoot/Show......

Just got back from the Wanenmacher Tulsa gunshow. While sporting the GTA hat and shirt, I bumped into several air gunners and extended the invite to the shoot/Show coming up. Lil over a month away now fellas!!!! I even snagged me an Airforce Condor SS at a nice price.

Anyway, one major stop for me for this show was to get with the steel target guys. Had a lengthy chat with those boys on Saturday. They went back to their shop that night and gathered up a mess of hanging steel for me. Some were culls from an ooops cut with the plasma CNC  but they are still viable ar500 steel targets. The cool thing is they are 1/4” steel and will respond well with airgun impacts. Most of their steel in 3/8 or 1/2”. I have a deer silhouette and a coyote and many hangers for the walking trail shoot. I managed to finagle a longer range “know your limits” set up from 10” down to 1” diameters for the big bore guys that are  liking the long range challenges.

They scrapped together a mess of discontinued steel forms that didn’t sell well for them. So we now have a mess of hanging steel to pummel this time around.

They seemed interested in driving over from OK to attending the show too!!!

Anyway, my back is killing me from dragging all that steel out of the show.

More later and start toppin off your tanks guys!!!

Eric

Excellent news and update Eric. And thanks for representing at the gun show!!!
Looking forward to plinking some of those heavy targets too. :)
I am getting ready to restock T-shirts so please take a look at the shirt sticky and vote in the poll. I need an idea of the sizes for the order. I'll have all sizes and several colors. Will have ladies shirts also. These are 50/50 blend so they will not shrink and are cooler to wear than all cotton. All non-pocket shirts will be $20 each and pocket shirts $25 each. And also restocking caps, I'll have plenty at the Fun Shoot price of $15 since there is no shipping involved.
Thanks again Eric and see you shortly. Vote at the below link.

What do you have or plan to make for hanging all that steel?  Either way, I am sure you will set them up at various distances for us spring guys as well as the air cannon guys too.

I was going to bring my mobile steel targets hung from a welded rebar "T" but it will pale in comparison to all those you snagged.

I do plan on making a wood target holder for golf tees and paint balls like I had last year.  That seemed to get a lot of usage.

I bought a few steel hangers from the target guys, that’s the curvy looking thingies with the ring on one end. I’ll be making some custom stuff for the woods walk.

I managed to snag a box of tennis balls at one of our auctions on Thursday night...should make for some fun stuff.

The KYL long range set will be tested this Saturday....I’ll see if I can remember to take some pics of it set up.

Speaking of Thursday night auction, one of our consigners is gathering up a mess of airgun stuff for that week. I’ll know a week in advance what’s all in it for that Thursday night bidding.

Bring anything you want to blast!

We should test the tennis balls first.  Lower power guns just may ricochet the pellets back at us.

One year I wanted to set up a "driving" contest with golf balls.  Using the same caliber guns, the ball that went the furthest when shot off a golf tee is the winner.  It wasn't long before we found out that a golf ball sends pellets back about as fast as they go out.  End of contest.

Everything there is spread out and small. As you probably saw. We can definitely look at suggestions and see what we can do.

Benchrest....
This might be where the “Know Your Limits” targets would work for you and others. There are three of them available. They can be set at different distances for three different comps. Maybe one for freehand closer range 10M? One for springers at 25yards and one at 50 for pcp’s.

The great part about a KYL system is there is no paper to change out, so the rest of the shoot doesn’t have to deal with a ceasefire.

BUT....I’ve been working on the walking trail this past week......it should be great fun. I hope y’all enjoy it. Having everything all filled out and green makes such a difference in what it looked like in the March video I posted.

The time is getting closer. I’m needing some info from you fellas and gals.

How many are planning on being on the main firing line as a shooter? I’m needing to know so we can prepare the tents. The tents are large to work with so knowing how many shooters there might be would help. If I only needed one big tent and a couple of smaller 20 footers or if I need all of them.

Give me a shout out if you are planning on being a shooter on the main line.

Eric,
The two Bob's (Springrrrr and Elguapo99) will be shooting on the main line. We have a small pop-up canopy but would rather be under a larger tent like last year as the small canopy doesn't really provide enough shade.  We'll be bringing a 6 foot table and lots of targets (steel and paintball). Thanks.

This tent situation is my dilemma. The big tents I have are 20x40. If I would know how many shooters are on the line, I would know how many tents and what sizes are needed. It’s  helpful that personal pop ups are considered....but this time, I dont need them unless all the tents are used up.

What I would like to plan on is putting up one 20x40 then a 10x20 and then connect the other 20x40. So at minimum we would have 100 feet of tent all in a row clear of cables, wires, and such on the inside. I still have 2 10x20 footers to spare if needed.

One side of these tents “the east side” would be “big bore” the middle I planned for the competitions area and the kids section. Then the other side “west side” for the small bore/shorter range guys.

I guess when the early bird helpers show up they will have more of a vision of what I’m thinking right now.

This event is set up radically different than last years event.....by far.

I’m thankful there is an army of helpers stepping up this time around. I will need it for sure if the rainy weather doesn’t break here.

The field where the main line is located needs a crop of hay cut, raked, and round baled before the shoot. The the areas where the tents will be placed and areas  out to the targets will get cut short with the mower.

We have been swamped with rain almost every day and no break in site for a while.......

Another issue is my drone guy lost battery power and drowned his drone in a lake 2 weeks ago. Could not find it. So he’s building a new one and we hope to have it programmed and flight tested before the show.

The bright side is.....
The walking trail looks awesome. It is beyond what I felt it would look like. 6 lanes for the <20fpe side (targets supplied by the gracious NASA group) and 13 lanes for the >20fpe side. For those who don’t  wish to walk an entire run, they can just shoot the short side comp. Paper target holders are made and targets with a quick change out feature is finished too....should run very smooth.

Anyway, the lake is full, campsite ready to go, fire pit ready to accept a pile of firewood for after hours.

Oh, one more thing.....the LED flood lights came in and preliminary testing looks very good for lighting up the field of fire for the night shoot Friday and Saturday. Hopefully I’ll get to set up and test it all between rain clouds on the actual firing line.

Should be a great show and shoot fellas.....sorry that some couldn’t make it this year.

More later....

Teresa and I, along with Rocker1 (David & Diane) will be in sometime Tuesday to help get started as usual. Rich (amb5500c) and a few others have said they will arrive Thursday to help set up. I'm looking forward to this years event, as I always do. I will say last year was absolutely one of the very best for me and Teresa. And mainly because of the host and hostess, the venue and most definitely to the amount of volunteer help we had. THAT took a huge load off of me and gave me more time to enjoy mingling and getting reacquainted with our friends. And meeting new ones. I hope to have the same or even better time this year. MANY thanks to all that come early and volunteer to help out. It is appreciated more than you will ever know.
And ahead of time, MANY thanks to Eric and Michelle for being such outstanding hosts!!!!
I have a new drone that has yet to be out of the box for it's maiden flight. I will bring it but no guarantee on the quality of video. LOL
It's not my first drone but this is my first professional model.

The NASA group promoted the event to anyone that would listen this weekend at the Arkansas show. While our members aren't as active on GTA, we're expecting 5 shooters confirmed, and possibly as many tentative. I'll bring an extra pop-up and table, just in case. Looking forward to the event!

Thank you for the promotion at Malvern. I wanted to skip out and check it out but too much work needs to get done yet.

It looks like we will have 100 feet of covered firing line at this point. Enough shooters have come forward to use that length of spread. It also is looking good for me to get that one crop of hay off of the field before the shoot. The weather has appeared to break for a three day stretch....enough time to roll some hay and get it hauled off.

Still plenty to get ready yet.

I’m getting that butterfly feeling already.....whoooohoooo!!

Excellent Matt, see you guys Friday morning.
Almost time for rubber to hit the road. I'm busy this week sorting and loading the trailer. Definitely a labor of love. I'm looking forward to the event as I do every year. We will once again have JR cater the event. This is a BIG load off of Teresa and I and besides it is REALLY excellent food. Always plenty to eat.
I can't thank Eric and Michelle enough for hosting this bunch and all of their effort shows. It's a fantastic venue.
While sorting and packing, I want to thank our vendors and members that stepped up to make this event even possible. There are some others and I'll have a more complete list I'll post afterwards.
But ahead of time a very special thanks to:
Eric & Michelle Graetz
Kristen, Paul & crew @ Pyramyd Air
David & Diane (Rocker1)
My wife Teresa
Vincent @ Airgun Exporters
Cathy @ CharlieDaTuna
Davio @ Alchemy Airwerks
Tom @ American Air Arms
The crew @ JSAR
Nick @ Nielsen Specialty Ammo
Jody @ Olivent.org
Jeff @ Trenier Outdoors
Steve @ Woods and Water
Zeddymon
Air Tanks Plus

These folks have donated either items for raffle or door prizes, and/or cash, and/or their time to help with the event. MANY thanks to everyone that helps out, you make it the event of the year!!!
Be sure to bring a little cash with you. We will have GTA merchandise like caps and T-shirts. Have a selection of ladies shirts this year. Also have some fantastic raffle items, so bring money to buy tickets. Every nickel collected goes toward supporting this event as well as the forum.
See ya'll there next week.

And Walmart here does not carry them any longer. I can always run to Academy Sports or other store if no one has any.

I'm pretty sure I only live a few hours from the shoot.  This would be a lot of fun to check out.  I'm new around here, though.

Do folks typically visit all three days or just come and go on individual days?

We've got a group from NWA that will be there Friday-Sunday. We also shoot Indoor Silhouette a couple times a month in Springdale. Look forward to meeting you at the event!

Put the NASA group down for a table, please. Looking forward to the event this weekend!

We plan to be there Thursday afternoon to help out and setup.

Can you post an update Thursday night with anything that may be needed? Our group won't be over till noon on Friday and could make some last minute adjustments to packing.

Being that this event is really focused on being a GTA family reunion, folks are free to come and go as they please. Come early, stay late or just come for one day. If you come for any day, make it Saturday for sure. That is the main event day where we have the paintball competition, field target fun shoot, catered lunch, raffle and door prize drawings along with the award of the paintball trophies and prizes. Some of us are arriving early to help setup and just enjoy "free for all" shooting. It gives us time behind the trigger to fine tune our setups.
Anyway, come whatever day(s) you can but if possible, make sure to be there Saturday!!!

Thanks so much!!!

Update...

Today hay was cut in the main field where the firing line is going to be. Much of the field has in standing water yet, so a complete cut was not possible. I cut all the tent (firing line) area, the parking areas at the line accessible from entrance “B” and the range itself out to 325 plus yards....hopefully it will dry out for baling by Wednesday.

I just got back from testing the LED flood light set up over the cut field.......couldn’t be more happy with what it produced!!!!

I think I might be short on safety glasses for the kids plinking tent......and maybe some BB’s to keep the Red Ryder’s fed.

I’ve got plans for the first arrivals to assist in target hanging on the walking trail and tent set up after the hay is rolled up.

See y’all in a few days!!

I'm making my lists and checking them twice   ;)   This is the second year for me, so I have a better idea. Bringing 2 rifles to sell, 1/2 doz. scopes, several dozen tins of both .177 & .22 pellets, some odds/ends. Once again seeing the fine folks I met from last year and hopefully meet a bunch of new people this year as well. For me it's as much about the people and the ambience than the shooting.
Oh! just remembered to add earplugs to my list!! Until Thursday   ;D

I believe the standard perception is that if someone can shoot an airgun...now they are family!  :-)   Bring them out! If they are kids and/or very unfamiliar with airguns and shooting, you might want to keep a doubly sharp eye on them.

Exactly right Mark!!! And Teresa on my case the whole time I'm loading telling me DO NOT over pack and take a bunch of airguns you won't even shoot. LOL
It's like having to choose which kid to take on family vacation and which you have to leave at home.
I am on vacation but was called into work today for almost 5 hours. But we STILL had time to play with a bunch of big boy toys...all kinds. Was a great day even if work tried to ruin it.
And I ain't kilt the old coot yet.

It is sure sizing up to be quite the competition this year in the PCP class.  You've got Dez with his new Crown, Oldpro with his new Raptor, and of course the .25 Marauders to contend with, plus who knows what Tom with AAA has up his sleeve to bring..  Also, I know of at least one Liberty in the hunt for a win just to name some of the many contenders... All in fun of course. ;)

You guys and gals have fun and be careful.  Those like myself that can't make it this year are looking forward to all of the posted stories, videos and pictures.  Don't leave us hanging.

Actually watching my step son get his Bachelor's Degree is the only reason I am missing the fun shoot. His mom and I are very proud of his achievements.

Does anybody want a sneak peek at property? Eric just bailed and remowed. It is UNREAL here. Every shooter dreams of this property. I think I am just going to stay. Hello Arkansas !

We just arrived a bit ago. Drove out to the Expo Center and saw Eric on the tractor. We just walked the levy and I showed Rocker the layout. Dropped the trailer and headed to Crown Point. MAN this place is nice!!! Right on the water. Getting ready to hit Papa Dicks for a pizza. Then go for groceries. See all you folks soon.
And you best worry about David. He may not be a great shot but his new Daystate Airwolf IS. It's deadly!!! Paintball competition this year will be brutal.

But fun.....

Wish we could make it this year, just cannot make it happen. Would.love to put the new to me RAW HM1000 against that Daystate!

I do have 1 favor to ask though. Since I cannot be there this year I need someone, anyone to stop by and give Shaun some grief about every 30 minutes. I fear he might get a bit moody if everyone is nice to him all the time and he won't enjoy himself. I will leave it to you all to work out the details.

We have a lot of covered firing line that you can drive right up to. We have a 345 yard range directly in front. If you need more, it is here to be had with a bit of shuffling. BRING BUG SPRAY REPELLENT!!!! We found a bunch of small ticks, be warned. They loved David so we might just tie him up for bait and they will leave the rest of us alone. :)
Looking forward to the event. See ya'll there. Hope your airguns arrive at the same airport as you do Liz.

There's two boxes of goodies (including airguns) waiting for me at the Expo Center I've not even opened yet. Goodies, goodies, and more goodies. :)
Bring cash. And of course GTA paraphernalia like shirts, caps and a limited number of limited edition GTA mouse pads.
Oh, and if possible, be at the Expo Center Thursday night. Starting at 5pm Michelle will be holding her weekly auction. And there are airguns in this one.

Love to go, but it's just too far for me.
In 2012, Gene's posts on tuning an air rifle got me back shooting again.
Did a Google search on tuning a Hatsan 95 and thought "This Guy know what he talking about ;)."  I've been hooked since.

Bree and I got in town about 4:30, checked in and lucked into dinner with Lloyd and Marty.  We did preliminary setup at the range, and are cooling our heels as we look over the lake.

Crown Point Resort is NICE!

Shooting starts as soon as you get here. You can shoot the FT trail in the morning. Lunch starts around 11:30. Around 1pm we will try to start the paintball competition. Then immediately afterwards we are back at the Expo Center for the raffle drawings, door prizes and the award of the paintball winners as well as the FT trail winners.

We are meeting at Artisan Resturant at 6pm tonight for anyone wanting to join the bunch. It's between Ash Flat And Hardy.

Sorry, I can't hear you, I was sitting next to Lloyd.  8)

Actually it's much improved from a couple years ago.  He made a nice moderator for it, and it doesn't do the double-bang it did when he had it at the shoot a couple of years ago.   I noticed he is shooting a cast slug just like I used to shoot in my muzzleloader.   ;D  The rifle is actually doing pretty well now.

He had a sad moment Friday afternoon when he went to fill his Marauder-Double and all he got was the whooshing sound of an seal dying instantly.

And while most of us were throwing lead, Bree was catching the biggest fish of her life at the Crown Lake.  Guess what's for dinner???   :D

Congrats Travis!  I just got off the road and was checking to see who took the top spot.  At first It looked like Dez did from the photo holding the trophy, but alas it was the Oldpro with the Raptor.  No surprise there.  Sorry I wasn't there to battle it out with you all.

Who won the Big bore slot?

Ok, thanks for setting me straight.  It looked like the Raptor next to the 1st place trophy, and Dez holding a trophy, all having me confused, which doesn't take much.

I did get a new gun while I was away in Chicago.  When I showed up at the wedding, I was presented with this gun (as a funny) by the groom's mother.  My wife must have mentioned my missing the fun shoot, lol.

Hope all have safe travels back home, and I am looking forward to seeing further reports and pics of the events.

Congrats Grumpy on the win!

I flew my drone over the firing line yesterday but have not had time to check and edit the video. I'll get it cleaned up and posted shortly. For now, I'm tired.
A big storm blew threw right after we wrapped up the activities today. Thank goodness no one was hurt. The tents took damage. We will do what we can to help Eric rebuild the shelters before next year. He and Michelle have taken such good care of us that we need to return the favor!!!!

Another great GTA event is now in the history books. MANY thanks to our fantastic hosts Eric and Michelle Graetz. I can't say enough about them and opening their property up to accommodate us airgun nutz. But thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!
Thanks to JR Wilson and Linda for catering the fantastic meal today. Great as always with smoked ribs, smoked chicken and pulled pork, baked beans, slaw, drinks and desserts. WOW!!!
Thank you to all of the GTA vendors and a special thanks to the members that donated items for raffle and door prizes. There was some really neat stuff for us to take home.
A very memorable event for me was the visit from our dear old friend Joe (jonnnyboy) and his bride Penny. We have not seen our friend in a long time and we were blessed and relieved to see him again. I hope he will "sneak" back on here more often. We miss you my brother!!!!
A very special thanks to the NASA crew for coming down a while back and getting with Eric about laying out an FT trail. And a very heart felt thanks to Mitch (aluminumfetish) for working tirelessly with Eric early this week actually building the very neat FT trail. This will hopefully become an annual event also. And thanks to Eric for the idea, making it happen and even donating airgun prizes to the winners!!!
MANY thanks to each and every one of you that made the journey to be here this year. Our numbers were down due mainly to conflicts with family graduations or weddings. Some we expected to see had other commitments. But those that came, I believe, had a great time as we always do. It is an event to come to for sure!!!
Thanks for all of the support buying raffle tickets. We were able to pay for the event and have a little left over to put in the kitty for forum support. Thank you all for that.
Teresa and I are blessed to have so many of you come to the event and offer to help. It is very appreciated and is one main reason we will continue to set this event up for you every year we can possibly still do it. We are exhausted but as always, it is a rewarding tired. Thanks to all of you for making this an event we will remember. Safe travels back home and make your plans to come back next year. We ARE thinking about possibly breaking tradition and moving the event to the Fall. POSSIBLY....
I'll put up a poll and also drag it past our hosts for their thoughts.
GOD Bless and take care.
D Ez & Teresa

I am fairly new to this drone and need a bit more stick time. But here is a rough video of the 2019 GTA Fun Shoot firing line. This was Friday and only had about 1/2 or maybe 1/3 of the targets we eventually set up. You can see we had an awesome setup!!! Thanks to all of the hard work by Eric. As I give a shot of the stocked pond, you will see the levee and the bridge he constructed for us last year. Past the bridge behind the small tree line you can just make out the Expo Center. That is where we hold the raffles, presentations and gather to eat.
Eric's postmaster had his drone out there also so I'm sure we will see more video shortly.

I actually did better than Mark this year! Once again it was a fun time visiting with everyone, especially Miss Lizzie and Steven. And I made possibly the most amazing shot in the paintball contest. I shot that tee right out from under the paintball! Didn't even touch the paintball! Really missed everyone that couldn't make it; Keith,Don,Jeff from Treneir, AJ and all the rest. Heck even Gipper. Wasn't the same without you guys. Don't get me wrong, we still had fun without you, it just was different. ;D

Awesome event, some of the most fun shooting I've ever had.  Huge thanks to Eric and the GTA crew for throwing this party.

The array of targets at all the different distances was a hoot.  Even got a few hits on the big gong at 130 yds with a 16 ft lb .177 marauder.  Had a blast doing the woods walk match with the spring gun.

Huge number of door prizes and raffles, thanks to Pyramyd, JSAR, and everyone else that donated.  The food was great, I thought the ribs were exceptionally good.

Even the weather was good.  The storm at the end was interesting.  Turned the big tent into a box kite and moved it several feet.  Was a bit scary for my buddy Chris who was by his lonesome.  But it makes for a great story.  You guys need to hear him tell it.....

The annual event is always a memory maker. The food is fantastic. Getting away from work is a blessing. Seeing and shooting airguns is always a blast. The anticipation of the raffle results is exciting. But the very best part of this event is what I always say, it's a GTA family reunion. Seeing our old friends and meeting new ones is the absolute best part of the event. And that is what makes the memories for me that make me smile. It was great seeing all of you that attended. I really missed those that did not make it this year. Be sure to come next time. I'll see about posting the date shortly.
I hope everyone had a good time and safe travels back home. I sure hope we make it bigger and better next year. But it can only be better if you are there!!!!

Field Target, Woods Walk details.....

First off, this entire event would NOT have happened if help wasn’t received from Mitch (aluminumfetish). He and I worked two days straight hanging targets, trimming trails, painting gongs, set up tents, trim grass, haul targets, etc........massive thanks to Mitch for the dedication he had to get this done on time and on his vacation. You sir are welcome anytime Arkansas calls you. Thanks to those who were brave enough to run the trail! Walking along with all of you who did shoot was very enjoyable. Thanks!!!

The fee for the walk trail was $3.00 per run for either side. There was no limit on how many times a shooter could have wanted to shoot. The prizes for the winners of the two walk trails are....

1st place prizes....
Umarex Syrix in .177 for the <20fpe “right” side trail.
Gamo Swarm Maxxim in .177 for the >20fpe “left” side trail.

The right side of the walk was designed for less than 20fpe guns. There were 6 different shooting lanes with 61 possible points to be had. 5 paper scored targets with 11 metal, 2 of which were resetting animal silhouette. There were 4 spinning targets and the balance were steel gongs of 2” and 3” sizes. Distances varied and positions of targets were mounted on stumps, trees, ground, and hanging situations. This side of the walk was designed for those who didn’t wish to do the longer side of the trail but still get a tasty bite of the fun.

Here is the breakdown of the less than 20fpe side competitors>>>>>(sorry for any name misspellings)

1st place, Mark Pace with a BSA Scorpion SE .177 scored 51
2nd place, Mike Manning with a HW77 .177 scored 48
3rd place tie at 45 points between Marty Leili with an AirArms S510 .177 and Tom Smith with a RAW TM1000 in .177

4th place Bob Ratcliff with a HW97 in .177 scored 44
5th Brian Groves with a TW200 in .177 scored 42
6th place Bob Mezza with a PRod in .22 scored 38

The high energy side....
This “left” side was designed to take any fpe gun. Yup, even Lloyd’s 51 cal.!!!  ;D

The “left” walk had 122 total points possible with 13 lanes to shoot. It had 10 paper scored targets. 18 steel gongs of the 2” and 3” diameter hung in various situations and distances. The last station had a sort of Hail Mary or a KYL situation. A closer 3” could be hit for one point or choose a further set of steel from 4,3,2” diameters for higher bonus points. A miss of any of those would yield ZERO points at that station.

Only two shooters completed the entire run for a complete score. Two shooters called their run early and three other shooters were forced to stop due to the storm front that blew through. They had 5 more lanes to shoot to complete a score.

1st place shooter was Mark Pace with his BSA Scorpion SE in .177 scoring a 89 total.
2nd place shooter was Carlin Mitchell with his custom Air Force in .22 scoring 72 total.

Incomplete score break down was....

The three shooters below completed 8 stations before they had to stop.
Tom Smith with his RAW TM1000 in .177 shot a 66
Mike Manning with his HW77 in .177 shot a 54
Brian Groves with his TX200 in .177 shot a 48

With each shooting 6 stations....
Dave Furr with a Daystate Airwolf in .22 shot a 34
Richard Aucoin with an FX Crown in .25 shot a 45

Congratulations Mark “mobilemail” you won both courses!!!!!!

Contact me to have the two new rifles shipped to you. Pictures of you gloating over your new prizes is required!

IMHO the field target shoot was the funniest thing onsite and highly underutilized. I'm not sure if folks were aware that it was open for competition on Friday. I thought (mistakenly) that it was a Saturday only thing and was fortunate to get it in early.

If Eric does it next year, y'all come early and often!

+1     it's all about the people for me, all the rest of it is very secondary

I don't want to rush getting another year older but I can't wait to head south for next year's GTA Fun Shoot. I'm still sort of disappointed that my younger guy took an extra six months to graduate college,  If he had finished on time the fun shoot would have been a done deal. See you all next year God willing and the water don't rise  ;) ;D

I did mean funnest.  But watching Mitch and Eric talk smack on each other was worth the price of admission by itself!!!!  I can't laugh at Rocker though, he was doing pretty darn good for a man of 193.  ::)

Got home this afternoon and just finished unpacking. Another great Fun Shoot thanks to everyone that that set it up and participated. For me the best part was going back out after 6PM, staying until dark(and longer thanks to Erics lights) and getting in some more trigger time.

From what I saw not many pieces of tubing were undamaged. Almost every one of them was bent. One canopy had a large hole in it. I was told one of the bricks went through it when it tipped over.
Teresa and I were in the Expo Center cleaning up and packing up when it hit.

Lots of poles were bent on all three tents.  One of the cinder blocks bounced off the roof of Tom's Honda Element, busted half the emblem off the rear hatch and left nasty gouges in the pain.  We think a cinder block swung over the top and came through the canopy.

When I went back early Sunday AM to retrieve my bench/bucket, vast majority of legs were crimped or buckled in a manner making repair doubtful. Terrible luck for Hsbgshop, he put a lot of time, effort, and $$ into this.

I'm just glad I listened to that small voice inside me that told me it was time to bug out, or that mess would have been on top of my pickup. I was camped inside my truck right beside Daves trailer just behind the canopy for the previous two nights. Got home safe and sound at just past 11:00 pm on Saturday night. Sorry to see the canopies damaged that way, hope Eric is able to salvage most of it or claim it on his insurance. Am already looking forward to next years shoot, maybe I won't disqualify myself next year by shooting the wrong paintball.

I am happy to be back home but I still wish I was back out there. I relocated about 5 years ago to a place that I just can't seem to enjoy or relax in. It is very refreshing to know that towns like Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas still exist. I would genuinely like to thank Eric and family for inviting us onto their awesome property so we could indulge ourselves in a variety of shooting activities.
I would also like to thank Geoff for generously allowing me to ride with to and from the shoot and for putting me up in such a nice resort. Everybody I met from Horseshoe Bend was amazing. The Mayor came out and shot with us and did quite well, the Fire Dept. made a nice offer to fill tanks, all the staff at the shoot and the resort were wonderful !
Thank you GTA, thank you Graetz family, and thanks to Horseshoe Bend for a wonderful event. I won a few things from the raffle and that felt amazing. I really did win though when I bought a wonderful 76' Sheridan from Lizzie that her eagle eye spotted at a pawn shop on her trip. What an amazing rifle, I will start a thread on it soon. Thank you Lizzie for allowing me to take possession of that gem. Lloyd and Marty shot next to Geoff and I, it was great talking to those guys about guns of all sorts.  Marty has a friendly competitive nature and made the evening shoots a lot more fun.

That was simply amazing and I am glad I didn't miss it.

Mitch

Got the message late that you were in the area.... would have been great if we could have arranged a stop over.    It's bound to happen sooner or later. Two old coots sitting on the front porch in rocking chairs sipping on a cold one and trying to remember the good old days.

Dave, Teresa & All,

Been reading all the comments, replies, pictures from this years reunion, and really saddens us that we couldn't go.  We were definitely planning on it since about a month before - as we "thought" we had prior plans that would have taken us back out west to my home state of Montana, but have had to postpone it for a few months.  A "still small voice" told me as I was about to make reservations out there for the reunion, "Not to go" and to stay home. :(

Am Very Thankful to the Lord that I listened, or else we would have returned home from the shoot to a basement that would have been Completely flooded... and that would have been a disaster. especially for me with full shop setup down there (and my indoor shooting range) as I'm venturing into airgun tuning and have all brand new lathes, milling machines (not miniature, either), roller cabinets full of tools, etc, plus numerous large & small pedestal buffers from my custom metal polishing days which I'm also getting back into and all the associated buffing wheels, compounds, etc... Thousands of dollars worth of stuff would have been ruined. :'(

The magnetic float switch for the sump pump decided to quit just as we were getting into the heaviest rains (re; torrential downpours) which dumped over 5" of water on us, and within the 15 minutes it took me to get my new (not even fired-up yet) Harbor Freight gas powered water pump set up and running for the first time.... we had over 3" covering over 1,500 sq ft of basement floor... was up all night and into the next day getting it all vacuumed up!

Sounds & looks like you all had your share of a storm there as well.... I take it that was on Sat. evening??   Bummer! :(

Congratulations Mark on your trail wins.... of course, you do realize that had I been there the results would have been different, don't you?.... cough, Cough, COUGH!!  ;D ;)

Dave, I have a suggestion for you, consider moving the reunion date (NOT the Location) to sometime between Mid-June and early/mid-Sept... the weather in this country (especially the spring storms) are going to Increase over the next four to five years "at Least", and very possibly "exponentially" beginning around 2021, this was information I came across in a "white paper" at the Institute of Atmospheric & Climate Sciences in Europe a few months ago... they are not painting a very good picture, especially over the next 7 years.

The summer months might give us some time to (hopefully) recoupe from the spring rains/storms and dry out a bit, so we can hopefully get to relax a bit and enjoy the reunion & shoot... just a thought. :)

Great to at least see you once again in the pictures, Liz. ;)

Love & Blessings to all,
Jim & Cindy B.

Hey Mark!.... thanks for your reply!!  Well... your "strategy" definitely worked in my case... but, there's (Lord willing) always next year!!  lol :)   Yes, by all means, let me know the next time you're headed in my direction.. would love to meet up with you and maybe have lunch or dinner together somewhere.. would definitely look forward to that! :)

I'm getting ready to head off to work for a couple of days... need to haul some feed corn down to Springdale, AR.

Take care my friend... and stay in touch, ok?
Jim

I will definitely get in touch with you.. it's been a while.

Take care, talk to you soon.

the wife and i had a great time at the funshoot. At least two blocks went through the top of the canopies one just missed me while i was helping the gentleman in the  knee wheelchair trying to keep things from flying away. Next YR wife is talking about spending that week at crown point so we can fish as well as shoot. David i got the FX Crown in .22 want to get a .30 barrel kit for it now lol. Glad to hear everyone made it home ok. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in doing something like the extreme bench rest next yr at the funshoot. from the looks of the rifles used in the pcp paintball shoot im wondering if we shouldnt push it out to 75 or 100 just kidding my wife would kill me if it was pushed out that far since she has my gaunlet now and she knows it can hit at 50 lol. wife and i both are looking forward to next yrs get together.

Did we as a group, come close to making up for a reasonable portion of his tent losses?  If needed, maybe another fund raiser would be in order.

We could always do it at Dez's place, then he wouldn't have to spend five days packing.   8)

You will sure be popular in the neighborhood!!   ;D ;D ;D

Based on the valuation from Eric to repair/replace, yes - the GTA fundraiser earlier in the year covered the expenses.

The funds raised SHOULD have covered replacement but I've not gotten confirmation from Eric. The price MAY have gone up since he purchased them or he may not have found the deal he did on the original tents. Still awaiting word from him on all that. MANY thanks again to all that helped with the fund raising!!!!

I am pretty sure the tents had no impact on Eric's willingness to re-host. I think the lack of help and support he got may be the reason he's not eager to do it again. JMHO.

I don't doubt that. It's a massive undertaking for one or two people. Even my part is a daunting task and takes all mine and Teresa's efforts. Folks that volunteer to help are a GOD send and appreciated more than you know. So I totally get it if he hesitates to host. We DO need more help with our event to make it more fun and enjoyable for all. I will personally come early and do whatever it takes.

I can imagine that more people want to just show up and have fun then leave. That really takes a lot out of the host. I wasn't able to attend and probably wont again unless it were closer.

Is Hargis open to hosting again ? I would go back to HSB in a heartbeat, I really enjoyed that little town and the people. Eric was incredibly kind to me, we had some good chats. He's a brilliant guy and has a passion for guns like nobody I have met. Being realistic, Kentucky seemed to be a good location for travel, not too far for some of us (wink). Is Galaitin /Glencoe KY still an option for 2020 ? It's 50 miles from my house so please say yes.

Any word on 2020 location?
I am going to be there no matter when and where it takes place!
Just need the info for negotiations with present and possible future employer.

If one puts on an event, one should have insurance for the event.   What if someone had gotten injured on his property ?  I doubt his homeowners insurance would pay.

To far for Dez.
It's near 10 hours from his place to here and he has said it must be within 7 hours drive.
I respect that as I've seen what he hauls.

15-16-17 May 2020
Horseshoe Bend, AR.
Same place, same great hosts.
No, his business insurance would not cover the tents. They are not permanent structures. Insurance companies have their loopholes.
I'm waiting in word from Crown Point for our discount rates again. Will start a Fun Shoot 2020 thread when we have more info.
See you there!!!
Those that can come early to HELP with setup and tear down would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!
