That's the sweetness about these. The wood has so much character and beauty that is almost impossible to turn out bad.

You are a giver Bill. No one can say otherwise. Mines got a lot of character too. You can test run on mine if you'd like. So then you have a base line to go off of. If mine turns out better than yours, granted they both fit each other's action, you can take mine I'll take yours. Cost of doing business. I like doing wood work, but being right across the road from The Bay dry times are crazy here.

Got some sanding done on Rob's. he had a nice sized chunk out of the butt end near the top and I had to do a bit of reshaping. Hardly noticeable now. Little more fine sanding and we'll put some Tru Oil on it. here's a sneak peek.

Both those stocks have some nice grain in them.... If you use a light coloured oil, you will see it better, but nothing like what I got by using a stain first.... Before you put clear oil on it, just wipe it with a damp rag to see what it looks like.... If you like blonde wood without too much contrast, go for it.... otherwise, try a bit of stain inside the barrel recess to decide on a colour BEFORE you oil it.... JMO....

I'm not suggesting a lighter oil.... I am suggesting you consider staining what appears to be a very light coloured wood before applying any oil.... Once you put on oil, it's going to be difficult to darken the wood....
Some guys like an all over dark colour like walnut, I prefer lots of contrast, where the darker (more porous) grain ends up darker than the areas between.... Everyone has a different preference....

What do you think about adding a little stain to the Tru Oil?
Maybe the first coat.

Never done that, don't know how it will work for you.... but once you put on the oil, I'm pretty sure you will have to live with the shade of wood you have at that point....
The Watco Danish Oil I use is available in a few shades.... I use Dark Walnut or Natural, depending on whether I want to lighten or darken the stock after staining.... most often I use the Dark Walnut.... it doesn't change it much, IMO.... On unstained wood, it might....

Ok, yeah, I don't like the light color of this wood. I usually use a little gunstock or special walnut stain. I don't care to get it too red either.

Yeah, "Cabernet" (a red stain) is NOT one of my favourites.... I like Walnut, and "Colonial" (a medium brown), and I have also mixed them together.... If you want lots of contrast but not too dark, try Colonial, and if you want it darker, add some Walnut....

Hahahaha, practice away brother! Somebody had posted about mixing a stain into the oil. Can't think of who. I'm sure he'll come along. Even the side i didn't think had much character is showing some nice potential.

Yeah Bob.. I think I'll run out in the morning and get some Colonial. I'll do a stain coat on Rob's first then the oil and I'll test with mixing on mine.

Has anyone ever used the Watco Danish oil in dark walnut on unfinished wood? I have some of that and have been planning on using it on a H&R shotgun stock I'm sanding now. I think the wood is maple. The Danish oil is really dark out of the can, it's colored with asphaltum. I'm thinking it will really blacken the grain and leave the non-grain wood brown, but I don't know for sure.

It does exactly that, but not to the degree you might think... The stocks in this thread were stained with Colonial, or a mix of Colonial and Walnut.... and then finished with Watco, either Dark Walnut or Natural, depending on if I wanted to darken it or not.... I have not tried the Dark Walnut Watco on unstained wood, I think it might be a bit "muddy" in appearance, but that's just a guess.... The way I apply the Watco, leave it soak in and then wet sanding, leaves a buildup of wood dust/oil paste in the pores of the wood, filling it and making it smoother.... Since the Walnut oil makes that paste turn dark, the pores in the grain darken more than the areas between.... It you use the Natural Watco, that doesn't happen as much.... the pores get filled in with the natural colour of the wood dust / oil mix.... The goal of the wet sanding is to create (progressively finer) grades of wood dust, which mix with the oil, and fill the pores in the grain, yielding a smoother finish....
First 2 coats of Watco I use 220 wet-or-dry, next 2 coats I use 400, next 2 coats I use 600, and the last coat I use 800 grit.... Let the oil soak in at least 20 minutes (1st coat for an hour), keeping the wood
wet
with oil, before wet sanding, and let it dry a bit after sanding (maybe 20 min?) and then wipe off completely, across the grain, with paper towels.... you want to remove the excess oil, but leave the paste in the pores.... As the oil dries, you may find that it oozes out of the wood for a couple of hours, wipe off the excess occasionally during that period, you don't want it to dry on the surface.... If the grain is really open, with a lot of pores, you may need to stay with the 220 grit longer (ie more coats of oil) until all the big pores are filled.... before going to the finer grits....

Well... I ended up going with my Special Walnut and I'm glad I did. I'm going to finish up with Tung Oil.
Here is stain applied only.
Rob.... notice the big azz chunk that used to be missing?
