Title: Slavia 618 piston seal
Post by: tjk on February 18, 2021, 07:37:28 PM
A friend of mine from works brings me this gun and asks if i can service it. Found a finish nail in it. Everything looks ok but Im not sure how to remove the piston seal. There isnt a screw holding it, but a plate with a hole in the center. Dows this entire end plate screw off to remove the old seal!?  The seal does have a few tears in it that are probably the result of the nail. I found replacement seal but wanted to check on this first before i go any further. Thanks for any advise and direction.

Could the seal retaining washer be riveted on, like this one?

Thanks for the pictures. The breech seal appears to be of leather too. I believe the piston is riveted in as your second picture shows. But not sure if this is under the piston rod.

TJK,

The seal is definitely riveted on; I had a 622 with the identical seal.  What I did was to cut away the old seal (no going back); this allowed me to push the washer toward the piston head.  I then used a punch and hammer to roll the expanded end of the rivet back down and remove the washer.  I supported the free end of the rivet at the same time.  Kind of a pain, but that was all I could think of.  Then replaced the parts and re-expanded the end of the rivet.  Good luck!

The nail part makes me cringe. Sounds like someone tried to "shoot" steel nails from the rifle and one slipped back into the compression tube. The compression tube (scratched?) and seal damage are one thing. I'd prefer to NOT know what steel nails did to the bore rifling :(

I don't have one of these rifles so this suggestion may not work. If it was my project I'd drill out the rivet and tap threads into the piston head so I could use a screw & washer replacement seal. Would also use some good quality thread locker to make sure the new screw didn't come loose during use.

Edit...

This style piston has a center rod so drilling/tapping not an option. Is it possible the rod unscrews from the piston to release the front washer and piston seal?
