I generally wait for colder weather to take squirrels, etc. because as a kid I was always told not to eat "rabbits" before the first frost. As I recall it had something to do with sick rabbits would die after the cold came.
We have a squirrel season which opens upstate NY in September, but I don't go until it gets cold.
How do you feel about eating game taken in spring, summer, or early fall ? I have asked different hunters about this, and gotten different answers, but since this site has hunters from so many different climates I figured that you would be the most informed about this.

temperature has nothing to do with the meat(when alive that is, you need to cool it quickly no matter the season). season dates are set to allow for breeding/nesting/young rearing seasons and to limit harvests, as for the rabbits and the cold, most that have tuleremia die when it gets cold, but you can tell from their liver if they have it (spots)you will find botfly larvae in game in the warm months "wolves " as some call them, but they are just under the skin. properly handled and prepared meat is edible at any time. heat from proper cooking kills parasites and bacteria. they dont just run elimination houses during cold months!

I was also told about the sick rabbits that would die when it got cold. The primary reason that I like to hunt cooler/colder weather game is due to the botfly larvae that is often present in our small game. They land on the animal, lay their eggs and then the larvae burrows into the skin causing a sore in which the small insect grows. This is very unsightly and can turn your stomach when cleaning the animal. Many hunters throw the whole carcase away but you can easily cut the infected part out and consume the rest of the meat.
Its a personal call, but in my case, it has not stopped me from taking squirrels and rabbits during warmer weather when conditions including game laws allow me to do so.
