Anyone with a laser/mil that can do fine front inserts?
(1/1)
JimmyD.:
I know if I want my irons perfectly aligned I’ll need to send my guns.
Or buy any Lefty/ambidextrous classic SSP, FWB300S, HW, R series with sights. Any older RWS TO1 all metal part guns from the guy doing the front sights like I want them.
I’m not sure I should mix these two topics but they’re relatively related.
Let me say I’ve owned a whole lot (over 25) of John in PA, JIPA, John Thomas tuned spring guns.
I currently have 7 left. Well, 8 if you count the one favorite low power tight bore .177 carbine El Gamo 300 I’d had tuned, chopped at 11” & crowned. Gave to my 16 year old boy after showing him a no choke low power spring gun can definitely stack JSB 8.44’s at 37 yards.
Now I have owned quite a few guns from sellers who self tuned and I have no doubt upon shooting them that they did.
What I haven’t tried is other “Professionally” tuned spring guns. I want to try a 12 ftlb .177 RWS 54 done by Hector Medina. I just missed the RWS 34P tuned by Motorhead. No David Slade. No Paul Watts Sunnen honed short stroked TX200, legendary UK tuners or Ken Reeves.
I did sell a Michael McKeown tuned and stocked R1 .22. Big mistake.
So, who’s tunes are best, and why are they best?
Here’s my thoughts on all guns. The basic open sights aren’t good enough. I’d like a HW77 or K variant. IF it had a hooded globe insert instead of a thick RWS style I would have to file a sharp V notch into the middle of it for anything past 10 yards.
First I didn’t like the diopter sights I have tried. Not sure if buying a $400-$800 Gehman, Anschutz diopter set would help. I doubt it, and here’s why. They all use the same front sight inserts. I always take the front thin rectangular ones and very carefully with Jewelers files, file them to a thin to pointy inverted V.
So anyone reading this know of anyone that can tune, laser cut the inserts & align the refined inserts to perfection? I’ve done very well with factory rear HW style but moving on up to a longer sight radius with Williams micro click sets for 4 I prefer to shoot without a scope while I still can.
Insanity:
The most common desk top laser engravers that I know of are still only really etching just the surface. Maybe someone in the machining gate can make a nice piece for you. I'm not very familiar with the inserts but I think for what you want a 3d printed one would still force you to hand file to suit.
JimmyD.:
Well I’ve used Swiss Jeweler files. My front inverted V inserts allows my R1 .22 w/ 5.54 FTT’s to keep them under 1” at the 40 yards I tested.
If I had known John Bowman can cut or engrave anything I would have sent to him.
He’ll convert the remaining posts I have to perfectly symmetrical inverted V’s.
Mine are literally pointy sharp. On a from bag it’s fun though to pull these shots off.
